From Down East...An amateur sportsman spent the day withdog and gun, but brought home no game. Afriend twitted him with his failure:

”Didn’t you shoot anything at all?”

The honest fellow nodded miserably, “I shotmy dog.”

His questioner asked “Was he mad?”

The sportsman shook his head doubtfully.

“Not exactly mad,” he asserted; “but not sodarned happy neither!”

Today, the Salvation Army exists in 119countries, including Haiti, where two of theirthree buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyedby earthquake. The Army’s red kettles, used to collectmoney during the holiday season, is a traditionthat started when a soup kitchen chef put out akitchen kettle to collect donations to pay for thefree meals provided.

Robin introduced Barbara Sydney, aNewton resident and volunteer who found herselfunemployed last year, in search of a worthy useof her time. She contacted the Salvation Armyand ended up organizing most of the kettlecollection activities in Newton, ringing a bellherself at the Newtonville Star Market.

Barbara reminded us that standing by thekettles and ringing bells, their most visible
