A Vertebrae Bend Restrictor (VBR) usually comprises a number of interlocking
elements which articulate when subject to an external load and lock together to form
a smooth curved “locking” radius. This radius is chosen to be equal to or greater than
the minimum bend radius of the pipe that it is applied to. Once the elements have
locked together the bending moment present is transferred into the elements and
back through a specially designed steel interface structure into the adjacent rigid
connection, therefore protecting the pipe / cable from potentially damaging loads.
Flexible pipes, flowlines, power cables and umbilical’s are usually connected to a rigid
structure such as a subsea riser base, PLEM or wellhead. To prevent these pipes from
over bending at the interface between flexible and rigid structures, Vertebrae Bending
Restrictors are often installed on the pipe. The VBR is specifically used where static or
quasi-static loads act on a pipe, rather than dynamic loads when a bending stiffener
would be more suited. We are able to offer either a bespoke design or make use of a
vast array of existing designs of bend restrictor elements to suit a wide range of pipes,
umbilical’s and cables. We are also able to design and manufacture the steel interface
structure required. For a comprehensive tooling asset list please request.
Vertebrae Bend Restrictors & SUBFLEX™ Cable Protection Systems
Contract : P-247 Parker Scanrope Statoil Kvitebjørn & Valemon Platforms
Date : June 2013Product : Vertebrae Bend Restrictors
Subsea Energy Solution manufacture SUBDUCT™ Cable Protection Systems for use
in harsh subsea environments. Protection sleeves offers excellent abrasion and impact
resistance as well as environmental protection to umbilical’s in locations comprising
rocky seabed’s, pipeline and cable crossings. The cable protection system is a
polyurethane split arrangement. Each section overlaps the next and is held in place
by a field proven strapping system (various options available). Within the overlapped
section are interlocking profiles that provide axial stiffness holding each element
together. This provides continuous protection over the full length of the assembly.
In addition, each module incorporates a radial keyed arrangement, which increases
the rigidity of the system against compression. The straps that are installed on the
installation vessel require a tensioning tool that is supplied by Subsea Energy Solutions.
Each strap can be fitted in under 5 seconds. The protection sleeves are manufactured
from polyurethane to provide a robust, wear resistant assembly. As standard, cable
protection sleeves are supplied with a span length of approx. 1,000 mm to ensure that
the sleeves are easily handled offshore, however bespoke lengths are produced to suit
specific project requirements. For a comprehensive tooling asset list please request.
SUBDUCT™ Cable Protection Systems
Contract : P-880 Scot Renewables SR2000 OrkneyDate : June 2013Product : SUBDUCT™ Cable Protection
Systems / Vertebrae Bend Restrictors / Static & Dynamic Bend Stiffeners
Subsea Energy Solutions manufacture a wide range of bespoke high performance
dynamic bend stiffeners for use with umbilical’s and flexibles to limit bending stress to
an acceptable level. All bend stiffeners are subjected to a formal design process using
Orca-Bend to confirm that the profile is suitable for the clients dynamic application.
Interface adaptors are designed to suits the clients application whether a bolted flange
or split clamp arrangement in materials including steel, stainless steel and titanium. All
interface adaptors are subjected to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and are designed to
ensure that the joint between the metallic adaptor and elastomer body is a mechanical
construction that does not rely on a bonded solution that could be subject to potential
failure. Cable diameters 50 mm to 250 mm, stiffener lengths 300 mm to 3,000 mm,
interface adaptors a bespoke design. Features fully detailed design report, steel,
stainless steel and titanium interface adaptors. As with all Subsea Energy Solutions
products a full qualification test program is performed. Each design of bend stiffener
is subjected to a dynamic function test using our in-house test rig for determining
tension v angle plots (TAP). For a comprehensive tooling asset list please request.

Used to seal the interface between the umbilical / flexible riser and the inside of a
J-Tube, incorporating a water tight seal in which an anti corrosion inhibitor is often
introduced, our J-tube seals offer both diverless and diver installed solutions.
Manufactured from high marine grade Subthane™ Polyurethane and of split shell,
modular construction, our J-tube seal solutions allow ease of installation. Typically the
seal will be combined with a centraliser arrangement, designed to accurately position
the cable within the J-tube during the pull-in process. For a comprehensive tooling
asset list please request.

Subsea Energy Solutions have extensive knowledge in all aspects of polyurethane and buoyancy processing.
All manufacturing processes are performed in-house to strict quality control.
Polyurethane Engineering
Subsea Energy Solutions and it’s partners own and
rent solutions for managing hoses and downlines from
a vessel in the event of an emergency scenario or a
requirement to move off station quickly. Applications
and projects involve subsea and topside pumping
projects where a hose or downline is deployed from
a vessel. In the event of loss of DP / black ship the
connector will disconnect under a pre-determined
load and part self sealing the bore preventing a spill
and breakaway of any equipment.
Ranging between 2” and 4” these connectors provide
a range of breakaway capability up to 10,000 psi.
We have connectors that will both seal and vent
on disconnect and solutions to both high and low
pressure scenarios. To support the EQD deployment,
we provide a subsea interface and clump weight.
Subsea Energy Solutions offer a 2” and 4” package.
Each skid manifold includes an EQD solution, double
barriers, connection interface, monitoring equipment
and flexibility to run a variety of flows and pressures.
