Your group needs to be a safe place for all people to share and to enter the discussion. This means, all members of the group need to follow a few guidelines:

We lead with grace

We respond to one another in light of what Christ has done for us, understanding that we are all in need of His grace, compassion, and mercy.

We treat each other with respect

We can wrestle with ideas and disagree with one another without judgement, personal attack, or dismissal. We don’t laugh at others when they’ve shared and no putdowns of any kind. These are the actions that make others withdraw and feel uneasy about sharing.

We are here to support one another, not ‘fix’ one another

Jesus does the ‘fixing’. Give encouragement, speak truth, and point to Jesus. Don’t try to solve or fix each other.

We commit to confidentiality

What is said in the group should stay in the group unless permission is given to share it elsewhere. This is not to create a dysfunctional group that keeps unhealthy secrets. Instead, it is to create a culture of safety where everyone feels safe to share thoughts and feelings and knows that others will not find out.

We do not crosstalk

Crosstalk is a conversation during discussion time that leaves others out and can be hurtful. Each person is free to express his or her feelings without interruptions.

Your group needs to agree with one another that you are committed to providing a safe place to be encouraged and challenged by the word of God and to let Him do a healing, sanctifying work in your lives.

If you have any concerns, you should speak to your group leader or get in contact with our Community Pastor, Ben Fien ([email protected]).

1st Peter was written to encourage believers to stand fast in the true grace of God (5:12) and to stand firm against the tide of misunderstanding, marginalisation, and even persecution. Christians have been, and always will be, considered weird by the world and, sometimes, even wicked. We should expect this, prepare for it, and, most importantly, know how to respond.

1st Peter helps us to respond. But it calls us to a response we might not expect or even like. It does not call us to fearful despair, smug superiority, or angry retaliation, but rather hopeful resilience, Christ-like humility, and Spirit-empowered service. We are to follow the example of Jesus who endured unjust suffering for the good of others and the glory of God.

1st Peter holds a challenging message for us, but a necessary one: Will we stand with Christ against the tide of the world? And will we do it in a way that reflects the heart and the example of Christ? Join us for the next 10-weeks as we explore these important and challenging questions.

I. God’s Grace and Salvation — 1:1—2:10

a. Live in hope (1:1-12) b. Live in holiness (1:13-21) c. Live in harmony (1:22–2:10)

II. God’s Grace and Submission — 2:11—3:12

a. Submit to authorities (2:11-17) b. Submit to masters (2:18-25) c. Submit in the home (3:1-7) d. Submit in the church (3:8-12)

III. God’s Grace and Suffering — 3:13—5:14

a. Make Jesus Christ Lord (3:13-22) b. Have Christ’s attitude (4:1-11) c. Glorify Christ’s name (4:12-19) d. Look for Christ’s return (5:1-6) e. Depend on Christ’s grace (5:7-14)

(Warren Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, p.387.)

1. The Apostle Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples and closest friends, wrote the book and refers to it in his second letter (2 Peter 3:1).

2. The letter was likely written while Peter was in Rome (referred to as “Babylon” in 5:13) around AD 62-63.

3. At the time of writing, the notorious Emperor Nero was ruling Rome. Within a couple of years, he would have Peter killed for his faith in Jesus.

4. At the time of writing, persecution was not yet widespread or officially sanctioned by the Empire. It was taking place on a local level and seemed to involve verbal abuse and discrimination rather than physical abuse.

5. Peter wrote to believers scattered throughout Asia-Minor (1:1), which is modern-day Turkey.

6. Most likely, the audience primarily consisted of Gentiles (non-Jews; see 1:14, 18; 2:10) who seemed to have been instructed in the Old Testament after their conversion.

7. The purpose of the letter is to encourage believers to both endure suffering and pursue holiness in an evil and hostile culture. This is why the letter moves between two main points: the riches we have in Christ and the responsibilities we have as followers of Christ in a hostile culture.

8. The word “exile” and themes associated with exiles show up throughout the book. Whether the people were literal exiles or spiritual exiles experiencing hostility from the world, this major theme provides the backdrop to the book.

9. The word “grace” is used in every chapter of 1 Peter (1:2, 10, 13; 2:19, 20; 3:7; 4:10; 5:5, 10, 12). Grace is God’s generous favour to undeserving sinners and needy saints. When we depend on God’s grace, we can stand firm against the tide; we can endure suffering and turn trials into a testimony of the goodness and grace of God.

10. At the end of the letter we see that Peter was with John Mark. This is the same Mark who participated in ministry with Paul and Barnabas (Acts 12:25; 13:5, Col. 4:10; 2 Tim. 4:11), whose mother hosted a church (Acts 12:12), and who most likely wrote the Gospel of Mark through the direction and influence of Peter.

There are many meaningful reasons to study 1st Peter, including:

Its rich theology… 1st Peter covers some profound theological territory and some of the great themes of Christian doctrine, including salvation, new birth, trials, suffering, holiness, the word of God, mission, and Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension.

Its practical guidance… Far from a merely theological treatise, 1st Peter also provides practical guidance about how-to-live in light of the gospel and in the midst of a hostile society, covering topics such as submission to government, household relationships including marriage, spiritual gifts, Satan, church leadership, and our relationships with others.

Its striking relevance… Peter wrote to believers who were considered weird and even wicked because of their faith in Jesus Christ, and he offered them guidance about how to live well and wisely in the world (2:12; 3:9, 16; 4:4, 14). Christians today, especially in the West, need guidance and help in knowing how to be a faithful and compelling witness to Jesus among those who find us weird or even wicked.

Its connection to the life of Peter… The Apostle Peter is one of the most engaging characters in the New Testament. Indeed, many Christians identify with the portrait of Peter in the Gospels—eager, devoted, impulsive, but also cowardly in the face of pressure during Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Yet in 1st Peter we encounter a transformed Peter, a Peter full of hope, humility, and resilience. He has been humbled by his failure, transformed by his restoration, and emboldened by Jesus’ example of suffering before glory. In this way, 1st Peter serves as an encouragement to all those who identify with Peter and his struggles and who long to be faithful to Jesus.

1 Peter 1:1-12 (NIV)

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Share Life Building healthy and life-giving relationships

Check in with each other. Share what has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life.

Have you ever felt like a stranger? How did it make you feel?

As a Christian, do you ever feel like a stranger? What makes you stand out?

READ 1 PETER 5:12

Why did Peter write this letter to this group of believers?

How might 1st Peter be a source of instruction and encouragement for us?

READ 1 PETER 1:1-2

An “apostle” is a person who has been sent by another to speak and act for them (v.1). On whose behalf is Peter speaking? Why should this make us listen to what he has to say?

Peter describes these believers as “elect” and as “exiles”. What do each of these words mean? How might these truths bring comfort and reassurance in the midst of suffering and marginalisation? How could it help you this week and into the future to remember you are an ‘elect exile’ in this world?

What does verse 2 teach us about the triune God? What do we learn about each person (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) specifically?

Pursue God Growing in knowledge of God and Christ-likeness

Page 14: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

14

READ 1 PETER 1:3-9

What does it mean to receive “new birth” from God (v.3)? Consider John 1:12-13; 3:3-6 and Galatians 4:4-7

What does it mean that our hope is “living”? How does this “living hope” differ from the hope found in other faiths and in our culture? How should this “living hope” impact your day-to-day living? The way you plan for the future, receive bad news, walk through trials and disappointments, or enjoy earthly blessings?

This new birth also leads to an “inheritance” (v.4). How is this inheritance described? How would this truth bring comfort to Peter’s exiled and suffering audience? How does it bring comfort to you?

Peter refers to “all kinds of trials” (v.6). What are some of the kinds of trials we experience in life? Have a look at these snapshots of different kinds of trials from Peter’s letter:

These Christians were being insulted because of the name of Christ (4:14); People were speaking maliciously against them (3:16); They were being falsely accused of doing wrong (2:12); People thought the way they lived was strange (4:4); Some had family members who did “not believe the word” (3:1); They faced opposition in the spiritual realm (5:8); They still had “sinful desires” raging in their own hearts (2:11).

How many of these difficulties do you identify with?

Page 15: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

15

Pray Always Devoting ourselves to prayer

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

Thank God for the really, really good news of salvation in Jesus and ask that He might help you to enjoy it, walk in it, and share it with others.

READ 1 PETER 1:10-12

Peter’s point in verses 10-12 is that Christians not only have a powerful hope for the future but they also live in a privileged time — “a time when the Messiah has come, and when the Spirit is no longer pointing forward to his coming through the words of the prophets, but proclaiming his coming through the words of all believers” (Juan Sanchez, p. 39). In other words, it is a time for us to get busy calling people to faith in Jesus rather than complaining about how difficult it is to follow Jesus. Today is the day of salvation!

How might this truth change the way you relate to others in your life?

Who can you pray for or reach out to with the good news of glorious salvation in Jesus?

According to verse 7, what is the purpose of trials? Have you ever experienced this in your own life? Consider also James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-4 and 8:18.

What is the danger of trying to avoid or minimize trials and hard things in your life?

How can the reality that Christ is risen and reigning from heaven, together with the certainty of our glorious inheritance, transform our experience of suffering?

Page 16: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

16

1 Peter 1:13-21 (NIV)

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the

grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16

for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17

Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19

but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20

He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21

Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘holy’? Why?

Pursue God Growing in knowledge of God and Christ-likeness

READ 1 PETER 1:13-16

What is the significance of the word “Therefore…” at the beginning of verse 13?

We are given the gift of new birth in Jesus (1:3-12) and then we are called to a new life of holiness as we follow Jesus (1:13-21). Why is it important to get this order right? What is the result when we get it the wrong way?

What does it mean to have a mind that is “alert and fully sober” as we follow Jesus (v.13a)? Consider what the opposite (a dull and drunken mind) might look like.

Page 20: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

20

What does Peter call believers to set their hope on (v.13b)? Why is this important? What might it look like in practice?

What does it mean to be “obedient children” (v.14)? How often do you think of your Christian walk in terms of “obedience” as God’s child? How might it change the way you look at and understand your obedience?

In this passage we are called to be “holy”, which literally means to be “different” or “set apart”. Why are we called to be different (v.15-16)? How should we be different? How should we not be different?

Peter calls on us to pursue holiness in the areas of our lives listed below. Write down the phrases in verses 13-15 that refer to each area:

The way we think:

The way we feel:

The way we act:

Looking closer (v.16): “Be holy, because I am holy” – a way of saying that children of God should bear a family likeness to the character of their heavenly Father (Lev. 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:7). God’s character was revealed in the Old Testament as the basis of human morality and ethics (Ex. 20:1-17; Deut. 5:1-22). But the fullest and final revelation of God’s character is seen in Jesus Christ (John 1:18; Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3). Christians are not expected to be like God in his deity but are to strive for human righteousness as demonstrated by Jesus. This call to holiness means that Christians will set themselves apart from the customs and values of their unbelieving society to live by the character and teachings of Jesus, no longer allowing their previous unbelief to define them.” (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2541)

Pursue God Growing in knowledge of God and Christ-likeness

READ 1 PETER 1:17-21

What two descriptions of God are given in verse 17? Why do you think Peter refers to God as Father and Judge, rather than just one or the other? How does this understanding of God help us to live our lives in “reverent fear” (v.17)? What does this look like practically?

What is revealed about God’s plan to redeem the world through Jesus in verse 20? How does this bring you comfort?

Pray Always Devoting ourselves to prayer

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

Apart from God, where do people place their faith and hope? How can you point those in your life (in your neighbourhood, workplace, school, social relationships, etc.) to the hope we have in Christ (v.21)?

Ask God to help you set your hope on the grace of Jesus so that you might become more like Jesus and live a life that is different for the good of others and the glory of God.

Page 22: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

22

1 Peter 1:22—2:3 (NIV) 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.

2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

READ 1 PETER 1:22-25

According to Peter, our new birth in Christ (1:3-12) gives rise to a new life of holiness (1:13-21), which leads to a new way of relating to others (1:22—2:3). How would you summarise this new way of relating to others?

Throughout 1st Peter, the concept of obedience and disobedience relates to either believing or rejecting the gospel, the good news of salvation in Christ (4:17; see also 1:2; 2:8; 3:1, 19-20). In light of this, what does it mean to be “purified… by obeying the truth” (v.22)?

According to Peter, what will be the practical outcome of believing the gospel (v.22b)? What might this look like practically? What are some ways that you can cultivate a heart of love towards others? Those in your family? In your Growth Group? In our wider church family?

Page 26: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

26

After calling us to love one another deeply (v.22), Peter immediately turns to the “word of God”, the message of God’s love for us in Christ (v.23). Why would he do this?

For reflection: “Because God’s love is the source of ours, the message of his love is what kindles ours. Christian love may be demonstrated by a hug, a holy kiss, or a helping hand, but Christian love cannot be transmitted this way. Christian love is born as Christians are born: through the truth of the gospel. That which clears away the “malice… deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander” of the old lifestyle is the cleansing of our souls through obedience to God’s truth.” (Edmund Clowney, p.75)

What two words does Peter use to describe the word of God in verse 23? How does this description deepen and expand your understanding of the value of God’s Word? How could these qualities change your attitude towards the word of God?

READ 1 PETER 2:1-3

According to verse 1, what attitudes and actions are we to rid ourselves of? What do each of them look like practically? Why do they destroy community?

Discuss the following questions related to verse 2:

What does it mean to “grow up in your salvation”? Don’t forget the context.

How do we grow in spiritual maturity?

What is this “pure spiritual milk”? What clues in the context lead you to that answer?

Page 27: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

27

For reflection: “If we don’t crave the pure spiritual milk, it may be that we are taking in so much of the world’s “milk” that we are not hungry for the “milk” God offers. In that case, we need to evaluate everything we are taking into our minds and hearts. Or, it could very well be that we have forgotten that the Lord is good, in which case we need to turn to his pure spiritual milk, so that we can discover his goodness to us all over again.” (Juan Sanchez, p.69)

1 Peter 2:4-10 (NIV)

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

READ 1 PETER 2:4-10

What image does Peter use to describe Christ and Christians in verses 4-5?

What does it mean that the church, the body of believers, is a “spiritual house”? What is the parallel to the Old Testament temple that Peter wants us to understand? Consider how Solomon describes the temple in 1 Kings 8:12-13 (and following) and the excerpt below.

“The long history of God’s dwelling place among his people finds New Testament fulfilment in the people of God themselves. The glory of God, the visible evidence of his presence among his people, had led the people out of Egypt as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Ex.13:21-22). God’s glory had filled the tabernacle under Moses (Ex. 33:8-13; 40:34-38), and had later filled Solomon’s temple (1Ki. 8:10-

11). But it had departed from the temple, in the time of Ezekiel, because of the sins of the people (Ezk. 10:4; 18-19; 11:23). Of the temple built after the return from exile God promised that ‘The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former’ (Hg. 2:9), but his glory had never descended to fill it as it had filled the temple under Solomon. The faithful in Israel then waited over 400 years for the fulfillment of Malachi’s prophecy, ‘The Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple’ (Mal. 3:1). The fulfillment of this prophecy was witnessed by righteous Simeon and Anna when Mary and Joseph bought to the Jerusalem temple infant Jesus (Lk. 2:22-38), the Saviour who was ‘the Messiah, the Lord’ (Lk. 2:11). His Presence was the greater glory of that temple (Lk. 19:47-48).

Page 32: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

32

But he also brought its judgement and word of its destruction (Jn. 2:13-17; Lk. 21:5-

6), for his own body was the greater and more perfect temple of God (Jn. 2:19-21), the one in whom ‘all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell’ (Col. 1:19). Thus, John could say of Jesus’ life, ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt among [literally, ‘tented or tabernacled’] among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father’ (Jn. 1:14). In the New Testament Jesus himself is the new and better temple of God, the dwelling place of God among men.

However, after Pentecost, the dwelling place of God is not only Jesus himself, but also his people. He promises to be ‘in the midst’ of them (Mt. 18:20), to be with them always (Mt. 28.20), and says that he himself, together with the Father and Holy Spirit, will dwell within his people (Jn. 14:17-23). So now in the church age the people of God are the true temples of God, the place where God dwells.

When Christ returns and there are new heavens and a new earth, the temple of God will be the whole earth, for, shining forth from the throne of God in the new Jerusalem, the glory of God will fill the whole earth, and all the nations shall walk by the light of God’s glory (Rev. 21:11-25; 22:5; Ps. 72:29). Then God will be King over all the earth (Zc. 14:9) and the whole earth shall come to worship before God (Is. 66:23). In anticipation of that great culmination of all history, the church even now is given the task of declaring God’s glory among all the nations (1Pet. 1:9; cf. Ps. 96:13; 108:5; Mt. 5:14-16). (Grudem, 102-104)

What are the “spiritual sacrifices” that believers are to make to God? Consider Psalm 51:17; Romans 12:1; 15:15-16 and Hebrews 13:15-16

What kinds of rejection have you faced as a follower of Jesus? How does the truth of verse 4 encourage you and motivate you (that Jesus was “rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him”)? How does it shape your understanding of what it means to follow him? What are some ways that you can fight against the fear of rejection in the next week?

What does it mean that “the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame” (v.6b)?

Page 33: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

In verse 9 Peter gives four different descriptions of who we are as a body of believers. In your own words, what do they each mean? How should they inform the way we view the church?

A chosen people:

A royal priesthood:

A holy nation:

God’s special possession:

What defines us as the people of God according to verse 10? How should this influence the way we relate to God? To one another? To the world?

Verse 9 tells us that we have been chosen, brought together, equipped, and set apart for a purpose: to “declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light”. What are some ways you can do this? As an individual? As a Growth Group? As part of the wider church family?

Thank God for the blessing of knowing His chosen and precious Son and being a part of his chosen and precious people.

1 Peter 2:11-25 (NIV)

11

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 13

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14

or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15

For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16

Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17

Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor. 18

Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19

For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. 20

But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22 “He committed no sin,

and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25

For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

After describing our new birth in Christ (1:3-12), our new life of holiness (1:13-21), our new way of relating to others (1:22—2:3), and our new identity as the chosen people of God (2:4-10), Peter now turns to describe our new mission in the world: to be a winsome witness to the truth of the gospel (2:11-12) by being submissive citizens (2:13-17) and workers (2:18-20), following the example of the Lord Jesus (2:21-25).

What comes to mind when you think of the word ‘submit’?

Why is submitting (being subject to another) a generally repulsive idea in our culture?

How would you respond to the charge that submissiveness is a negative trait?

READ 1 PETER 2:11-12

Peter includes the word “foreigner” (alongside ‘exile’) to describe the relationship of a believer to this present world. What might it look like for a Christian to live as a ‘foreigner’ and ‘exile’ in the world? Consider Luke 12:32-34; 2 Corinthians 5:1, 6-9, 20; and Philippians 3:20-21.

Where does our witness in the world begin according to verse 11? What are the “sinful desires” that wage war against our soul? Consider Romans 7:21-25.

How do you know if a desire or passion is from the flesh or from the Spirit?

What else does our witness involve according to verse 12? What does this mean practically?

READ 1 PETER 2:13-17

In these verses Peter describes a Christian attitude towards “human authority” (government). How would you summarise the attitude Peter describes? What reasons does Peter give for submitting ourselves to human authority (see v.13 and 15)?

Are there any occasions when we would not submit to human authority? Consider the following examples from the life of Jesus, Paul and Peter, and discuss how you would explain their behaviour in each scenario. Are they submissive? Why or why not?

John 18:19-23

Acts 4:18-20

Acts 5:27-29

Acts 23:1-5

What kind of freedom is Peter referring to in verse 16? What has the believer been freed from? What have they been freed to? Consider 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

READ 1 PETER 2:18-25

For further study: After giving instruction about how Christians are to submit to wider society, Peter continues to discuss how Christians are to live as winsome witnesses in their households, directly addressing household slaves, along with wives and husbands (2:18—3:7). In the Roman Empire during the first century, slavery was different to modern examples (e.g., colonial America).

Like Jesus (see Matthew 5:16), Peter speaks of “good deeds” that are noticed by unbelievers. How can you practically let your light shine before others? At work? At school? Among your neighbours? Your family? Your friends?

Have you ever given up a behaviour, pastime, or preference because it could send the wrong message to an unbeliever? Has God been showing you anything that you need to set aside? Ask that He would make you more focused on His glory than your own desires or comfort.

What’s is one “sinful desire” you need help to fight against this week? Or what is something competing with God for your affection and allegiance right now? Consider praying for these things together as a group.

Slaves were often well-educated and served as physicians or tutors to the children. And though it was difficult, slaves had the opportunity to buy their freedom. Peter does not address slaves to affirm the practice of slavery, but rather to regulate an existing social structure and to highlight the importance of maintaining a faithful gospel witness within the structures of that society. In fact, by directly addressing slaves, Peter was elevating them to a place of dignity, remembering that because of Christ, there is no longer any distinction between slave and free; they are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:28).

How could the submission of slaves—even to unjust masters—be a powerful example of God’s grace? How could we apply this principle to our lives today? How could it be misapplied?

Peter refers to suffering for doing good (v.20b), and then says “To this you were called…” (v.21). What is your reaction to this reality? What reason is given for this calling (v.21b)?

How can Christ’s example help you when you are mistreated (v.21-23)? Beyond his example, what benefits has Christ’s suffering produced (v.24-25)?

1 Peter 3:1-7 (NIV)

1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behaviour of their wives, 2

when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God

used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives,

and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

READ 1 PETER 3:1-6

After calling Christians to be winsome witnesses to the gospel by submitting to human authority (2:13-17), Peter now calls Christians to live as winsome witnesses in their households, directly addressing household slaves (2:18-25) and husbands and wives (3:1-7).

What is the first word in verse 1? Why is this significant for what is to follow?

What are some stereotypical ideas of the submissive wife? What is your own perception of what it means and does not mean for a wife to be submissive? Don’t worry about the ‘right’ answer, just be honest.

What is the ultimate aim of wives submitting to their husband (v.1-2)?

What wisdom does verses 1-2 offer to wives of unbelievers in? To wives of believers? To unmarried women? Can you think of any examples how this principle might be misapplied?

Page 44: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

44

For reflection: “Christian women submit to their husbands, and particularly to non-

Christian husbands, not because they are in some way inferior, for they are God’s elect. Rather, they submit for the Lord’s sake, with the particular purpose of winning their husbands to the Lord by their unselfish example. The key expression, in the same way, is applied to the husband as well as the wife (3:7). Both follow Jesus, the suffering Servant. Although the husband does not fulfil the same role in relation to his wife as his wife does to him, there is a fundamental identity of attitude: both are servants of God, seeking to serve others for Christ’s sake.” (Clowney, p.128)

What is Peter’s point in verses 3-4? What is he not saying? What significant word does Peter use to describe the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit (v.4)? What contrast is Peter making between physical beauty and spiritual beauty? What practices or disciplines can you adopt to enhance your spiritual beauty?

READ 1 PETER 3:7

How are husbands commanded to live with their wives? Explain what you think Peter means.

Looking closer (v.7): “While Peter’s words to Christian husbands are brief, they were subversive in first-century society. Rather than lording it over his wife, a husband must be “considerate”, living with her in reverent fear of God (2:17-18). This entails treating her with respect and acknowledging her as a spiritual equal.” (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2544)

What two reasons does Peter give for husbands to treat their wives respectfully? Why is his reference to their wives being “weaker” not intended to be condescending?

Pray Always Devoting ourselves to prayer

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

If you are married, what do you need to start doing or stop doing so that your marriage can serve as a witness to Christ in your circles and in our culture?

Looking closer (v.7): “weaker partner” – This refers primarily to a woman’s physical weakness relative to a man’s strength, not her moral character or mental capacity. (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2544)

How should the truth that their wives are “heirs with you of the gracious gift of life” instruct a husband? How should it affect his thoughts, words, and actions?

What is the consequence of a Christian husband mistreating his wife? Why is this so significant? What does this tell us about God?

How can we be a church that encourages our men to honour their wives according to this standard and benchmark?

Pray for the marriages in our church, for those who long to be married, and for those who are unmarried in order to better serve Christ.

1 Peter 3:8-22 (NIV)

8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be

compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10

For,

“Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. 11

They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it. 12

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be

prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16

keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17

For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19

After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits—20

to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21

and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22

who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

READ 1 PETER 3:8-12

In these verses Peter summarises the attitude and lifestyle a Christian is to adopt in a secular and hostile society. In verse 8 he names five characteristics of this lifestyle. What are they? What might each of them look like practically?

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Which of these do you find most difficult? Which is easiest? Why?

When are you tempted to return evil for evil? Why is it so tempting to “get even” with someone who wrongs you? What does this say about what we believe about God?

What does it mean to “repay evil with a blessing”? What might this look like practically? Why does Peter describe it as a calling (“to this you were called”)?

READ 1 PETER 3:13-17

What specific kind of suffering is Peter addressing in these verses? What assurance does he give to his audience?

Can you think of an example when doing good might keep you from being persecuted? Can you think of an example when it might cause you to be persecuted?

For further study: How is Peter’s teaching in verse 14 consistent with Jesus’ teaching? Consider Matthew 5:10-12 and John 12:24-26. Can you think of any other passages?

What does it mean to “revere Christ as Lord” in your heart? How is this linked to enduring persecution as a Christian?

What would cause an unbeliever to notice that you have “hope” (v.15)? Has this ever happened to you?

Take turns at answering the implied question of verse 15: “What is the reason for the hope that you have?” What steps can you take to be prepared to answer this question?

Why does Peter add the qualifier at the end of verse 15: “But do this with gentleness and respect”? Is this our usual demeanour when answering objections and questions about our faith? Why are gentleness and respect so important to the defence of our faith? Consider Colossians 4:5-6 and 2 Timothy 2:24-26

Page 51: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

Pray Always Devoting ourselves to prayer

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

When was the last time you had the opportunity to talk about your faith with an unbeliever? How did you feel about it? What was good? What wasn’t so good? Discuss how you can be gentle and respectful when giving a defence of your hope in Christ.

READ 1 PETER 3:18-22

Verses 19-22 are notoriously difficult to understand. What do you think they mean? Think back to the story of Noah and the ark in Genesis 6:9—9:17 (if you need to, take the time to read it). What parallels to baptism do you see?

What does baptism symbolise? Consider Romans 6:4 and Colossians 2:12

What does your baptism mean to you?

What does Peter mean when he says baptism saves us (v.21)? What does he not mean? Why?

Looking closer (v.21): “Baptism saves only in the sense that it represents what Christ has achieved. The waters of the Noahic flood symbolise baptism, and baptism is the sign and seal of salvation ‘by the resurrection of Jesus Christ’.” (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2545)

How does the resurrection and ascension of Jesus into heaven from where he reigns and rules over all things change the way we view our sufferings and our hopes (v.21-

22)?

Ask that God will use your life and your love to open doors for you to share the hope that you have in Jesus.

1 Peter 4:1-11 (NIV)

1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living

and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that

you may pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11

If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

READ 1 PETER 4:1-6

What does it mean to arm yourself with the same attitude that Jesus had during his suffering in the body (v.1)? How can we do this? What will the result be of such a mindset (v.2)?

Looking closer (v.1): “The only way Christians can live victoriously in society is to arm themselves “with the same attitude” as Christ, who resolved to obey God rather than sin—even if it meant suffering, “because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin”. Peter’s readers face the choice of either taking the path of least resistance (going along with the values, norms, and practices their society accepts and expects) or obeying God and suffering ostracism and judgement from unbelieving family and friends who criticize and condemn them (v.4). Willingly suffering in this way, even as Christ suffered rejection, demonstrates that the believer has resolved to be done with sin.” (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2546)

How will some people respond to you when you live in obedience to Jesus (v.4)? Why do people respond in this way? Have you ever experienced either of these responses?

Page 56: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

56

In light of verses 3–6, what is the balance between separating from the world and yet being in the world and on mission for Jesus? How does this play out specifically in your life?

Looking closer (v.6): “From the perspective of a sceptic, Christianity seems empty. What advantage is there to believing in Christ if Christians suffer more in this life, and still end this life by dying, just like everyone else? But, Peter argues, though Christians die—they are “judged according to human standards in regard to the body”—they will “live according to God in regard to the spirit”. As we (see) in 3:18, “live in the Spirit” means the resurrection to the realm of the Spirit in a spiritual, incorruptible body. Peter is simply saying that the gospel preached to us and believed by us gives us hope beyond the now. It is not empty because it brings us fullness of life eternally, beyond the grave.” (Juan Sanchez, p.144)

READ 1 PETER 4:7-11

“The end of all things is near” (v.7). Why is this still true today (as it was when Peter wrote)? Do you live with this perspective in mind? Why or why not? Why can it be difficult?

What does it mean to be “alert and sober minded”? How does this help us to live as a follower of Jesus? How does it lead us to pray?

What is the difference between showing hospitality and entertaining friends or guests (v.9)? Why might showing hospitality cause us to grumble?

Pray Always

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

What gifts do you think God has given you? How are you using your gifts to serve others?

How do you see other people using their gifts for the glory of God?

In what way could we encourage and support one another in using our gifts for God?

Ask God to help you live with the end in mind so you may develop an alert and sober mind, a servant heart, and a strength that only God can give.

Above all, we are to “love each other deeply” (v.8). What might this look like practically? Consider the rest of the passage. How does love cover over a “multitude of sins” (v.8)?

According to verse 10, why does God give us gifts? What do we sometimes wrongly believe about the purpose of gifts from God? How have you grown in your relationship with God through other people using their gifts generously?

1 Peter 4:12-19 (NIV)

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you

to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But

rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14

If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15

If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16

However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17

For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18

And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19

So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

READ 1 PETER 4:12-19

What kind of suffering is in view in these verses (v.14, 16)?

What false assumption does Peter set straight in verse 12? Why do we make this assumption? What can be the outcome if this assumption is left uncorrected?

Have you ever experienced loss, insult, exclusion, or persecution specifically because of your faith in Jesus? How did you respond? What helped you to endure it and persevere through it?

What are some incorrect or harmful ways we respond when we suffer for being a Christian? How does Peter want us to respond (v.13, 16)? Why can we respond in this way?

Page 62: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

62

What does verse 14 mean (that “the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you”)? Consider Matthew 10:17-20; John 14:16-18, 26; Romans 8:26; and 2 Corinthians 3:5-

18

What is Peter’s point in verse 15?

Looking closer (v.15): “There is suffering that comes from following Christ and suffering that comes from one’s own bad behaviour. There is no honour or glory in suffering because one has committed evil, even if that evil is simply being inappropriately involved in another’s business (‘a meddler’). Being a Christian never gives a person license to do evil (3:10-12). There is no right way to do the wrong thing.” (NIV Zondervan Study Bible, p.2547)

Why might we be ashamed to suffer for Christ (v.16)?

What is Peter’s point in verses 17-18 regarding the judgement of the believer and the unbeliever? Consider Proverbs 11:31 and 1 Corinthians 11:32. How does Peter want us to be challenged and encouraged by contemplating the final judgement?

Page 63: Sermon Based 9 7 - Bray Park Community Church · 2019-07-18 · Gospel Coalition) by Jen Wilkin 1, 2 Peter, & Jude (New American Commentary Series) by Thomas Schreiner 1 & 2 Peter

Pray Always Devoting ourselves to prayer

Serve Others Valuing people outside the group and outside the faith

How should we pray for believers who are suffering for their faith in Christ?

Give thanks to God for the blessing of being insulted because of the name of Christ and ask for the strength to respond by continuing to do good.

Looking closer (v.17): The point of suffering for Christ is “… to purify his church by exposing false believers within the church. Suffering will both reveal his people as he brings them through it, and expose those who are not his people as they fail to trust Christ in it. The sheep and the goats (Matt. 25:31-46) are revealed in suffering now, as they will be revealed in final judgement later. We are now in the last days. The end is near. And in this sense, final judgement is already underway in the church through Christian suffering.” (Juan Sanchez, p.169)

When suffering comes, how can you practically commit yourself to your “faithful Creator and continue to do good” (v.19)? What do you need to remember or what do you need to do?

1 Peter 5:1-14 (NIV)

1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders.

All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.”

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift

you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a

roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11

To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. 12

With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. 13

She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14

Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
