Dr. Vilas Tonapi - the New Director of IIMR

Dr.  Vilas  A  Tonapi,  Principal  Scientist,  Seed Technology,  IIMR‐Hyderabad  has  taken  over the  charge  as  “Director”,    Indian  Institute  of  Millets Research on 10 February, 2016 as per the  ICAR  office  order  based  on  ASRB recommendation.  Henceforth,  all  the  official communications related to IIMR and AICRP on

The  IIMR  and  AICRP  on  Sorghum  family welcomes  our  new director Dr. Vilas Tonapi. The sorghum family wishes him the best  in  all  his  endeavors  and  hopes  to  achieve  new  heights with renewed vigour and vision.  

One Day Industry Interface Meet  

One Day Industry Interface Meet on “Showcasing Value‐added technologies of Millets” was organized at IIMR, Hyderabad on 

20  February,  2016  to  enhance  utilization  of  nutri‐cereals through private sector     participation  in commercialization of value added food product technologies of Millets.   Smt. Usha Rani, DG, MANAGE was  the Chief Guest  for  this programme.

This meet on millets discussed most pertinent issues to chalk out  the  road‐map  to  make  millets  highly  sustainable  and profitable  through  innovative  value  chain  programmes  by involving  the  private  sector  participation  in commercialization of nutri‐cereals in India.   

This  programme  was  organized  by  ICAR‐Indian  Institute  of Millets  Research  (IIMR),  Hyderabad,  under  the  auspices  of the  DAC, Ministry  of  Agriculture  New  Delhi.  Dr.  B  Dayakar Rao,  PI,  CoE  –Sorghum  coordinated  this  programme.  This event was  successfully  conducted with  the  help  of  various committees  at  IIMR,  Hyderabad.  The  event  was  widely covered by the print and electronic media.  Millets Exhibition An  exhibition  on Millets,  facilitating  to  display  various  agro based  food  processing  technologies  developed  by  public sector,  private  sector  and  NGOs  was  organized  at  Indian 

Institute  of  Millets  Research  during  the  Industry  Interface Meet  on  20  February,  2016.  Dr.  DP  Malik,  Additional Commissioner, DAC, New Delhi inaugurated this exhibition in the presence of Smt. Usha Rani, DG, MANAGE and Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director,  IIMR. More  than 100  visitors  visited  these stalls. IIMR also set up a stall and the importance of sorghum

Operating Procedures (SOP) of ABIs and reporting mechanism of the project.  

Young Scientist Award Dr. Parashuram Patroti,  Scientist  (Genetics & Plant  Breeding)  was  conferred  with "Young Scientist  Award" during National  Conference on  Genetics  and  Cytogenetics held  at  UAS, Dharwad  during  1‐3  Feb,  2016.  He  received this award from honourable Vice‐chancellor of UAS,  Dharwad  Dr.  DP  Biradar  and  Dr.  PM Salimath  Vice‐chancellor  of  UAS,  Raichur.  IIMR  family congratulates  Dr.  Parashuram  and  wishes  him many more laurels in future.  

DUS review meeting  

The 10th   DUS  review meeting was organized by PPV&FRA, New  Delhi  at  MPKV  Rahuri,  Maharashtra  on  26  February 2016. It was inaugurated by Dr. KP Vishwanatha VC, MPKV in the presence of Dr. RR Hanchinal, Chairperson, PPV&FRA. The other  dignitaries  participated  in  this meeting were:   Dr.  RC Agrawal,  Registrar  General,    Dr.  KD  Kokate  Director  of Research, MPKV; Dr. M Anandraj Director IISR, Dr. MR Dinesh Director  IIHR, Dr. B  Singh, Director,  IIVR  and Dr.  KV  Prasad Director,  DFR.  Sh.  Dipal  Roy  Choudhury  Joint  Registrar, PPV&FRA, Dr. JS Chauhan, ADG  (Seeds),  ICAR; Dr. VR Shelar, Seed Research Officer & Nodal Officer, DUS project; Dr. Riyaz Shaik,  Co‐Nodal  Officer,  and  other  officials  associated with DUS review meeting. There were 8 technical sessions on DUS testing, maintenance, development of DUS testing guidelines for other commercial crops,  review of physical and  financial progress  etc.  Dr.  RR  Hanchinal,  Chairperson,  PPV&FRA  and Dr.  JS  Chauhan, ADG  (Seeds),  ICAR  appreciated  and  lauded the  conduct  of  DUS  trials  at  llMR‐Hyderabad  and  overall progress  made  by  the  IIMR  in  sorghum  plant  variety protection.  They  also  felt  that  the  PPP model  adopted  by llMR  needs  to  be  emulated  by  all  other  ICAR  institutes  in commercializing  the  technologies  developed.    Dr. Hariprasanna,  Sr.  Scientist  represented  IIMR,  Hyderabad  in the meeting, and presented the progress and participated  in deliberations.  

Fourth ITMU Meeting Organized  

The  IIMR’s  Institute  Technology  Management  Committee meeting was held on 8 February 2016 with  the approval of the Acting Director. Dr.  TG Nageswara  Rao, Acting Director and  Chairman  ITMC–IIMR  chaired  the  proceedings  and attended  by  the  following  member’s  viz.,  Dr  SK  Soam, Principal  Scientist  –  IPR  Expert, NAARM; Dr  Vilas A  Tonapi, Principal  Scientist  –  IPR  Expert,  IIMR;  Dr  IK  Das,  Principal Scientist and Member Secretary–IRC; Dr HS Talwar, Principal Scientist  and  Nodal  Officer,  PME  Cell;  Dr  B  Dayakar  Rao, Principal  Scientist;  Dr  CV  Ratnavathi,  Principal  Scientist;  Sri SKSingh,  SAO,  IIMR;  and  Sri  AN  Murthy  FAO,  IIMR.  The meeting  was  organized  by  Dr  M  Elangovan,  Member Secretary and Nodal Officer  (IPR). The agenda encompasses Finalization of  renewal  fee of Malleswara Agro Agencies  for CSH  24MF,  Benefit  sharing  of  royalty  charges  received  for CSH 24MF, Categorization of segregating material  into three types, Hearing notice  from  IPO  for design application, Azure Edge Ventures Pvt Ltd – Licensing of sorghum products, Draft advertisement for available technology for commercialization  

and millets as health and nutritious food was explained to the visitors  and  the  relevant  literature  was  distributed.  Dr.  S Ravikumar,  Sr.  Scientist  and   Mr. Vilas,  farm  superintendent and his team organized the exhibition.  

MoU with Azure Edge Ventures Pvt. Ltd

Memorandum of Understanding between  ICAR‐IIMR and M/s Azure Edge Ventures Pvt Ltd, Bangalore was signed to license 

the  IIMR  technology on  Jowar Puffs  to be marketed by M/s Azure Edge Ventures brand name in retail and wholesale. This Agreement  shall be  in  force  for a period of 36 months  from 20th February, 2016 to 19th February, 2019. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director – IIMR on behalf of IIMR and Ms Priyanka Ramasamy on behalf of Azure Edge Ventures  signed and exchanged  the agreement  in  the presence of Dr  IS Solanki, ADF  (FFC),  ICAR. The  agreement was  facilitated  by Dr M  Elangovan,  Principal Investigator  ‐  ITMU  and  Dr  B  Dayakar  Rao,  Principal Investigator  –  CoE‐Sorghum  during  the  Industry  Interface Meet held at IIMR on 20th February 2016.  

NAIF-ABI Sensitization Meet  

The  National  Agricultural  Innovation  Fund  –  Agri‐Business Incubation (NAIF‐ABI)’s sensitization meeting was organized at IIMR – Hyderabad on 03rd February 2016 at 02.30 PM  in the Conference Hall. Dr Vilas A  Tonapi,  Principal  Scientist, Dr M Elangovan,  PI‐ABI, Dr B Dayakar Rao, Co‐PI of  the ABI  along with Dr  K  Srinivas,  Principal  Scientist, NAARM  and  Jonothan Philroy, Deputy Manager, ABI‐ICRISAT attended  the meeting. The  purpose  of  the meeting  was  to  sensitize  activities  and standard  operating  procedures  of  the  new  ABIs  sanctioned under the IP&TM – ICAR. Dr K Srinivas informed that IIMR got high rating  in the process of selection the new ABIs.  It  is also informed that the budget may be released in the first week of March  2016.  Dr  Jonodhan  made  presentation  on  Standard

sorghum for biofuel production.  Vicente Trucillo, Global  leader,  sorghum  R&D,  Advanta seeds,  Santa  Fe,  Argentina,  Mr.  Satya  Dev,  Research 

coordinator  and  Sashikanth  Kulakarni,  Production Manager, Advanta India Ltd visited IIMR on 18 February, 2016. Dr. Vilas A  Tonapi,  Director,  explained  the  visitors  about  the  new initiatives, monitoring and R&D techniques being practiced at IIMR. The visitors showed interest to participate our research activities  under  PPP mode.  Dr.  AV  Umakanth,  Pr.  Scientist coordinated this visit.  Michael Wash, JD,  Senior  Scientific  Program  Manager, International  Life  Sciences  Institute  (ILSI)  Research Foundation, Washington, DC. USA and Dr. Vibha Ahuja, Chief 

General Manager, Biotech  Consortium  India  Ltd, New Delhi visited IIMR on 18 Feb, 2016. The members met with Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director and Drs. KBRS Visarada and D Balakrishna, IIMR Biosafety Officers (IBOs) as a part of recent  initiative of ICAR  on  Biosafety  Awareness  and  Compliance  Readiness. They also visited the transgenic  lab and Centre of Excellence on  sorghum  laboratories.  Dr.  B  Dayakar  Rao  briefed  the visitors  regarding  the  ongoing  activities  on  production  and promotion of millets foods as health foods.  Dr. TR Sharma, Director, NRC on Plant Biotechnology, New  Delhi  visited  IIMR  on  26th  February,  2016  as  a 

under  licensing,  IDF on  syrup making and  Implementation of Agri Business Incubation (ABI) at IIMR. Dr. M Elangovan, Nodal Officer IPTM has organized this meeting.  Dr. IK Das awarded as "Fellow of Indian Phytopathological Society"  Dr.  IK Das, Principal Scientist  (Plant Pathology) was   awarded 

fellow  of  Indian  Phytopathological  Society  at  the  VI International  Conference  on  "Plant,  Pathogen  and  People‐ Challenges  in Plant Pathology to Benefit Humankind”, held at NAS Complex,  New Delhi . Congratulations!  

Best Article Evaluation Committee Meeting The  meeting  of  best  article  evaluation  committee  was organised  on  12th  February,  2016  at  IIMR,  Hyderabad  for selection of best articles published  in in‐house Annual Hindi 

journal  ‐  Jowar  Sourabh,  Dr.  KBRS  Visharada,  Principal Scientist,  Chairperson  &  Dr.  HS  Talwar,  Dr.  VR  Bhagwat, Principal Scientists,   Dr. OP Sharma,  Joint Director  (A & AM), NIPHM, members  and  Dr. Mahesh  Kumar,  Technical Officer (Hindi),  Member‐secretary  participated  in  the  meeting.  Dr. Vilas  A  Tonapi,  Director,  IIMR  was  special  invitee  and  he suggested to award three cash prizes of Rs.2000/‐, 1500/‐ and Citation  letter  to  three  best  articles.  Accordingly  the committee selected three best articles.

Philip Ratnam, Comet & SPRING coordinator, South Sudan Programme Unit, Juba, Republic of South Sudan. Visited  IIMR on 16. Feb, 2016 –Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director,  IIMR apprised him on the ongoing research on grain, sweet, forage and dual‐ purpose sorghums. Dr. B Dayakar Rao briefed him about  the activities undertaken  at Centre of  Excellence on  sorghum  at IIMR  to  promote  millets  as  heath  foods.  Dr.  Ratnam  also visited  the  food  processing  and  technology  park  and  He sought  the  technology  assistance  from  IIMR  in  the  areas  of sorghum grain  for  industrial uses,  forage sorghum and sweet

Delhi visited  IIMR on 26 February, 2016.He met the Director of  IIMR,  Dr.  Vilas  Tonapi  and  Dr.  AV  Umakanth,  Principal 

Scientist and discussed about the availability of forage, sweet sorghum and high biomass  lines vis‐à‐vis  imported  lines. He was  appraised  about  the  best  material  we  have  in comparison  to  the  material  being  imported  by  the companies.  He  was  made  aware  about  the  modalities  of licensing of our hybrids and varieties.  Mr. Harsha Naidu, Associate  Vice  President  at  Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd, along with  three associates visited  IIMR 

on 27 February, 2016 on a mission  to  seek  technical advice and  techno‐economic  feasibility  of  producing  and manufacturing millet  value  added novel  food products. The team  interacted with  the Dr. Vilas Tonapi Director,  and  the scientists  Drs.  B  Dayakar  Rao  and  M  Elangovan.    All  the technical queries posed by them were answered by the IIMR team  and  they  also  visited  the  food  processing  and technology park at Centre of Excellence of IIMR.  Dr. HP Yadav, Project  Coordinator,  AICRP‐Pearl  Millet‐Mandor, Jodhpur visited  IIMR on 29 February, 2016. He met
