story of never giving up. Stewart resides inWalpole, Mass. with his wife Lori and their twosons McCauley and Maxwell.

Paul Stewart comes from a hockey family aswell. Most notable, Bill Stewart (September 20,1984-February 14, 1964) was an American coachand sports official who was a hockey referee andcoach, and also an umpire in baseball’s MajorLeagues. In his first season as head coach of theChicago Black Hawks, he led the team to aStanley Cup in 1938.

Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he wasthe first American-trained head coach to win theStanley Cup. He was also an umpire in theNational League from 1933 to 1954, and offici-ated in four World Series (1937, 1943, 1948,1953) and four All-Star Games (1936, 1940,1948, 1954), calling balls and strikes for the lastcontest.

Bill Stewart was the home plate umpire forJohnny Vander Meer’s second consecutive no-hitter in 1938 and was the crew chief for the1951 three-game pennant playoff between theNew York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Guest Speaker:Paul Stewart

One of the most successful and respectedindividuals in hockey, Paul Stewart has done itall. Player, Referee, and now Coach as he is theECAC Director of Officiating. Paul Stewart maybe the only person to ever make it on the Ice inthe NHL twice.

Growing up in Boston, Stewart attended theprestigious Groton School where he played ofVarsity Hockey and was appointed to the posi-tion of Assistant Captain. He continued hiseducation at the University of Pennsylvaniawhere he was a defensemen from 1972-75.

Stewart was an enforcer in various leaguesincluding the WHA, AHL, CHL, NAHL, andECHL from 1975-83. He played in his first NHLgame on November 22, 1979 with the QuebecNordiques against the Boston Bruins.

Upon completion of his playing days,Stewart made the determination that his days onthe ice were not done. Stewart joined the NHLTrainee Program in 1983. Officiating his firstNHL game on March 27, 1986, this was the startof a 13 year career that allowed Stewart tobecome the only American born referee toofficiate 1,000 games in the NHL on March 15,2003. He worked his final NHL game on April 3,2003 in Boston.

Stewart has not had an easy road, In Febru-ary 1998 he was diagnosed with Stage 3 coloncancer only a few days after the birth of his firstchild, McCauley. True to his character he wasdetermined to fight the disease and make it backto the NHL. He accomplished this only 9 monthslater he was back on the ice.

Stewart has received multiple honorsincluding the NASO Gold Whistle Award in2001.
