Transcript of Serpentine Pavilion Lecture 1
Hi!
Nida’ Muhsen
The pavilions to follow will address :
• Merging with the site.
• Isolating the building from the site.
• Blurring the boundaries between outdoor and indoor space.
• A building which responds to its functions.
SANAA:
“The pavilion is floating aluminum, drifting freely between the trees like smoke. It is a sheltered extension of the park where people can read, relax and enjoy lovely summer days.”
Sejima Nishazawa
SANAA -transparency
-lightness
-reflection
“It works as a field of activity with no walls, allowing views to extend uninterrupted across the park and encouraging access from all sides.”
“The reflective canopy undulates across the site, expanding the park and sky. Its appearance changes according to the weather, allowing it to MELT into the surroundings”

The Algorithm
some more algorithms …
AND ………
THE END PRODUCT!
The structure is the creator of the form, and the spacial experience
a space always adjusts to new functions when human interaction comes into play
Remember:
IT IS NEVER A BAD THING!
Peter Zumthor
Zumthor says his design ‘aims to help its audience take the time to relax, to observe and then, perhaps, start to talk again – maybe not.’
It’s always about the people!

Building
Zumthor created a garden within a garden, and stimulated emotions in between
The Dramatic Sandwich
“in transition”
So in conclusion: he isolated, he intrigued , then he……..
….opened up
Do you agree?
NOW.. A pavilion that is
• A non-pavilion
• A non-enclosure
• A non-structure
Who else would do that but the infamous….. ………..Wait for it
REM KOOLHAAS
Rem wanted the pavilion to question the idea of the pavilion itself.
“An inflatable ovoid sits in the green like a ‘cosmic egg’”
Anonymous
The inflatable structure rises and falls depending on the activity, event, and weather conditions
He was aiming for an experience of which the indoor activities were reflected on the outdoor,
and the outdoor would affect the indoor.
THANKS!
