6. Maintenance

6.1 Stuffing boxThe stuffing box gland must not be too tight during start-up in order to let sufficient liquid lubricate the shaft and the stuffing particularly while running it in. Once the stuffing box housing and the stuffing box gland have reached approximately the same temper-ature as that of the pump parts, the running-in of the stuffing box gland has been completed. If the stuffing box leaks too much, retighten slightly while the pump is running. To ensure continuous lubrication, a few drops should always drop from the stuffing box to pro-tect the stuffing or shaft sleeve against damage.If the stuffing box leaks too much and it cannot be further tightened, the stuffing box must be repacked. After removal, clean and check the shaft sleeve, chamber and stuffing box gland.

6.1.1 Assembly of stuffing box

After repacking, check that the stuffing box has not been overtightened by turning the pump shaft. Run in as described above.

Before starting work on the pump, make sure that the electricity supply has been switched off and that it cannot be accidentally switched on.

6.2 Mechanical shaft sealsMechanical shaft seals are maintenance-free, work-ing almost without any leakages. If any considerable and increasing seepage occurs, the mechanical shaft seal should be checked immediately. If the seal faces are damaged, the entire shaft seal should be re-placed. Mechanical shaft seals should be treated with the greatest care.

6.3.2 Motor bearingsMotors up to and including 7.5 kW are provided with maintenance-free, greased-for-life bearings.Motors of 11.0 kW and up should be greased in accordance with the indications on the motor name-plate.

6.3.3 Ball bearing greaseLithium-based grease according to the following specifications must be used: • NLGI class 2 or 3.• Viscosity of basic oil: 70 to 150 cSt at +40°C. • Temperature range: –30°C to +140°C during con-

tinuous operation.

7. Alignment

7.1 GeneralAlignmentIn a complete pump unit assembled and supplied from factory, the coupling halves have been accu-rately aligned. Alignment is made by inserting shims under the pump and motor mounting surfac-es as required.The pump/motor alignment may be affected during transport. Always check alignment after the pump has been installed.If misalignment has occurred due to radial or angu-lar shifting, realign by fitting/removing shims under the feet of the pump or the motor.Take care to align carefully as this will increase the working lives of the coupling, bearings and me-chanical shaft seals considerably.Note: Check the final alignment when the pump has obtained its operating temperature under nor-mal operating conditions.
