SERVICE ASSIGNMENTS
WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?
Ever been in the middle of something and wonder how you got there? I would imagine that Saul had that exact same thought the second day he was fasting at Judas' house on Straight Street in Damascus. I came here to persecute Christians and their dead leader blinded me; now I am sitting here in a stranger's house waiting for one of those Christians to tell me what to do. How did it come to this? What am I doing and what am I sup-
posed to do? Saul had some questions I assure you.
Consider what he was doing for just a minute. He was fasting. Fast-ing was to give time to prayer. The time you would devote to eating you would devote to prayer instead. So when Judas called his family to the ta-ble, Paul went aside to pray. Someone may say that prayer is all that is required for salvation. If that is so, what was the need for Ananias to
come? He was an extra if Saul's prayers were enough. But the plan from the beginning was for Ananias to come and tell Saul what he must do.
And what did he tell Saul? Obviously we do not have all the conver-sation but we know that when Saul regained his vision he went first of all to be baptized. After going without food for three days his first priority was to be immersed. What did Ananias tell him he must do? Pray? If so,
Saul would say, "I got it covered man. Three straight days of nothing but prayer, I’m OK there." But when the scales fell, Saul was baptized imme-diately. What did he tell him? It must have involved a discussion about remission of sins in baptism so that he might receive eternal life.
Saul realized it was not through his own righteousness that he would be saved but through the righteousness of Jesus Christ through
obedience in baptism. Have you been baptized or are you still blind?
