happy with them.

If they are sad, share their sorrow. Work happily together. Don’t try to

much as possible.

Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for

he has said that he will repay those who deserve it . . . Instead,

feed your enemy if he is hungry.

If he is thirsty give him something to drink and you will be “heaping

coals of fire on his head.” In other

words, he will feel ashamed of himself for

what he has done to you.

Instead, offer only fresh words that build others up when they need it most. That way your good words will communicate grace to those

I give up my right to always have my own way

Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never

boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish

or rude. Love does not demand its own way . . . let’s keep each step in perfect sync with God’s Spirit.

This will happen when we set aside our self-interests and work

together to create true community instead of a culture consumed by

I give up my right to think I am superior

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves . . . Do

not pay attention to what humans value. Humans only care about the

external appearance,

but the Lord considers what’s on the inside . . .We’re not putting

ourselves in a league with those who boast

that they’re our superiors. We wouldn’t dare do that . . . all this

comparing, grading and competing miss the point.

I give up my right to refuse to love & pray

You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its

unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies.

Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst.

When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working

out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God

does. He gives his best—

the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and

nasty. If all you do is love the lovable,

do you expect a bonus? (Matthew 5:44 – The Message)
