SCRIPTURE READINGS

FOR TODAY

Isaiah 42:1-7 NKJV

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. He will not fail nor be discouraged, till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Thus says God the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it: “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.

Acts 10:34-38 NKJV Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by

Him. The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 NKJV

Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”…

When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

Prayer of the Church

Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

(Minute of silence for individual prayer and meditation) P: Almighty God, we give thanks for all Your goodness and bless You for the love that sustains us from day to day. We praise You for the gift of Your Son, our Savior, in whom we have the forgiveness of sins. We thank You for the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, for Your holy Church, for the Means of Grace, for the lives of believers here and in every place, and for the hope of the life to come. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Send the light of Your Word and Sacraments into all the earth. Raise up faithful servants of Christ to advance the Gospel both at home and in distant lands. We pray especially for Pastor Peter Evensen. Bless and guide him as he takes up his work as Your missionary in India. Protect him from all danger. Give Him courage to speak boldly, and aid his adjustment to a foreign culture. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: While the Church grows according to Your plan, strengthen both new and established congregations, supporting them in these challenging times. Make them steadfast, abounding in the work of Christ, and let their faith and zeal for Your Word refresh and renew the witness of Your people everywhere. May our offerings, too, reflect our joy in salvation and our desire that all people would be brought into Your light. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: As Jesus served with gentleness and humility, so grant us His followers the same Spirit of humility, that we may eagerly speak of Your forgiving grace and model it with our care and concern for others. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Bless our homes with Your presence, that our families may be the gift You intend them to be. Help our children grow in faith and understanding, and keep them in the one true faith all their days. Keep the flame of faith burning brightly in all our hearts, that we never take our salvation for granted or become apathetic toward hearing Your Word. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.
