SERVICE THEME:At Rest in Christ – But Not at Ease

WELCOME — We are so pleased that you have joined us for worship today! If you are a guest with us, please sign our guest register, which is located in the center entryway of the church. We welcome and encourage children to join our worship services! Enclosed “cry rooms” are available in the back of the church near the restrooms, if your child becomes restless. Pictorial children’s Bibles are available for children to use, on the table in the back of church. Please let us know if there is any other way we can be of service to you. Again, welcome! OUR MISSION — The mission of St. Andrew Lutheran Church is to guide people to know Jesus as their Savior, to grow in their faith, and to show Jesus to others. OUR BELIEF — We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the only source of all Christian doctrine and teaching. We believe that the only true God is the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that we are saved not by anything we do, but only through faith in Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our sins. We will be happy to tell you more about what we believe! OUR HISTORY — St. Andrew Lutheran Church was established in 1888 and is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a confessional Lutheran church body with over 1,200 congregations in North America and with more than 30 sister church bodies worldwide.

Real wealth is found in heavenly treasure. Earthly riches are not a reward for doing good, but rather an opportunity to do good.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S SERVICE

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUESTS – At this time, anyone may share special prayer requests with the pastor, which he will then pray about later in the worship service, during the Prayer of the Church.  If you prefer to submit a written prayer request, you may do so before the service or hand it to an usher during the offering.  As a family of believers, we want to know each other’s joys and struggles, so that we can pray for each other.

OPENING HYMN – 239 – Glory Be to God the Father

INVOCATION

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray.Mercifully grant, O God, that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts, for without your help we are unable to please you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON – Amos 6:1-7 (EHV)

Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you distinguished people of the leading nation,to whom the house of Israel comes.2Travel to Kalneh and look.Go from there to Hamath Rabbah, and go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than those kingdoms? Are their territories greater than your territory?3You who are trying to put off the evil day,you bring near the session for violence!4Those who lie on ivory beds, sprawling upon their couches, eating lambs from the flockand calves straight from the stall,5improvising tunes on the lyre, composing music for themselves on musical instruments like David,6drinking large bowls of wine—they slather themselves with the most expensive perfumed oils, but they do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.7That is why they will go into exile as the first of the exiles. Those who sprawl out at their feasts for the dead will depart.

PSALM OF THE DAY – Psalm 146 – CW p. 120

SECOND LESSON – Revelation 2:8-11 (EHV)

8To the messenger of the church in Smyrna write: The First and the Last, who was dead and came to life again, says

this: 9I know your suffering and your poverty—but you are rich. And I

know the blasphemy that comes from those who say they are Jews but are not; rather, they are a synagogue of Satan. 10Do not fear anything that you are about to suffer. Look, the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you will be tested, and you will suffer for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

11Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M: Alleluia. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Alleluia. (Philippians 2:10-11, NIV)

GOSPEL – Luke 16:19-31 (EHV)

After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. 20A beggar named Lazarus had been laid at his gate. Lazarus was covered with sores and 21longed to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Besides this, the dogs also came and licked his sores. 22Eventually the beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell, where he was in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus at his side. 24He called out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in misery in this flame.’

8

Page 9: SERVICE THEME:standrewchicago.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/service...  · Web view2019-10-20 · 19th Sunday after Pentecost. October 20, 2019. SERVICE THEME: At Rest in Christ

25“But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, and you are in misery. 26Besides all this, a great chasm has been set in place between us and you, so that those who want to cross from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27“He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s home, 28because I have five brothers—to warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29“Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. Let them listen to them.’

30“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31“Abraham replied to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

After the reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father

and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? If so, answer: I do.

R: I do.

M: Do you believe that the teaching of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, as you have learned to know it from Luther’s Small Catechism, is faithful and true to the Word of God? If so, answer: I do.

PRAYER

M: Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, author and perfecter of our faith, in mercy you joined these brothers and sister in Christ to your Church when they were born again of water and the Spirit in Baptism. In mercy you taught them your saving truth. Grant that they may offer themselves as living sacrifices to you as their spiritual act of worship. Transform them by the renewing of their minds so that they will not conform to the pattern of this world. Help us live in love and harmony with one another and work together in serving you. Keep us united in your Spirit, and bring us at last to your eternal kingdom, where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

M: Go in peace.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH – for the Mission of the Church – CW p. 129 – including the following special prayer:

for our sister churches in Nepal:

12

Page 13: SERVICE THEME:standrewchicago.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/service...  · Web view2019-10-20 · 19th Sunday after Pentecost. October 20, 2019. SERVICE THEME: At Rest in Christ

Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise you for allowing us to share the gospel of Jesus with over 5,000 people in Nepal. Please bless their Bible institute and the 125 leaders receiving instruction. Bless their seminary and the 12 circuit leaders as they meditate on your Word. Please protect the Christians in Nepal from imprisonment, harassment, and beatings. Do not allow anti-Christian attitudes and beliefs to hinder your gospel from spreading throughout the country. Send your Holy Spirit upon the leaders and people of these churches so that they will stand strong and grow in their knowledge of your Word as they share your truth with the lost. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

WELCOME, GUESTS! – We are happy to have you with us today! Please sign the guest register in the church entryway so that we have a record of your visit. Our pastor, Adam Gawel, would be happy to meet with you if you would like. Please join us for worship or Bible study again!

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND ADULT BIBLE STUDY TOPICS TODAYIn today’s Sunday school lesson from the series I Spy Salvation’s Story, students examine “The Case of the Missing Scroll: King Josiah.” God blesses all who hear and honor His Word. Parents could discuss with their children: “Where do we hear God’s Word? How does God’s Word strengthen you?” In adult Bible study, we continue a series entitled Sing to the Lord: A Study of Lutheran Hymnody. This Bible study covers many of the great hymns that express the truths of Scripture with beautiful lyrics set to timeless melodies, which make great tools for Christians to confess their faith and sing praises to God. Adults meet for Bible study in the back of the church sanctuary, and children meet for Sunday school in the ministry center next door to church. All are welcome!

WELCOME HOME SUNDAY – October 27 – worship and luncheonIf you read through Scripture and count the times it refers to

believers as “brothers and sisters,” you will reach triple digits quickly. The Holy Spirit is deliberate with his choice of words. If he frequently refers to the Church in those terms, there can be only one explanation: He wants us to think of each other as family. We understand the important roles a mother and father play. We know the joys (and challenges) of having siblings. Do we grasp that it is just as important that we have a spiritual family? Scripture teaches that what unites us to our spiritual family is infinitely more powerful than any biological bond. Moreover, you can lose a blood relative; they can be taken away from you by death. But you will enjoy the companionship of your spiritual family for all eternity.

On October 27th, we will be holding Welcome Home Sunday. Welcome Home Sunday is a celebration of this reality. On that day, we praise God for giving us a spiritual family… a spiritual home. Our goal for that Sunday is to make it into something of a spiritual family reunion. We want to have 100% of our members in attendance. Why? Because God has told us we are family. And when God speaks, reality results!

Please set aside October 27 and join your brothers and sisters in Christ at 9:30 for worship, and plan stay after worship for a luncheon and fellowship, starting around 11:00. Please also go to our church Facebook page, click “Going” on the “Welcome Home Sunday” Event ad, consider sharing the Event ad to your own Facebook page, and consider sending invitations from within the Event ad (under the Share button) to friends you would like to encourage to attend – whether they are current members of St. Andrew or not. And of course, face-to-face invitations, phone calls, text messages, etc., to invite and encourage are also excellent! All are welcome!

MEMBERSHIP CHANGESWe welcome Mark Schleif and Jason Cheng and his wife Mei-shu Wu into communicant membership of St. Andrew Lutheran Church! Mark was formerly a member of a sister church of the WELS in Wisconsin. Jason and Mei-shu are members of our sister church in Taichung, Taiwan, but we are also receiving them as members here at St. Andrew, in recognition of the fact that they have made St. Andrew their church-home for these several years while they are in Chicago for work. Please introduce yourself to them if you haven’t already made their acquaintance and welcome them to our fellowship! … Also, Ursula
