THE POSITION

Service Line Director, Cancer Center

The Service Line Director will work diligently to accomplish multiple simultaneous projects, develop incremental cancer services and lead the combined resources of VVMC and FMC in the provision of cancer care to residents of Northern and Central Arizona. They will work collaboratively with NAH senior leaders, directors and managers in a matrix format, using a combination of direct authority and delegated authority to accomplish the specific objectives of the position.

The Service Line Director will direct and coordinate all administrative and strategic functions of the Cancer Center of Northern Arizona (CCNA). He/She will facilitate and develop cutting-edge cancer care, integrating oncology care in a nurturing, collaborative and supportive environment, and is the leader and the advocate for cancer care in the region. By maintaining a multi-disciplinary cancer care focus, coordinates NAH components and develops incremental, new programs and services. Serves as the primary resource for cancer issues throughout NAH.

The Service Line Director Will:

Direct and manage all cancer service departments across NAH with budgetary responsibility in excess of $3.5M per year with Human Resource responsibility in excess of 25 FTEs with significant growth expected in 1-3 years and may include indirect responsibility for certain imaging services and infusion centers.

Work in a dyad relationship with the Medical Director, serves as a primary operational liaison and point of coordination between NAH components, hospital departments, NAH Foundation, external government agencies and community constituencies on a wide range of clinical, programmatic, and/or administrative issues.

Formalize and maintain an integrated service line approach for delivery of cancer care throughout NAH and its service areas including developing and implementing the Cancer Service Line strategy to become a Center of Excellence across the region and serving as the primary advocate to regional, state and federal agencies.

Effectively implement change and create a culture of continuous improvement while developing a multi-disciplinary team focus to drive cancer services and to address cancer care at every step from prevention, screening, diagnosis, active treatment and survivorship and provide a robust management structure between physicians and management with exceptional results.

Partner with Philanthropy to create "case statements" for donor groups that facilitate routine, annual giving and further enhance NAH's ability to engage in a capital campaign for cancer. In conjunction with Philanthropy, addresses donors and donor groups in person and through written communication.

Develop and submit initiatives for the service line to include: a) Growth strategies b) Quality outcomes and customer service c) Service development, acquisition or partnership to achieve stated objectives, d) Physician leadership, physician integration, and physician recruitment, e) Consistency of services across all locations providing oncology services, f) Investigate, develop or partner - to expand services in cancer service delivery, cancer education (community and CME), and cancer research (clinical trials), g) In conjunction with Philanthropy, develop initiatives for annual and capital campaigns.

Successful candidates will possess the following areas:

Solid understanding & knowledge of overall oncology services/ambulatory models, business processes and clinical operations, as well as relevant financial acumen

Demonstrated ability to develop, lead and support staff to include mentoring, leadership development and alignment with program and hospital roles across the clinical care continuum

Demonstrated successful engagement, partnering and alliance building with a broad range of constituencies

Proficiency in cultivating excellent physician & staff relations

Demonstrated emotional intelligence in order to respond to crisis, unpredictable situations with staff, patients & family, in a high stress/demand work environment.

Excellent communication skills in order to work with ill and disabled customers of all ages, bilingual customers, emotionally distressed customers and families, and with hospital personnel within the hospital

Excellent analytic ability to identify and evaluate problems and recommend solutions

Skill in the formulation, negotiation, and establishment of complex, integrated contractual arrangements

Knowledge of strategic communications and marketing concepts, principles, methodology and techniques

The incumbent needs to be a credible leader within the oncology service line with strong relationship building and communication skills. Must possess understanding of the clinical and operational processes required to care for patients in a complex medical practice and integrated health system setting. The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Health Care, Business Administration, or related field. Master’s degree, clinical background, and certification/fellowship in a nationally recognized healthcare association is preferred. Minimum of five years’ leadership experience within the oncology service line.
