Transcript of Serra Catholic High School - Fall 2012 Newsletter
This school year is off to a wonderful start at Serra! On Thursday, September 20, 2012, the
Cardinal Newman Society named Serra Catholic High School as a recipient of the Catholic High
School Honor Roll. Since 2004, the Honor Roll has recognized excellence in Catholic identity, aca-
demics and civic education at Catholic high schools across the United States. The Honor Roll pro-
vides a powerful resources to parents and educators by acknowledging those schools that best
maintain high academic standards, uphold their Catholic identities, and prepare students to ac-
tively engage the world.
Of the nation’s approximate 1,200 Catholic high schools, the Top 50 are selected after a
rigorous competition to be named on the Honor Roll. Serra Catholic High School President, Mrs.
Diane DiNardi, acknowledged the outstanding performances by both students and staff. Mrs.
DiNardi remarked, “We are exceptionally grateful and excited to be recognized by the Cardinal
Newman Society as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the nation. Everyday our students
follow Serra’s motto: Always Forward, Never Back. They faithfully use
the gifts given to them by God to achieve academic and personal excel-
lence while providing service to their church and community. I applaud
our students, parents, faculty, and staff for their wonderful dedication
and commitment to our mission.”
The Catholic High School Honor Roll was created by the Acton
Institute in 2004. The Cardinal Newman Society assumed the program
this year, consistent with its mission of helping Catholic families and
promoting faithful Catholic education.

Dear Alumni and Friends:
This has been a very exciting year for Serra. I am thrilled to tell
you that the Cardinal Newman Society named Serra one of the Top 50
Catholic High Schools in the Nation! This is a tremendous honor which
recognizes excellence in academics, Catholic identity, and civics educa-
tion. We celebrated this achievement with a special Mass; and the pride,
joy, and appreciation felt by every member of our community created an
atmosphere full of energy and excitement.
Furthermore, in September every student was issued a Chromebook—Google’s laptop—for
exclusive use during the school year. The overwhelmingly positive response we have received from
students, faculty, and parents is encouraging and exciting. When you add Chromebooks to Serra’s
outstanding curriculum, which includes the opportunity for our students to earn up to a year of college
credit in high school, we are setting the bar high.
Also in September, we recognized our second class of distinguished alums. This year’s hon-
orees have set themselves apart through their accomplishments, service to their communities, and the
fine example they demonstrate daily for those who follow in their footsteps. Please read their abbrevi-
ated biographies in this newsletter, and visit our website for more information about the event.
Finally, in October we hosted our annual Open House for prospective students. The record
number of families who joined us that evening was more than encouraging. We look forward to a full
class of incoming freshmen, eager to join our family and grow through our challenging curriculum,
faithful teaching, and extensive athletic and extracurricular programs.
I hope you feel a sense of pride in the accomplishments of your alma mater. As a Serra gradu-
ate and friend, you are part of a community which is growing, one which is changing young lives in a
positive way—a community created to bring each of our young men and women closer to God.
Please keep Serra in your prayers that we may continue our mission. With almost 5,000 Serra
alumni and thousands more graduates from St. Peter High School, Divine Redeemer Academy, and
Mon Yough Catholic High School, a gift at any level from each and everyone could do wondrous things
for your school.
May God bless you,

A turbulent “technological wind” has swept through
Serra Catholic High School this Fall! Each student was issued a
“present” at the beginning of the school year that will have a
huge impact on their education going forward. It was literally a
Christmas morning scene as the students ripped open the boxes
that contained their Google Chromebooks for the first time.
Each student has been issued their own personal laptop to use in the classroom for their
studies. Faculty are now able to engage students through the use of various web-based
courses, digital textbooks and paperless homework. They have also been linked with
their own Google accounts to manage their weekly assignments.
The word spread like wildfire about this exciting upgrade – so much that WTAE
News stopped by the school this September to visit our students and staff in action with
their Chromebooks! Mike Clark reported that “Snow days are no longer an excuse to
take a day off from learning at Serra Catholic High School!” This statement is very ap-
propriate now that all students and faculty can log in and attend
class from home. If there are snow days, cancellations or emer-
gencies which would prevent students from physically being in-
side of the school building, this will not prevent a day of learn-
ing at Serra Catholic. Our plan was already put into action
when Hurricane Sandy caused a school cancellation at the end
of October. Although students were not in the building, class
continued from home through the power of our Chromebooks and our Google applica-
tions.
Serra has been working with Cloudcast, the only certified
retailer of the Google apps, to roll out the Chromebooks. Patrick
Sullivan, a 2012 Serra graduate who is currently attending Penn
State University in McKeesport, is an intern with Cloudcast and
is certified to train the services provided by Google. Patrick has
spent tireless hours working with students, faculty and staff to
assure that this transition has been flawless. Serra is so grateful
to have him as our very own “Google Expert.” A whole new
world of learning awaits those who enter Serra’s doors for years to
come!
THANK YOU to John Paul Pascasio and his team at Cloudcast for all of their
hard work to get Serra up and running with Google computing!

20th Annual Serra Catholic
Juniper’s Journey Auction:
“Building for the Future”
April 21, 2012
2012 Spring Event Highlights!
On April 21, 2012, we gathered for our 20th Annual Juniper’s Journey
Auction. The theme of this year’s event was “Building for the Future” to high-
light our Capital Campaign project that was launched in April of 2012. All auc-
tion proceeds benefit the future of Serra students. This year we had a guest
auctioneer, Leonard Davis, from Harry Davis & Co., who auctioned off items
such as dinner with Bishop Zubik, a full one-year Serra tuition scholarship, ad-
ditional college scholarships and a vacation at the Wyndham Cyprus Palms in
Florida with four Disney passes! There were also many crowd-pleasing raffles.
The event was once again a success and we would like to thank our volunteers,
donors and sponsors!
SAVE THE DATE: Next year’s auction will be held on April 6, 2013….more details to follow!
As the current director of Serra’s musicals, I have to admit that each year when the curtain is ready to
rise on opening night, I am filled with a sense of anticipation, excitement, and pure terror. Last year’s produc-
tion of Hello, Dolly was no exception. I know any cast’s potential weaknesses and always fear that the first ap-
pearance in front of an audience might manifest those flaws. As the curtain rose on Hello, Dolly, however, magic
happened. The actress who had a few weak lines spoke them flawlessly, the waiters’ difficult dance numbers
were performed with exceptional energy (even though an occasional “left foot” made its presence known), no one
was killed while jumping into or out of the extension through the trapdoor, the chefs’ costumes were finished
without a moment to spare, no one developed laryngitis, and the stage crew moved the monster sets in record
time. As for me, I realized once again how much I had enjoyed working with our students over the previous few
months and how sad I was that the seniors would not be returning for the next year’s production of The Boys
from Syracuse. Perhaps more than anything else, however, I was so proud of every person on that stage...proud
of the hard work, dedication, talent, perseverance, and self-confidence that had developed and come to fruition
as the curtain opened. My only hope was that those students on and behind stage had had as much fun as I!

On Friday, May 11, 2012, Serra alumni and mem-
bers of the White Oak Rotary gathered at Serra Catholic
High School for Career Day. The presenters shared their
accomplishments, professional responsibilities, expertise,
and experience with the students. After a morning of
informative presentations, alumni and other members of
the business community gathered for lunch in Serra’s
Friary. This event was a wonderful way to conclude the
2011-2012 school year!

May 31, 2012, appeared to be an average day in downtown Oakland with
rush-hour traffic blocking every street. But for 102 young adults proceeding into St.
Paul’s Cathedral accompanied by the powerful skirl of the bagpipes, May 31st will be
forever in their hearts as the night they flew from the hallowed nest of Serra Catholic
High School.
After celebrating the Liturgy of the Word, Fr. Alexis Anania, second Head-
master of Serra Catholic, introduced our distinguished commencement speaker for
the evening, Mr. Edward Deenihan of the Serra class of 1969. Fr. Alex noted his sub-
stantial success, including a Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from the University of
Detroit and considerable contributions to the technology company, NetApp. Fr.
Alexis then thanked him for his continued dedication to his alma mater, saying that
Ed Deenihan helped “Serra enter a new stage in the school’s history and generate a
strong forward-looking plan with his contributions to the new physics lab.”
Mr. Deenihan, visibly moved and surprised with the introduction by his for-
mer headmaster, recounted the day he was asked to address our graduates. Humbled
but excited, he immediately began his research on memorable commencement ad-
dresses. Sharing life-long lessons was a central theme--but most important was the
admonition to “keep it brief!” a statement which elicited a round of laughter from
the audience.
Mr. Deenihan noted the impressive changes in our lives created through ad-
vancements in technology, and he mentioned that the same opportunities which ena-
bled him to succeed in the tech sector were still available for Serra’s most recent graduates. He encouraged the
students to seize the innumerable opportunities that exist in our world today and seek out careers dealing with
issues such as alternative fuel sources, medical engineering, and transportation -- including the “amazing” fuel-
less cars, one of which he proudly drives.
Deenihan shared an experience with a Russian colleague in the mid 80s who was enthralled by the copi-
ous amounts of knowledge and information available in the United States. Mr. Deenihan asked, “What would
you have done if you were born in 1920?” “His eyes lit up and he said, ‘Radio.’” The significance of this remark,
observed Deenihan, was that opportunities are always out there for one to grab onto.
Mr. Deenihan then focused his address on the necessity and importance of leadership in these rapidly
changing times. He expressed his belief that while there are thousands of seminars, books, and symposiums on
how to be an effective leader, one can only become one by watching others and most importantly, through expe-
rience. He touched on a few key qualities of leadership: getting out of one’s comfort zone, staying focused, em-
bracing change, and learning from both success and failure. Above all, he maintained that a leader must focus on
the success of his followers, “something that we don’t see much of today.”
To close his speech, Deenihan commented on the unchanging and most imperative values of a leader,
faith and family, something he thinks about daily. “Today is a great day for you to thank God for everything
He has done for you and for how fortunate you are.” Edward Deenihan is the epitome of the few humble leaders
that are left in America, but one of many humble leaders that Serra Catholic has guided to their destiny.

On Friday, October 5, 2012,
the students and faculty of Serra
Catholic participated in their Annual
Homecoming Walk-A-Thon. This
year’s walk was in honor of Nick
Conn, graduate of the Class of 2007.
Nick sadly lost his life to melanoma at
the age of 21. A swarm of students
wearing specially designed red shirts
walked the local streets to raise aware-
ness for the mission of Miles Against
Melanoma. We are so happy that
Nick’s mom and classmates were able
to join us for this very special day!

Yes, you did read that correctly! Serra is thrilled to announce that several of its teachers
have been named adjunct professors by local universities and are now sanctioned to teach college
courses to our students. We are pleased to offer 63 college and university credits. Many of those
credits are provided by Seton Hill University and St. Vincent College and will readily transfer to
other schools. Through this program, Serra students may earn up to a year of college credit. Fur-
thermore, Seton Hill and St. Vincent have promised admission and significant scholarships to Serra
students who successfully participate in our college-in-high-school program.
At this year’s Back to School Night in September, parents were able to meet with represent-
atives from Seton Hill University and Saint Vincent College to discuss the option of earning college
credits. This program speaks volumes for Serra’s mission and will prepare our students for college
long before they graduate. Learn more on our website about the courses that we offer and you will
know why Serra continues to be a leading provider of education!

Serra Alumni named Emerging Leaders at Saint Francis University!
It has been quite a first semester of college for two re-
cent Serra graduates! Nick Astle ’12 and Megan Sayles ’12 have
both been accepted into the Emerging Leaders program at
Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA. The Emerging Lead-
ers are a group of students who have demonstrated leadership
in their organizations, both in high school and on campus. A
total of twelve incoming freshmen were selected this year to be
a part of the group.
The Emerging Leaders are responsible for many events
on campus, both for students and non-students. They are the
flagship program of the F.L.A.S.H. initiative (Franciscan
Leaders Achieve, Serve and Honor) which Serra has partici-
pated in several times. Serra wishes Nick and Megan the best
as they continue to reach their educational goals during their
years at Saint Francis University!
Great job,
Nick & Megan!

YOU make the real difference in the lives and education of current and future
students of Serra Catholic High School. Participation in the Annual Fund is extremely
important, and supporting the fund every year makes a difference daily at Serra, from
our morning prayer until the lights turn off in the gym. We know that with your help
we can continue to move Serra in a direction of success!
Going forward, we want to “challenge” our classes to participate in the Serra
Catholic Annual Fund Drive. Each winning class will be recognized for their donations
to the annual fund based on the highest percentage of participation, highest average do-
nation and most money donated (these numbers will be generated based on a class total,
not individual amounts). The winning classes will be listed in our Fall 2013 issue of
Siempre Adelante!
As an individual, you have a chance to be placed on our very own “Honor Roll of
Donors.” Those donors who make gifts to the Annual Fund within the fiscal year of
July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 will be recognized by the categories listed on the
next page.
Will you accept the

Renovated Locker Rooms!
Do you remember what the locker rooms looked like when you were a student? Well, some
major changes took place this summer! Both the girls and boys locker rooms have been complete-
ly renovated for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to those who donated the funds to support
this project. Check out some photos below and come to see them in person by making a visit to
your alma mater soon! Our special thanks to Michael ‘70 and Carol Linn and Bob Mistick
‘67/Mistick Construction.
Welcome back, Jennifer!
We are pleased to announce that Jennifer Stoessel Salvador, class
of 2000, has returned to the Eagles’ Nest as our new Development Di-
rector. Jennifer is a graduate of both Robert Morris and Seton Hall
Universities. She brings to us a wealth of experience in the areas of de-
velopment, alumni relations, and event planning. Perhaps, most im-
portant, is her personal experience as a member of our Serra family and
her belief in and commitment to sustaining our mission.
Jennifer joins Sandra Barbieri, Development Coordinator and
Assistant to the President. Sandra has been a valuable member of our
development staff since 2009. She has been instrumental in incorporat-
ing technology into all development functions while reaching out to
alumni and supporters. She is also a parent of a Serra alum--class of
2011--as well as an incoming freshman--future class of 2017.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT…
Leave a legacy for Serra that goes beyond donating money. Volunteering for events, serving
on the board and getting others involved is the way you can leave a positive legacy.

Serra’s Campaign for the Future is now underway; and in the first few
months, we have already secured commitments over a half million dol-
lars. Please consider participating in our program to ensure that your alma ma-
ter continues to provide an outstanding education to the youth of our area.
Every gift, every commitment--from $1 to $1M--will help us reach our
goals. First and foremost is the need to build an Endowment for Scholar-
ships. No private educational institution can succeed with such a fund. By year
-end, Serra will have created an Endowment, with funds on deposit. Consider
joining this effort. Make your gift before the end of the year, and reap the tax
benefits, as well.
If you would prefer a “bricks and mortar” project, please review our
campaign literature on our website on the “Campaign for the Future” tab under
“About Serra.”
You can be a part of something special. The Cardinal Newman Society
has acknowledged what you already know--Serra Catholic High School is one of
the Top Catholic High Schools in the nation. Help us preserve and grow your
school. Contact me today to join this wonderful effort!

Send your Tax Dollars to Serra!
YOU have the chance to decide where to send your tax dollars. Why not make an impact on
the lives of our children at the same time? Read on to learn more about two Pennsylvania pro-
grams which allow businesses to send their state taxes to Serra Catholic High School!
Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC)
This program allows you to send your state tax dollars to Serra to provide tuition assistance to eligi-
ble families. Tax credits are then awarded to businesses who contribute to a scholarship organization.
Your business’ taxes then become a donation to Serra Catholic High School! (You will find a full list of our
current EITC partners on page 20)
Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC)
This newly introduced program provides tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to an Oppor-
tunity Scholarship Organization (Serra Catholic). Business contributions will be used by Serra to provide
scholarships to eligible students who reside within the boundaries of a low-achieving school district. Many
of Serra’s students are eligible to participate in this program. This is a tremendous opportunity to give
children the chance to attend Serra! Funding is still available at this time. Applications will be approved
until the amount of available tax credits is exhausted.
Be a part of this WIN-WIN opportunity!

Members of the Mon Yough Catholic High School
Class of 1972 gathered on Saturday evening, September 2,
2012, at The Rose Bar & Grille in White Oak to kick off
their 40th Reunion weekend celebration. In total, about 18
classmates enjoyed getting reacquainted that evening.
On Sunday morning, September 3, 2012, the group
gathered together for Mass. The Reunion Liturgy was cele-
brated by Fr. Francis Lackowicz at St. Patrick’s in Christy
Park. Everyone was delighted to welcome their Music
teacher, Mrs. Mary Shatlock, as the organist for the liturgy.
Following Mass, 24 of the 72 classmates gathered for brunch
at the Youghiogheny Country Club and enjoyed an after-
noon visit.
These women comprised the last graduating class of
the Diocesan Catholic High School for girls in McKeesport.
The class was a blend of girls who spent their first two years
at either St. Peter’s or Divine Redeemer Academy and their
last two years in the old St. Peter’s building on Market St.
Their graduation marked the closing of the Catholic School
that served our community for 100 years. A great time was
had by all!

On the evening of September 22, 2012, the lights from the Pittsburgh skyline sparkled
against the ladies’ jewelry and the men’s freshly polished dress shoes as they mingled their way into
the Fountain View Room of the Sheraton in Station Square. Wine glass stems were slowly imprint-
ing their red ink onto the tablecloths, the gentle strokes of lipstick were seeping into the linen nap-
kins, the reds competing with one another against their white canvas’, something of a make-shift
Jackson Pollock painting. Later in the evening, a triple chocolate mousse torte was making its way
from the dessert plates onto longing palates, the forks barely lifted to mouth level before being en-
joyed – but this was only the second highlight of the evening. The first, undoubtedly, were the sto-
ries of success, compassion, determination, and humility from the seven Serra Alumni honored at the
2nd Annual Alumni Dinner. Each speaker, regardless of their graduating year or career path accredit-
ed their success to the senses of scholarship, ambition, and fraternity instilled within them, as well as
the Serra family’s nurturing nature. Moreover, it is worth noting that each of the alumni were ex-
ceptionally humble, owing their achievements to the love of their family, teachers, and God.

Thomas W. Braum, Class of 1965
Tom is a very dear member of the Serra Catholic Family. After graduating,
he pursued a Mechanical Engineering Degree and MBA at the University of Detroit
Jesuit. He then spent 13 years working in the auto industry in Detroit followed by a
career at MCI. Due to job re-positioning, Tom was let go at the age of 50, a part of
the Worldcom acquisition of MCI. Tom had the good fortune and vision to start a
small private family foundation. This has allowed him and his wife, Marion, to
make grants to needy people and organizations they encounter in their travels. For
the last eight years they have lived in a 40’ Motor Coach traveling the country to
offer their support on a number of volunteer projects. Tom continues to support Serra
and would love to see more scholarship funds available for deserving students. He believes that they, too,
will benefit from the life-long values that come with a Catholic school education.
Laureen Leptinsky Costa, Class of 1986
After graduating high school, Laureen attended Bucknell University and
received a BA in Economics. She worked for two years in commercial lending and
then attended The Amos School of Business at Dartmouth College where she
earned her MBA. She is now a Managing Director at JPMorgan Asset Management
where she serves as a Portfolio Manager in the private quite group. Laureen and
her husband, Michael, were married by Serra’s own Father Alexis Anania. Laureen
and Michael believe in the value of education and have established The Edward
Leptinsky Scholarship at Bucknell University. The Scholarship shall be awarded to
students who demonstrate financial need, with preference for students from Serra
Catholic High School. We are thankful to Laureen for her continued support and
proud to recognize her as a Distinguished Alumna.
Sister Bernadette Washy, Class of 1958, Divine Redeemer Academy
We were very proud to celebrate this year’s Honorary Alumna, Sister Ber-
nadette Washy. Sister Bernadette began her career at Serra Catholic in 1975, cre-
ating wonderful memories until her retirement in 1990. Over the years, Sister made
it her mission to make learning more fun and stimulating. In doing so, she devel-
oped a new way of teaching to actively engage her students. Sister “B”, along with
her students, won many science competitions, some of which were international!
She considered all of the students of Serra Catholic her children and has many
warmhearted memories. Even though she is no longer teaching at the school, Sis-
ter B feels as if she never left and would love the legacy of Serra’s quality educa-
tion to live on forever. She is remembered fondly by students, faculty and staff.
Sister changed lives through her dedication to Serra and our students. We thank
Sister Bernadette for her hard work and dedication to Serra!

member to thank God for all the gifts they have been given by Him. Ed is currently
an Executive Vice President at NetApp, leading Global Support, Quality and Cus-
tomer Advocacy, and Information Technology. In addition to his career, Ed is dedi-

funds to support tuition assistance and scholarships for our students as well as capi-
tal improvements. His belief in the value of a Serra education is the driving force behind his efforts.

Intro
Introduction by Mrs. Diane DiNardi, Serra President:
While reading the newspaper early one morning, a special glossy
insert tumbled into my lap. On the cover was a picture of an imposing
man— A Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, Victor Pribanic. I knew the name
well—the quaint Victorian home that has been converted into his office
and bears his name sits in White Oak, the beautiful little community, just
a stone’s throw from our campus. Furthermore, I recalled that Victor is a member of our Serra
family—an alum from the class of 1972. I enjoyed a visit with Victor shortly thereafter. His
passion for helping his clients was evident as he provided a brief history of his life after Ser-
ra. In fact, just weeks after we met, I was moved while reading another article regarding one of
Victor’s most recent cases. A mother’s CT scan was misread, leading to her death. She had been
the primary caregiver for her severely disabled son. Victor’s perseverance and skill led to a ver-
dict in favor of her son, which will provide a lifetime of funds for his care. Clearly, cases such as
this take an emotional toll and require immense dedication and commitment. In fact, Victor
joked that he had little time for a personal life as he was “married to his job.” His commitment
to his mission—to help those who have been injured—is commendable. We are proud to count
Victor as a member of our Serra family. He truly uses his God-given talents each and every day!
Interview by Mr. Nicholas Astle, Serra class of 2012:
Recently, I had the privilege to speak with Victor Pribanic, Serra class of ‘72, of Pribanic
and Pribanic Law Offices. Dressed casually, ensconced in an office that could pass for a parlor,
Mr. Pribanic clearly showed that his work is not something he dreads, but a career that he pours
his heart into every day!
Law, according to Mr. Pribanic, was not a “lifelong calling.” Even when he had begun to
explore it as a career, he was not certain which specialty to pursue. An original goal to become a
trial lawyer led him to the District Attorney’s office. Eventually, he started his own practice,
dealing primarily with personal injury and malpractice cases.
Pribanic’s job is rarely easy, and he must overcome obstacles every step of the way. “The
most difficult aspect of my job,” he said, “is that decades of hype from Corporate America…has
poisoned people’s attitudes toward clients and lawyers. Many people—people who often end up
on juries—are suspicious of any plaintiff because of the supposed amount of frivolous law-
suits.” (Cont’d pg. 25)
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Victor Pribanic, Class of 1972
Page 25 VOLUME 17, ISSUE 2
In actuality, he claimed, very few unnecessary lawsuits
could make it to trial. Pribanic stated that the inflated num-
ber, in public opinion, is due to media hype over a few unneces-
sary cases. This bias works against him before he even sets foot
in the courtroom, and it is a major stumbling block he must
overcome.
When our discussion turned to the value of a solid educational foundation, Mr. Prib-
anic lamented the lack of reading and writing skills among the new generation of lawyers.
“Some of them…I just have to ask myself how they graduated in the first place.” He sees this
as a major reason Serra graduates excel in so many areas—they learn the critical thinking and
expository skills that are required in any profession.
Despite the obstacles he has faced, Mr. Pribanic has found his place fighting for the
rights of those who have been injured—so much so that no singular moment stands out as his
proudest. “When you represent people who have children who are injured at birth unneces-
sarily…survivors, accident victims that you can help…it is very gratifying. I have been
blessed with so many high points, it’s hard to distinguish one proudest moment. Every case is
its own battle, and every successful outcome is a victory.”
Mr. Pribanic gives much of the credit for his success to his days at Serra, and he ex-
tolled the value of exposure to the humanities. “I was well prepared by virtue of the really
superb liberal arts education I got at Serra. It was a far more expansive education than what
was available at the public schools at the time.” He was pushed to excel by the inspirational
teachers he encountered at Serra, who gave him the “lust for learning” he found so essential to
success.
English and Biology were two of his favorite subjects, as well as a cinema course taught
by Father Simeon—all of which, he said, prepared him for his career. The film class taught
him to look deeper into situations and to see the more abstract side of things. Biology, he sur-
mised, was what drew him to personal injury cases. Finally, he said that English was what
gave him the critical thinking skills that are invaluable to any professional career.
That was the message he conveyed throughout our discussion,
and the best piece of advice he had for any student—“learn to read well,
learn to write well, and learn to think well.” He said that Serra’s high
expectations demanded excellence of its students. “Excellence breeds
success. If nothing else, everybody who goes to Serra will be well pre-
pared for it, and once you get a taste of that, it feels too good to forgo
after that. Success builds on itself.”
“Excellence breeds success. If
nothing else, everybody who goes
to Serra will be well prepared for
it, and once you get a taste of that,
it feels too good to forgo after
that. Success builds on itself.”
