His vision was to create a pioneering hospital dedicated to excellence in the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with cancer.

We have built on William Marsden’s legacy and are constantly raising standards and finding better ways to improve the lives of our patients.

Today we are an NHS Foundation Trust with hospitals in Chelsea and Sutton and a Chemotherapy Suite in Kingston.

Together with The Institute of Cancer Research, we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and through this partnership

The Royal Marsden has around 2,300 staff working in Chelsea and Sutton.

Whoever the individual may be and whatever their role, each and every member of staff at The Royal Marsden is united in their goal to improve the outcomes for people with cancer.

We work with our patients to ensure that they receive the best clinical treatment - and that their care is personal and sensitive to their individual needs.

Team work is essential in maintaining our high standards of performance and nowhere was this more evident than in the outstanding professionalism staff showed in response to the fire on our Chelsea site in January.

Staff equality In 2007, the Equality and Diversity Committee conducted its annual review of the work of the Race, Disability and Gender Equality Schemes and agreed a Race Equality Scheme for 2008–2010.

The Trust successfully ran a number of involvement projects and relationships with organisations such as Cancer Black Care were also strengthened.

The Royal Marsden strives to maintain the highest possible standards and we are constantly working to exceed the expectations of both our patients and the public.

Importantly for us, our patients rated us highly in two key surveys. We were rated top in the country for treating patients with dignity and respect and nearly all the patients who completed the Healthcare Commission’s Annual Inpatient Survey felt they received excellent or very good treatment at The Royal Marsden.

Healthcare Commission Health CheckFor the second year running The Royal Marsden was awarded an ‘excellent’ for both its quality of services and use of resources in the Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check.

The Royal Marsden is the only Trust in the country to have managed the top score twice in a row and it puts us in the top 14% of Trusts across the country for use of resources and in the top 16% for quality of services.

The Healthcare Commission said: “The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust performed well beyond the minimum requirements and the reasonable expectations for this assessment”.

Performance targetsThe Trust has a range of indicators it uses to monitor its performance against national and local targets. It reports regularly to the Department of Health and other healthcare assessment bodies.

Better awareness

The fire in 2008 focused the world’s attention on The Royal Marsden. However, for the vast majority of people the increased awareness as a result of the fire will become a distant memory. We need to work hard to raise awareness and be known for the amazing work we do.

The reason we need to do this is to encourage more patients to choose us for their treatment.

Many people who live near our hospitals don’t realise that they can come to us for specialised care or for a second option. Others who live outside the local community assume that they can only go to a local hospital, so don’t even consider choosing us.

This shouldn’t be the case. Patients can now choose where they are treated. So we need to make them aware that they can choose us.

For this reason, it’s important to make sure that local communities and the general public know about all the great work we do; and that they have a choice.

If patients only knew that they could choose us, we think they would.

Also, GPs need to consider The Royal Marsden as the first choice when referring patients.

GPs are often unaware of our wide range of diagnostic and treatment services. They might refer a patient with breast cancer to us – but not a patient with a different type of cancer.

To remedy this, we are creating a GP awareness programme together with a GP information and referral guide that promotes our full range of services. We really want The Royal Marsden to be a GP’s first choice for patient referrals.

In the UK, one in three people are affected by cancer. One in four people will die from the disease.

At The Royal Marsden, we are committed to reducing these figures in every way we can.

We are already doing an extraordinary job. Remember how we coped when the fire devastated our roof earlier this year? We all pulled together to resume treatment for our patients in record time.

With this unique sense of purpose and co-operation it’s no wonder that we’re recognised as the centre of excellence for cancer, research, care and treatment in the UK.

However, it’s not in our nature to be complacent.

The Royal Marsden is dedicated to continually raising standards and finding better ways to improve the lives of our patients. We are always seeking to adopt new methods that will make us even more effective in our fight against cancer.
