Tradi t ion In September, 1944, Junípero Serra High School opened its doors with a faculty of five and a student body of eighty-six freshman and sophomore boys. Established by Archbishop Mitty as the Archdiocesan high school to provide for the Catholic educational needs of the boys of San Mateo County, it was named in honor of Padre Junípero Serra, the Apostle of California, and was the first Catholic high school west of the Mississippi to be staffed entirely by diocesan priests. The Reverend Vincent I. Breen was assigned as the first principal of Junípero Serra, which was originally located at Columbia Drive and the Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo, now the site of St. Bartholomew’s parish. A constantly growing student body in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s made it imperative to expand the facilities on the old site or to find a new location and build a larger school. In 1952, the present twelve and one-half acre site was purchased by the Archdiocese from the San Mateo Gymkhana Club, and the Reverend Edward R. Allen was appointed the new principal to guide the school during this time of rapid expansion and building. There were 576 students and a faculty of 21 in 1955, when classes began at the new campus on West Twentieth Avenue in San Mateo. The new facility provided for the continued growth of Junípero Serra. In 1986, Junipero Serra embarked on a program to renovate the entire physical plant to ensure that the school would be able to meet the needs of its students and of the community of San Mateo County. Serra’s Capital Campaign, which began in 1999, is providing for major renovations, greater financial support for students, and improving the benefits offered to faculty and staff.
The campus and the faces of Junípero Serra may have changed over the past sixty years, but our mission has remained the same. We continue to develop the gifts and talents of each student and foster gospel values in an environment of academic excellence and mutual respect. A graduate of Junípero Serra High School is a mature Christian who lives a life of faith and service and who, like Blessed Junípero Serra, finds Christ in and brings Christ to the people with whom he lives, works and serves.

As we begin our 60th year of service, we remain steadfast in our mission — to provide our students the finest college preparatory education possible and, more importantly, to assist them in their moral, emotional and spiritual development.
This mission is alive and well at Serra!
Serra High School is very healthy academically, socially and spiritually. Our building program is well under way. Our enrollment is at an all time high and our waiting list has never been longer. At the same time, the number of students who need financial aid has also never been higher. With your help we are able to continue our mission to help students become men of faith and service. With your help we will continue to educate leaders who will make a difference for the good in our world.
Last fall each of the Religion classes went to Carmel Mission to learn about Fr. Serra and his mission to bring the love of Christ to a people oppressed by centuries of abuse and mistreatment. In the chapel, we had a prayer service and I told the freshmen that Fr. Serra’s mission is now theirs. I motioned to his burial site and told the young men that although Fr. Serra’s body was laid to rest almost 200 years ago, his spirit must live on in them. I continued by saying that a true Serra Padre is one who is called to bring the love of Christ to a world marked by injustice, hatred and violence, is one who begins this work at school by treating his classmates and himself with respect, and most importantly is a man who bases his life on the Gospel of Christ — a gospel of faith, hope and love.
I am proud to report that our students live out this call every day.
Fr. Serra’s favorite saying was “Siempre Adelante!” which means, “always move forward!” Serra High School is moving forward, and because of your assistance, we will continue to do so. On behalf of our students, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to those whose names appear in this Annual Report.

DEAR FRIENDS OF JUNIPERO SERRA,
Archbishop Mitty, 1944, (founding Archbishop); Father John L. Zoph (1944-1999); Jess Freitas (1950-55; 60-62; 65-97); Father Thomas Kennedy (1944-49; 55-61); Ken Houle (1954-1996); Father Stephen Howell (1975-2002) . . . YOU, 2004. A sixty year span . . . What do we have in common? They, and you, have been the founders and supporters of Junipero Serra High School. Without them and without you, where would we be today?
As the 2004-2005 school year commences, Serra students are returning to a different campus than the one they left on June 5th. We have already replaced the parking lots on the east and south sides of the campus. We have already relocated much of the school’s infrastructure to different parts of the campus, and we have replaced the main pipe line behind the gym through which the creek on our campus runs. Traffic patterns have definitely changed!! The faculty and staff are getting their daily exercise, walking to and from the parking lot at California Casualty (20th & Alameda), as the parking situation changes each day. For the next few months, there will be no parking on the west side of the campus. Huge construction trucks, earth movers and backhoes rumble around our campus. A cavernous hole, with almost 10,000 cubic yards of dirt being removed, has temporarily replaced the parking lot behind the football scoreboard in anticipation of a new parking structure.
In addition to the above, we will have in place by the time school opens for the 2005-2006 school year new baseball bleachers with seating for 400 fans. Underneath will be a new team locker room with bathroom facilities. By the start of the new school year, we will also have new football bleachers for 1200 spectators. Our weight room and wrestling room will be located in this building. Finally, behind the gymnasium and at the start of the track, we will build much needed storage areas for the school.
These improvements and more are being made for the young men at Serra now and in the years to come because of your support of Building For Our Future. We would like to thank all the individuals, corporations, and foundations who have helped to strenghten our community of faith during this past year. As we continue to enhance our programs, let us remember all those in our community who are no longer with us. Let their memory serve as a reminder of our goals, our accomplishments, and the the spirit of Junipero Serra High School. This is our commitment -- to remember and cherish the past, to understand and assimilate the present, and to accept and grow in the future.

from the Parent Pledge Program have
directly impacted our educational
technology fund, and have funded state-
of-the-art classroom projectors and
sophisticated media use labs.
Most recently, this money has been
directed to the Building Fund, funding the
new football field and track. In the future,
the Parent Pledge Program will help
reshape the face of our campus, helping
us realize our dream of making Junipero
Serra the “destination school” for San
Mateo County.

Why do I contribute to the education program at Serra ? The answer is simple. It is my way of giving something back to place that gave me more than I ever imagined. It was not until I enlisted in the United States Army after graduation that I had a full grasp of the education I had received at Serra. I had enlisted because my number was up in the lottery (remember that) and I wanted a choice in my job. I was trained as a Military Policeman and saw service in Virginia and Germany. My high school education was so far and above the majority of people that I had to deal with, I had a hard time dealing with it. When one has “superiors” who could not construct an English sentence correctly, it made dealing with those types of individuals difficult. After my service time, I bounced around a lot and finally settled in Amador County. I went to work with the Department of Corrections at Mule Creek State Prison. In less than six years, I was promoted to Sargeant. I finally reached a station in life where I could afford to start giving something back to those that had helped me be who I am today. One of those places is Serra High School. I started small but was faithful in writing that check each month. The amount has increased over the years but the intent has never wavered. This is my way of saying thank-you to all the fine people and educators who helped me be who I am today.

AND HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY . . . .
Serra High School has played a big role in my life. Coming from Mt. Carmel in Redwood City and meeting Father Zoph, Father Kavanaugh, Father Frank Hurley, Father John Ring, and so many, many great priests and lay teachers instilled in me a desire to be a person for others.
After graduating from USF, I came to Washington DC in the 60’s and entered the computer business, where I have my own company today. While with Xerox in the 70’s, I went on two sabbaticals serving as the Peace Corps Director in West Aftrica for two years and serving as the Chief Administrator of the Hospital Ship Hope in Brazil for one year.
The Serra influence continues today as I serve on the boards and operating committees of a number of non-profit organizations, including the Jesuit Volunteer Corps., the Knights of Malta, the Woodstock Theological Center and a very large homeless shelter in Washington -- so others might eat.
The seed for this service to others was planted at Serra.

For us, Serra is simply the right thing to do. Our family’s ties with Serra go back to 1979, when our first son entered as a freshman.
For twenty-one years, our five boys, Mark, Shawn, Christopher, Jonathan and Richard graduated andmoved on to colleges and universities of their choice -- with our youngest son graduating from a university this year.
Our family feels strongly that Serra has the unique ability to make all the students feel like winners. They are able to accomplish this in combination with intellectual excellence on one hand and moral structures and principles on the other.

Putting our boys at Serra High School was the best decision we have ever made.
Everything we have ever wanted for our sons has come true. The commitment to God has been strenghtened by the brotherhood they have built with their new friends. Academically, we were blessed with teachers who have inspired our boys to challenge themselves and not to settle for less.
Supporting Serra comes easy to us. Barb and I were always raised to support all schools. But . . . Serra is special to us. Giving when you have received so much is effortless. We all have something to give. There are so many ways to do it.
All children are our future. It sounds like a cliché until you see your children approaching adulthood so quickly. Giving to Serra means that not only do our own sons benefit, but generations of sons to come. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be here.

The greatest number of gifts come
to Junípero Serra High School as
direct donations. Typically, such gifts
are deductible items for federal and
California state income tax purposes,
subject to certain limitations. There
can be additional tax advantages
in donating appreciated property,
securities and other assets.
A bequest is a wonderful way to
remember Serra. A donor may
include a bequest to Serra High
School in a will. A bequest maybe
for a specific amount, a percentate
of the donor’s estate, or a residual
portion. Bequests can help offset
estate taxes and may allow a donor to
make a significant gift that might not
have been possible during his or her
lifetime.
A family endowment may be
established to endow a scholarship
for a Serra student. A minimum target
donation of $10,000 is needed to
establish an endowment.
A memorial endowment may be
established to honor a loved one. All
those listed in our memorial book are
remembered in a monthly mass.
Real estate gifts are among the
most valuable contributions you can
make to ensure the future of Serra.
Real estate can be given outright or
can be deeded to the school, while
you continue to occupy the property.
It is possible to create a sizable tax
deduction by deeding such a gift.
By naming Junípero Serra High
School the beneficiary of your life
insurance policy, you may receive
a tax deduction. Life insurance
contributions can be an attractive
option when the donor’s family is
grown and life insurance may be of
less importance.
