Last All praise to God the Father! All praise to Christ the Son! All praise to God the spirit, who binds the church as one!

With saints who went before us, with saints who witness still, we sing glad alleluias and strive to do your will.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son, you made known your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen FIRST READING: Isaiah 61:10-11 Reader: A reading from Isaiah 10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its shoots,

and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Reader: The Word of the Lord C Thanks be to God PSALM: Psalm 34:1-9 (Assisting minister reads light print; congregation reads bold.) 1I will bless the LORD at all times; the praise of God shall ever be in my mouth. 2I will glory in the LORD; let the lowly hear and rejoice. 3Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; let us exalt God's name together. 4I sought the LORD, who answered me and delivered me from all my terrors. 5Look upon the LORD and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed. 6I called in my affliction, and the LORD heard me and saved me from all my troubles. 7The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear the LORD, and delivers them. 8Taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are they who take refuge in God! 9Fear the LORD, you saints of the LORD, for those who fear the LORD lack nothing. SECOND READING: Galatians 4:4-7 Reader: A reading from Galatians 4When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Reader: The Word of the Lord C Thanks be to God

THE GOSPEL HYMN Celtic Alleluia ELW 174

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the first chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord GOSPEL: Luke 1:30-33, 39-55 30The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ 39In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greet-ing, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. 45And blessed is she who be-lieved that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’ 46And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51He has shown strength with his arm;

Page 6: Service of WorshipService of Worship

he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.’

“Hail, Mary, full of grace,” said the angel. And she was given a mission, a child, and a vision of that child’s mission. She sang of that mission that involves us all in a song often called

by its Latin name, the Magnificat, or in English “magnify” or “proclaim greatness.” We will join her in singing it, “my soul proclaims your greatness, O Lord, and my spirit rejoices in you.
