Keeping In Step with the Spirit !
~ Galatians 5:16-25 ~
Peter Pan: The Boy Who Refused to Grow Up
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ.”
~ The Apostle Peter in 2 Peter 3:18
How do we GROW
spiritually? ?
“The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says, “Give me all! I don’t want so much of your time, so much of
your talents and money, and so much of your work. I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No
half measures are any good….
Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked—the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead.
In fact, I will give you myself.“
”~ CS Lewis Mere Christianity
Keeping in Step with the Spirit to Live the Kind of Life Jesus Died to Give Us
Keeping In Step with the Spirit !
~ Galatians 5:16-25 ~
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and
Galatians 5:16
you will not gratify the desires ofthe flesh….
“…who walk not according to the
flesh but according to the Spirit.”
~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 8:4
“…walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,
fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in
every good work and increasing in the
knowledge of God.”~ The Apostle Paul in
Colossians 1:10
For the desires of the flesh are
Galatians 5:17
against the desires of the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit areagainst the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep youfrom doing the things you want todo…
But if you are led by the Spirit, you
Galatians 5:18
are not under the law….
“…just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, we too might walk in
newness of life.” ~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 6:4
Now the works of the flesh are
Galatians 5:19-21
evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunken-ness, orgies, and things like these.
I warn you, as I warned you before,
Galatians 5:19-21
that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God….
But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
Galatians 5:22-23
joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-ness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there isno law….
And those who belong to Christ
Galatians 5:24
Jesus have crucified the flesh withwith its passions and desires….
~ The Apostle Paul in Romans 6:11
“Consider yourself dead to sin and
alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
If we live by the Spirit, let us also
Galatians 5:25
keep in step with the Spirit.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also
keep in step with the Spirit.
Main Idea
Root yourself deeply in the Gospel.
1
~ The Apostle Paul in Colossians 2:6-7
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and
built up in him and established in the faith, just
as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
“Spiritual growth is not about moving on from where we began—the
gospel. It’s about growing deeper in
the gospel. Or rather, getting the gospel deeper into us.”
“The gospel does not command us to do anything
in order to obtain life, but bids us live by that which
another has done; and the knowledge of its life-giving
truth is not labour but rest—rest of soul—rest which is
the root of all true labour…;
~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889
“…for in receiving Christ we do not work in order to rest, but we rest in order to work. In believing, we cease to work for pardon, in order
that we may work from it…; ~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889
“…and what incentive to work, as well as joy in
working, can be greater than an ascertained and realized forgiveness?”
~ Horatius Bonar 1808-1889

“Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
steadfastness, gentleness.”
~ The Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:11
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith,
love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure
heart.”
~ The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 2:22
Bishop JC Ryle 1816-1900
When I speak of growth in grace I only mean
increase in the degree, size, strength, vigor and
power of the graces which the Holy Spirit plants in a believer’s
heart….
Bishop JC Ryle 1816-1900
When I speak of a man growing in grace, I mean simply this—that his sense of sin is becoming deeper, his faith stronger, his hope
brighter, his love more extensive, his spiritual-
mindedness more marked.
Bishop JC Ryle 1816-1900
He feels more of the power of godliness in his own heart. He manifests more of it in his life. He is going on from strength to
strength, from faith to faith, and from grace to
grace.
