International Trade Fair “Organics and Millets 2019” at Bengaluru The Organics and Millets 2019, International Trade Fair was held in Bengaluru from Jan 18‐20, 2019 at the Palace Grounds. This second edition of International trade fair was organized to showcase the potential and opportunities existing in organic products and millets not only in Karnataka but across India as well. The trade fair was formally
inaugurated by the ceremo‐nial lighting of lamp by the dignitaries including the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka Sh. HD Kumaras‐wamy, in the presence of Hon`ble minister for Agricul‐ture, Government of Karna‐taka, Sh. Shivsankar Reddy and other Central and state agriculture department Offi‐cials. The emphasis was to create market linkages be‐tween producers and mar‐keters with the ultimate aim of significantly improving farmers’ income from or‐
ganic farming and from growing millets in less‐endowed regions, with less irrigation and without any chemical in‐puts. ITF‐2019 had over 270 exhibitors, many B2B meetings were organized and over 1,50,000 visitors attended the event in three days. This event was organized by the Dept. of Agriculture, Govt. of Karnataka, in collaboration with KAPPEC as the Nodal agency, International Competence Centre of Organic Agriculture (ICCOA, and ICAR ‐ Indian institute of Millets Research and ICRISAT as knowledge and Research Partners.
International conference on "Enhancing Farmers' Income through Millets Promotion"
International Conference on “"Enhancing Farmers' Income through Millets Promotion" was con‐ducted by ICAR‐Indian In‐stitute of Millets Research on the side lines of Inter‐national Trade Fair on Or‐ganics and Millets at Pal‐ace Grounds, Bengaluru during 18‐20 January, 2019. This conference was organized in the ITF arena where Shri VS Sunil Kumar, Hon'ble Agricul‐ture Minister, Govern‐ment of Kerala, Trivan‐drum was the Chief Guest and Dr. Dr AK Singh, DDG (crop sciences), ICAR, Delhi, was the Guest of Honour. The

other dignitaries who participated in the deliberations in various sessions were: Dr SK Malhotra, Agricultural
Commissioner, GoI, New Delhi, Dr Vasudevappa, VC, NIFTEM, Dr Ashok Dalwai, CEO, NRAA, New Delhi, Dr Peter Carberry, DG, ICRISAT, Dr Sanjeev Saxena, ADG (IPTM), ICAR, Mrs. Joana ‐Kane Potaka, ADG, Communi‐cation, ICRISAT, Hyderabad, Dr KSMS Raghava Rao, Di‐rector, CFTRI, besides Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR and Dr B Dayakar Rao, PS, IIMR.
The conference was an exclusive meeting place of millet stakeholders from diverse sectors constituting farmers, traders, exporters, researchers, NGOs, Central and State Governments all the, policy makers, government and non‐government dignitaries, leading domestic and inter‐national speakers from India and abroad where discus‐sions, networking and interpersonal meetings were made. One MoU was signed during this conference with M/s.360 Super Foods, Hyderabad. About 25 speakers delivered the lectures in five sessions. Various commit‐tees and teams from IIMR made all arrangements for this conference. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director IIMR was the convenor of this conference. Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist, served as the Organising Secretary and Dr. KBRS Visarada, Principal Scientist, as moderator from IIMR, Hyderabad. Drs. Avinash Singode, Harip‐rasanna K, Amasidda, Sooganna participated in the con‐ference and also acted as rapporteurs, and the event activities were facilitated by Dr. KV Raghavendra Rao, Smt. Vishala Devender, Sh. HS Gawali and all the team of CoE and Nutrihub. The detailed proceedings of the meet are being prepared and will be posted in our web‐site.
Quinquennial Review Team Meeting at Solapur
The Quinquennial Review Team (QRT reviewed the pro‐gress of Rabi sorghum programme at AICRP‐Sorghum Centres at an interface meeting organized at National Research centre for Pomegranate (NRC‐P) at Solapur on 21 January, 2019 under the Chairmanship of Dr. KS Khokhar, Former Vice‐Chancellor, (CCSHAU‐Hisar). Other members of the QRT namely Drs. Dr Channabyre Gowda, Ex‐Project Coordinator‐Small Millets ‐ Ben‐
galuru; Dr. JV Patil, Former Director, IIMR, Hyderabad, Dr. OP Govila, Member, Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR and Dr. HS Talwar, Principal scientist & Member‐Secretary besides Dr. Jyotsana Sharma, Director, NRC‐P. The AICRP‐PIs and Principal Scientists Drs. SS Rao, IK Das, R Madhusudhana and Dr. R Swarna, Scientist from IIMR‐Hyderabad also participated in the deliberations. On the other hand, In‐charges of AICRP sorghum cen‐tre’s presented progress made under rabi programme at their respective centres during 2013‐18, and projected the plan of action for sorghum and other millets re‐search and development. The QRT Team proposed some recommendations which are being finalized and published in the proceedings.
Training Program on “Start-up Ignition: Entre-preneurship Opportunities in Millets”
Nutrihub, ICAR‐IIMR organized an event “Start‐up Igni‐tion: Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Millets” at ICAR‐
IIMR on 5 January, 2018. To create awareness about the importance of millets, providing training on Start‐ups, Entrepreneurship Opportunities and business opportu‐nities in millets sector. A group of 24 participants en‐compassing farmers, housewives, doctors, millets entre‐preneur aspirants and start‐ups attended the pro‐gramme. In the beginning, Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, wel‐comed the dignitaries and participants, he also gave overview of program. Later Visit to Centre of Excellence & Millets Technologies was organized by Mr. B. Srinivas, Incubation Manager, Nutrihub. Program concluded with Millet Value added products Kits being distributed to

the participants.
Launching of ICAR-BMGF funded mega project on modernization of breeding platforms
ICAR in collaboration with Bill and Melinda Gates Foun‐dation (BMGF) has initiated a mega‐project on
“Application of next generation breeding, genotyping and digitization approaches for improving the genetic gain in Indian staple crops”. The project aims to opti‐mize breeding pipelines towards development of con‐sumer oriented products while improving climate resil‐ience, crop productivity and profitability of Indian farm‐ers in four‐year period. Launching the project on 25 January, 2019 at New Delhi, the Director General of ICAR and the Secretary, Department of Agricultural Re‐search and Education, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra in‐formed that the project will help in digitalization of plant breeding activities, deploying next‐ generation breeding approaches and contemporary genomic tools for enhancing genetic gain and development of new va‐rieties rapidly. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Purvi Me‐hta, Senior Advisor and Head of Agriculture for Asia, BMGF welcomed the ICAR partnership and assured all possible support of BMGF in this initiative.
ICAR – Indian Institute of Millets Research is the proud partner of this mega project where pearl millet and sor‐ghum breeding programmes have been selected for im‐plementing breeding management tools, digitising the phenotyping and employing contemporary genomics approaches. Dr. Vilas Tonapi, Director, ICAR‐Indian Insti‐tute of Millets Research, Hyderabad attended the inau‐gural function and participated in the deliberation. Dr. T Nepolean, who is the Principal Investigator for the Ge‐nomics Component of the project explained the ways to accelerate the genetic gain in crop improvement pro‐grammes in his talk during the inaugural function.
Sorghum Germplasm Field Day
ICAR‐IIMR organized Sorghum Germplasm Field Day un‐der the Consortium Research Platform on Agro‐
Biodiversity on 30 January 2019. Inaugurating the pro‐gramme Chief Guest Dr. Channabyre Gowda, Former Project Coordinator (Small Millets) emphasized the inte‐
grated objectives for both ICAR‐IIMR and AICRP on Sor‐ghum and interlinking of phenotypic and genotypic data to strengthen the selection process. Guest of Honour, Dr JV Patil, Former Director, ICAR‐IIMR appealed to breed‐ers to diversify the genetic base in the crop improve‐ment programme. The Guest of Honour Dr. Sivaraj of ICAR‐NBPGR appreciated the efforts of ICAR‐IIMR in or‐ganizing series of germplasm field days to initiate the utilization of available genetic resources. Dr Sushil Pandey of ICAR‐NBPGR coordinator of consortium ex‐pressed his satisfaction on the progress of millet genetic resources programme at ICAR‐IIMR under CRP‐AB. He has requested all to register value added unique genetic stocks with ICAR‐NBPGR. Dr Vilas Tonapi, Director, ICAR‐IIMR in his remarks stressed on better performance by centres to meet the global objectives of the coordinated programme. He also requested ICAR‐NBPGR to augment all the FAO Trust millets germplasm from ICRISAT for utilization in the crop improvement. Dr M Elangovan briefed the participants about achievements of the Mil‐let Genetic Resources Management at ICAR‐IIMR in the past 18 years and finally Dr Amasiddha proposed the vote of thanks.
Sorghum is one of the important crops under compo‐nent I in this project and hence, it’s Characterization, Regeneration, Distribution and Documentation is being implemented successfully at IIMR – Hyderabad. The field day was attended by 65 participants (25 from 15 AICRP on Sorghum, 3 from ICAR‐NBPGR, 2 from ICRISAT,
Millets Newsletter No. 183; January, 2019 Page 4 of 8
1 from BARC‐Trombay and 33 from ICAR‐IIMR). In the field day during rabi 2018‐19, a total of 4313 acc. were displayed. The selection of sorghum germplasm was done through digital field book mobile app. A Total of 450 accessions were selected by the participants from AICRP on Sorghum. The field day was coordinated by Dr. M. Elangovan, Dr. B. Amasiddha and Smt. A Annapurna.
Training Program on “Entrepreneurship develop-ment on Millets” Nutrihub, ICAR‐IIMR organized an event “Entrepreneurship development on millet value added products and marketing” at ICAR‐IIMR on 31 January – 1 February, 2019. To create awareness about the impor‐tance of millets, providing training on Start‐ups’, Entre‐
preneurship and business opportunities in millets sec‐tor. A group of 18 farmers from Vellore district of Tamil Nadu joined in this program. In the beginning, Dr. San‐gappa, Scientist gave overview of program and later vis‐ited to Centre of Excellence & Millets Technologies. This two days training program involved both theory and practical demonstration of primary processing machin‐ery, and value added technologies. This program con‐cluded with distribution of certificates.
Awards
Outstanding Scientist Award to Dr. Aruna
Dr. C Aruna, PS, IIMR received the Out‐standing Scientist National Award under SIRIDHANYA: Millets Awards 2019 at the International Trade Fair on Organics and Millets – held at Palace Grounds, Bengaluru on 20 January, 2019. She was honoured for her contributions towards the development of hybrid technologies in sorghum and breeding of end‐use spe‐cific cultivars amenable for better processing and value addition.
Congratulations to Dr. Aruna for this award and IIMR family wishes many more laurels in future.
ITMC Meeting
A meeting of “Institute Technology Management Com‐mittee (ITMC) was organized at ICAR‐Indian institute of
Millets Research (IIMR) on 07 January, 2019. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director IIMR was the Chairman. Dr. B Dayakar
Rao, Principal Scientist, IIMR in his welcome address presented the overview and action taken on issues dis‐cussed in last meeting. Various agenda items were dis‐cussed. In this meeting, Dr SK Soam, Principal Scientist – IPR Expert, NAARM, Dr IK Das, Principal Scientist and Member Secretary–IRC, Dr HS Talwar, Principal Scientist and In‐charge, PME Cell, Drs. B Dayakar Rao, and C Aruna, Nodal Officer‐IPR issues, special Invitee and Sh. Charles Ekka, SAO, and Sri AN Murthy, FAO participated. The forum discussed on Revision of royalties and other issues related to NIELAN project. Dr B Dayakar Rao, Nodal Officer IPTM facilitated this meeting.
National Workshops on Digital Field Book
At ICAR-IIOR-Hyderabad: ICAR‐IIMR organized National Workshop on Digital Field Book at ICAR‐Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR), Hyderabad to create aware‐ness on mobile data collection using the Digital Field Book on 19 January 2019. A Total of 56 participants at‐
tended the workshop. Lecture on Digital Field Book, Hands on demonstration with examples from Sunflower was given to the participants. Trait files of Sunflower, Safflower, Castor, Sesame and Rapeseed were made and given to them as a ready to use framework for data collection in the field. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Ranganatha, Project Coordinator (Rapeseed) and coordinated by Drs M Elangovan and Chunduri Sarada.
At Akshay Seeds Pvt Ltd: ICAR‐IIMR‐Hyderabad organized training cum demonstration on Digital Field Book at Ak‐shay Seeds Pvt Ltd under the consultancy programme. The training module included lecture followed by hand‐on training on digital field book. Field book and Trait files were created for Bitter guard and Bottle guard dur‐ing the demonstration. There were 15 participants en‐compassing Breeders, Managers and Technical officers of the company. Participants expressed their satisfac‐tion and understood the importance of using app to col‐lect digital data in the field and lab.
Republic day celebrated
The Nation’s 69th Republic Day was celebrated with pa‐triotism, enthusiasm and unity at Indian Institute of Mil‐lets Research on 26 January, 2019. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi.

Director, IIMR unfurled the national flag and addressed the staff. On this occasion, Dr. Tonapi announced that
Government of India has declared this year as “Year of Millets” and expressed the need of rededication to meet the challenges of food and nutritional security. He also highlighted the sacrifices of martyrs and said that we should imbibe the tenants of hard work and contribute to the national building . The children of IIMR staff also actively participated in the celebrations, sung patriotic songs performed in cultural programmes. Dr. Elangovan, Principal Scientist was the moderator and Sh. Vilas Aghav, Farm Superintendent and his team were the co‐ordinators of the event.
Exhibition stalls
Millets stall at International Trade Fair on Organ-ics and Millets – Bengaluru
ICAR – Indian Institute of Millets Research participated in International Trade Fair on Organics and Millets – held at Palace Grounds, Bengaluru during 18‐20 January,
2019 and showcased millet health food products and technologies. More than 15000 people including farm‐ers, delegates, visitors, dignitaries from Karnataka and other states, Students, and entrepreneurs visited IIMR stall and appreciated the efforts made by the institute in creation of the demand and promotion of millets. In this three‐days event, about 50 genuine enquiries were re‐ceived from young entrepreneurs concerning processing
and production of millet health foods. Mr. P Amarnath Reddy, Mr. B Srinivas, Mr. M Srinu, Mr. Shyam, Mr. Soumya Purohit, Mr. Trivikram, G Shiva Goud, E Sai Prashant, B Madhusudhan, Mr. Vinod, Ms. Vijaya Lak‐shmi, Ms. Padma and other staff of Nutrihub of IIMR showcased the value added millet products and briefed the IIMR activities under the Research and Development in Value addition.
Millet Stall at International Kite Festival 2019-Belgaum.
ICAR– IIMR organised a millet stall during “International Kite Festival 2019” at Belgaum, Karnataka, on 19‐22 January, 2019. Shri. Abhay Patil MLA Belgaum hosted this event and Shri. Adesh Kumar Gupta, Mayor, New Delhi inaugurated the International Kite Festival. More
than 3000 members visited the ICAR‐IIMR stall. The visi‐tors showed keen interest especially in the innovative food products developed from sorghum and other mil‐lets. The importance of millets as health and nutritious food was explained to the visitors and relevant litera‐ture was distributed. Dr. Sangappa and his team coordi‐nated the IIMR stall activities.
Cyclothon and Carnival at Gachibowli Stadium
Hyderabad Bicycle (HBC) hosted Cyclothon and Carnival event, on 27 January, 2019 at Gachibowli Stadium, Hy‐derabad. Distances to be covered in the event were
100 km, 50 km, 25 km, 10 km and 05 km, thus catering to both new and experienced bicycle riders. There were

1100 participants registered from Hyderabad rid‐ers which included around 200 children. ICAR ‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) also supported this event. This being the National Year of Millets, the bicy‐cle ride is being promoted as the "Millet Edition". Con‐tinuing with the tradition of promoting healthy choices, riders were provided with nutritious millet based Cookies and breakfast at the end of the ride.
Invited lecture
Dr M Elangovan acted as the Co‐Chairman during the Technical Session of the One‐day Workshop on Public‐Private/Farmer Interface cum Awareness Programme under Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Authority on 21 January 2019. He has delivered the lec‐ture on DUS Test Guidelines and Licensing for Commer‐cialization of Protected Plant Varieties. He also inter‐acted with the Scientists of various issues related to the licensing of registered varieties and suggested them to follow the IPR guidelines of the ICAR. During the discus‐sion, he has motivated the famers to register their trait‐specific local varieties with the PPV&FRA and claim their right over the registered varieties used in any breeding programmes by public/private sectors.

Dr. Parashuram Patroti, Scientist (Plant Breeding), CRS (ICAR‐IIMR), Solapur delivered the lead lecture on “Biotechnology for 21 Century: Scope and opportunities in Crop improvement” in National Level Conference on “Contemporary Research in Life Sciences and Cancer Biology” organized by Department of Biotechnology of V. G. Shivdare College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Solapur on 19th January 2019.

Dr. Parashuram Patroti, Scientist (Plant Breeding), CRS (ICAR‐IIMR), Solapur was invited as Guest of honour to chair valedictory function of National Level Conference
on “Contemporary Research in Life Sciences and Cancer Biology” organized by Department of Biotechnology of V. G. Shivdare College of Arts, Commerce and Science,
Solapur on 19 January 2019. He distributed certificates to the winners of poster and oral presentations during the valedictory function.
Visitors Dignitaries Dr Alaga Sundaram, DDG (Engg), ICAR, New Delhi vis‐ited the IIMR on 05 January, 2019. He was explained the
ongoing research activities and could visit all facilities at IIMR. He also interacted with the scientists. Later, he visited Centre on Excellence, Technology Business Incu‐bator and other millet processing facilities. and TBI staff of CoE lab. He was very much impressed with the millet processing technologies and value chain developed by IIMR. Farmers from Tamil Nadu
The farmers from various districts of Tamil Nadu visited IIMR on the following dates under ATMA project:
Pudhukottai: A group of 13 Farmers visited ICAR‐IIMR on 8 January, 2018 from Pudhukottai district.
Kanyakumari: A group of 15 Farmers visited ICAR‐IIMR on 24 January, 2018 from Kanyakumari district under ATMA project.
Erode: A group of 20 Farmers visited ICAR‐IIMR on 29 January, 2019 from Erode district under ATMA project.

Vellore: Eighteen farmers from Vellore district of Tamil Nadu visited IIMR during their Inter‐State Farmers Training on Value addition and Marketing in Millets. Dr. M Elangovan facilitated the famers with lecture on Mil‐lets production technology, visit to the millets field in the GTC and Rabi plots and visit the Millets Gene bank on 31 January 2019. The programme was coordinated by Drs. Sangappa and M Elangovan. Students UAS Dharwad University, Karnataka: A group of 70 B.sc Ag, IV year students visited ICAR‐IIMR on 24th January,
2019 from UAS, Dharward, Mr. Srinivas, Incubation Manager, briefed the activities carried out at Nutrihub, Primary Processing unit and food processing labs.
