Dear Brothers and Sisters,

During our daily Mass on Friday, January 19, we heard a section from Mark’s Gospel (Mark 3:13-19), the call of the apostles. There is a marvelous reflec-tion/meditation that I want to share with you. It came from the book Jesus, the Gift of Love by Jean Vanier. Jean Vanier is the founder of L’Arche, an inter-national network of communities for people with intellectual disabilities.

Where We Learn

Jesus had called them together To form community with him and around him and with many others — disciples, men and women, a bonding deeper than family ties. Community where they learned to care for each other, where each one had his or her place and gift to exercise, where they learned also about their brokenness, jealousy, their desire for power, and their need for forgiveness and healing, their need to forgive; where they learned continually to be open to the poor, the lame, the broken and the blind. Not a closed community for security, but a community for healing and for helping each one to grow in freedom and in love: a community of mutual support which announced the good news by its existence and from which some could go out to announce the good news of God’s love. Jesus loved these men and women who had left all to be with him . . . Those who follow Jesus and give up all for him will receive all from Jesus.

This weekend, we begin the celebration of National Catholic Schools Week with the 11:15 a.m. Sunday parish Mass. The theme of this year’s Catholic School Week is contained in four words: “Learn, Serve, Lead and Succeed.” This is the formula that Jesus used as he called his disciples. It is the focus of the Church calling each of us to holiness. Let us open our minds and hearts to allow the Lord to touch us.

May you be blessed with the very best this week. You are in my daily thoughts and prayers.
