28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 9, 2016, at 10:45 a.m.

Welcome! If you are worshipping with us for the first time, we hope that you will find God’s

presence among us. Your presence with us enriches our vision of the Body of Christ, and we give thanks that you have joined us today. We hope you will sign the register pad when it is passed. Immediately following worship, refreshments are served at Fellowship Hour in Pioneer and Blachly Halls. Just exit the doors to the left of the pulpit and follow the crowd. Enjoy a cup of fair trade coffee. We look forward to greeting you there. If you have questions, please ask.

If you have special needs, please let one of the ushers know. Hearing assist devices,

wheelchairs, and walkers are available. The elevator provides access to all three floors of the building. Restrooms are located on each floor. Our lower level has wheelchair accessible, all gender restrooms. A diaper changing table is in the Nursery upstairs.

Children are welcome in worship (and we know they may need to wiggle!). If you'd prefer, we

do offer activities upstairs. Children ages 3 and under are welcome in the Nursery at any time. After the Word for Children, children 3 and up are invited to join us in the theater for Kids Worship - a worship service that mirrors our service in the Sanctuary. Please check out our website for information about Sunday School for children and adults at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays during the school year.

Gathering Music Tower Chimes

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude Mary Ellen Sutton “Lento, Opus 105, Set 2” Stanford

Called in God's Presence One: In deep gratitude we come to worship God. Many: We recognize God as the source of all goodness. One: All good gifts come from the Spirit of God: Many: love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness are all of God. One: We come with grateful hearts, not for things, but for who God is. Many: We gather to show our gratitude in song and prayer.

Unison Prayer of Confession (inspired by Luke 17:11-19) O God, so often we take you for granted. We take for granted that you will answer our prayers, that you will heal us and make us whole. We take for granted that you love us. Forgive us for not appreciating your grace and presence in our lives. Help us to be more thankful. Give us faith to see you in everything and everyone around us, so that we may be truly grateful. (Silence is kept for individual reflection and confession) One: ...through Jesus Christ, our Ruler and Savior. Many: Amen.

Words of Assurance

One: God challenges us, and God encourages us. God confronts us, and God accepts us.

Many: God works wonders in our midst and gives us the eyes, the hearts, the souls to see such miracles.

One: God forgives us. God guides us through the wilderness ways. God leads us home.

Many: Our hearts are freed for thanksgiving and praise. We stand amazed at what God has done and continues to do. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Exchanging the Peace

PRAYER OF JESUS (said in unison)

“Our Father” is the traditional way this prayer begins. For many, however, the

traditional language is a hindrance to the intimacy of their relationship with God.

You are invited to use whatever name for God you find most meaningful (Mother,

Father, Creator, God, Friend, etc,). Together, our names for God will create a

beautiful chorus reaching out to the Holy.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Welcoming Dinner -On Saturday, Oct. 29th we will gather together

people who are new and new-ish to the church for a Welcoming Dinner. This is a lovely evening of breaking bread and getting to know each other. Those who attend will be given an opportunity to ask questions about First Congregational and meet some of our long-time members. The event is hosted by our Board of Deacons. If you are new to the church and want an invitation to the dinner, please e-mail Pastor Caela ([email protected]). If you are interested in helping cook, serve, or clean, please contact Linda Thurston.

Upcoming Adult Sunday School

October 16 - November 6 at 9:30 a.m. Gayle Doll will lead a study of Mary Pipher's bestselling book Another Country: Navigating the Emotional Terrain of our Elders. This book by Mary Pipher (author of Reviving Ophelia) explores the way we connect with our elders. It is especially helpful in developing a conscious plan about how to manage relationships with our loved ones become more dependent, but also helps those of us who are aging to be aware of our role in relationships with those who are younger than we are. Pipher recommends learning "interdependence", claiming that the American way has been to promote independence to a fault. There are good lessons here for all of us. Gayle requests that participants read at least the introduction to the book before class begins on Oct. 16th. If you would like the church office to order a copy of the book for you, please let us know by Oct. 10th.

$hop $mart Grocery Certificates - It’s the easy way to make

a donation to the Church. Purchase your HyVee gift card after worship to use when you buy groceries. Buy them at face value, spend them like cash, and the church receives a donation.

2016 Children's Christmas Pageant - I'm very excited to spend time

this Advent season preparing for the Christmas Pageant, when we will enjoy the gift of hearing the Good News from our youngest friends, who I've already seen are wise and compassionate storytellers! Starting November 6th, we will be practicing during the Sunday School hour (9:30-10:30), while making time for a shorter Sunday School lesson too. Please be in touch if you have any questions or thoughts to share. -Andria Anderson, 719-369-5751, [email protected]

Visit from the Asian Rural Institute - Monday, Oct. 10th at

7pm in our theater (upstairs) - Come learn more about ARI, sustainable

agriculture, community building, and servant leadership from JB Hoover, Executive Director of American Friends of ARI and Rene Guilingen. ARI training focuses on sustainable agriculture through integrated organic farming techniques, community building, and servant leadership. It is community based and hands-on learning is emphasized in all areas. ARI's mission is to build an environmentally healthy, just and peaceful world in which each person can live to his or her fullest potential. ARI provides training for grassroots leaders in leadership, sustainable agriculture practices, and community development. Each year ARI invites 25 to 30 rural leaders of all ages, both men and women, from developing countries to its campus in northern Japan for a nine-month training program. Over the past 40 years, ARI has trained over 1300 rural leaders. If you are unable to make it on Monday night, a similar presentation will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7pm in the Meadowlark Hills Community Room. If you have questions about ARI or this event, please see Bill Pallett.

Spinet Piano Seeks New Home- I've lived in Kansas all my life (65+

years) and need a new home, preferably in this community where I like the climate. I look pretty nice and retain tune well - although whenever I am moved, my new family should have me tuned. My price is $100 and my new family must move me. (Moving cost in town to a location on ground level should be around $150.). Please call Judy Willlingham to come visit me and play my keys. I hope someone from my church family is interested!!
