Greetings,

We made it! We made it to the end of the 2019 4-H year and are now staring the new year right in the face. I don’t know about you, but I am excited! There are so many awesome things I want to try and do, so many more people I want to meet. I am obviously still learning all about what Outagamie County 4-H is and how we can continue to make it the best that it can be for our youth.

One way to do that is for us to try something new! I know new can be scary and seem unsafe, and there are a lot of “what ifs…” that come with new. But I believe in you! I believe that we each (members, parents, volunteers, etc.) can try something new or different this year. Maybe it is a new project this year or a new role. Maybe you sign up to present at Family Learning Day, to go to a new training, or on a new educational travel opportunity. Maybe you just try your best to be the welcoming committee at your club meetings even though you think that is an awkward job. Whatever it is, I hope it is awesome!

However, I know just as well as you do that new does not always equal great. So, when that new thing isn’t great, take some time to ask yourself some questions. For example: Was it just not great this time? Is there anything that could be easily changed to make it better? Were others enjoying themselves? Is it maybe just not for me? What is one thing I learned from this experience? After you have had time to step back and analyze the new thing, give it another try or look for another new thing. New experiences are what help us to see things that we may have never noticed before. New is what helps us to continue “to look for ways to make the best better” in all that we do.

Please feel free to share with me or others what new thing you have tried and how it went. I wish you all the best trying your new things!

Let’s have a great NEW 4-H year!

A Word from the BoardThe 2019 Outagamie County Fair has come to an end and another 4-H year is finished as well. A new 4-H year has started. We had a little break between school starting and fall sports. Now we can reflect on the past 4-H year, everyone deserves a congratulations and high-five! Without your help, this year would not have been as successful. Your year may have included helping your kids stay on task with their projects, driving them to 4-H events or even helping at 4-H camp or during the county fair. Whatever it was that you did this year, thank you for everything you have done, nobody’s help goes unnoticed.

“Why Be A Volunteer?”It’s not for the money, it’s not for fame and it’s not for any personal gain. It’s just for love of fellow man. It’s just to lend a helping hand. It’s just to give a tithe of self. That’s something you can’t buy with wealth. It’s not the medal worn with pride. It’s just for that feeling deep inside. It’s that reward down in your heart. It’s feeling that you’ve been a part of helping others far and near. That’s what makes you a VOLUNTEER. ~Author Unknown

The Friends of the Mansion has asked us to provide a petting zoo again. If you have any animals you could bring that day or any extra hands to promote 4-H we would love to have you! Saturday, October 5 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm we will be promoting 4-H at the Highlands Elementary School Tough Kids Challenge in Appleton. We would like youth or adults to assist other kids with activities that we provide such as: Milk the Cow, the fishing game, bottle rockets, a simple craft and just promote 4-H. This is a fun event for kids and adults. If you have a dog to bring that would be a fine addition as well! Please contact Mary Hoefler if you have any questions or if you are interested in helping that day. [email protected] or 766-7933.

Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers who would be available to help with occasional outreach programs around the county. Main responsibilities include manning a booth and engaging in conversation with the attendees and answering questions about 4-H and our county 4-H program. Members who attended trips would make great presenters both at an outreach event or visiting club meetings.

If you are interested in helping out occasionally, please contact an Outreach Committee member. Phil Hietpas: 931-5372 Mary Hoefler: [email protected] Sheila Vander Zanden: [email protected]

County Fair RecapThe Unveiling of 4-Hex-ellenceThe project is titled 4-Hex-ellence and was designed by a group of four Youth Leaders (Makayla Mashlan, Alli Stencil, Bryce Barker, and Kylee Smet) and a local artist. The project started about 3 or 4 years ago when adult leaders wanted a way to recognize past leaders that have made an impact on our program. After much research, many designs, and lots of conversation the adult leaders turned to the youth leaders to help them design something that would achieve what they were hoping. The youth leaders got to meet with a local artist and started brainstorming.

The idea of including more of the youth leaders came into play with the hexagons that are wood burned on the right and left sides of the clover shape in the middle. The artist came in and had them create a design of their 4-H life journey on one third of the hexagon, words that describe them and what 4-H makes them think of on another third and a design that best represents themselves on the last third. The youth came up with the saying in the middle of the design and decided that it would be best if the project represented all leaders, past, present, and future.

The sculpture was revealed at the 2019 fair and is a permanent fixture in Building Five. There is talk of possible additions to the sculpture in the future.

Katelyn Vosters of Wide Awake Forward 4-H Club currently attends UW-Stevens Point and opted to remain in Outagamie 4-H this past year. Some of the projects Katelyn experienced were Photography, Home Environment, Cake Decorating,

Arts and Dairy. Katelyn has volunteered for her club to help promote 4-H and community service by working on the Breakfast on the Farm and volunteering at a nursing home to name a few. Katelyn expressed that 4-H allowed her to strengthen her work ethic by working with hands on projects. It gave her the support to work towards a goal, and complete it.

Allison Stencil is a member of Fast Trackers 4-H Club and is one of our true role models. Allison has experienced a wide variety of projects. She showed outstanding community service by assisting with her club’s “On the Farm,” Ringing Bells for the

Salvation Army, “Cookies in a Jar”and many others. Allison’s leadership shined as she worked closely on her club’s social media, mentoring youth and adults. She was a club president and was active with drama, basketball, fair booth, Ag Olympics and demonstrations. Allison noted that she had continually grown in leadership, problem solving, goal setting, self-confidence, communication and organizing. Best wishes as you head off this fall to UW-Platteville with an interest in Construction Management.

Savannah Jens of Fast Trackers and previously Country Slickers 4-H Club has been a 4-H member for 12 years. She has held the offices of Club Treasurer, Vice President and President. She also enjoyed her educational travel

experiences. Savannah volunteered for many club and county 4-H activities and helped with the 4-H Outreach committee several times. 4-H has taught her valuable life lessons and skills, including serving others, leadership and making a difference in someone’s life. She made giving back to others and her community a priority. Best wishes as you continue your education at Concordia University.

Anthony Diedrich, an 11 year member of Fast Trackers 4-H Club is no stranger to 4-H and the Livestock committee as he has helped to organize the Youth Leaders of the Livestock Committee. His project list includes: Dairy, Beef,

Home Environment, Swine and youth leaders. Tony’s leadership extends from the club to the county level. He has supported his community through bell ringing, “On the Farm” at a local nursing home, fruit basket delivery, and fund raising efforts to support needy families. He was in the Drama festival, played basketball and many other opportunities that 4-H offers. Being in drama, youth leaders and the club president has taught him accountability and leadership. Tony plans to attend Fox Valley Technical College with an interest in Business Management.

Adam Sprangers, a member of Country Slickers 4-H club, has been involved in 4-H for 13 years. Some of the projects that he experienced are Art, Dairy Goat, Drawing and Painting, Foods & Nutrition, Vegetables, Scale

Models, Photography and Youth Leaders. Adam has volunteered as a 4-H camp counselor, working at the 4-H dairy bar and assisting the fair superintendents and committee members in the foods area on entry day. He has served as a club officer in nearly all positions. Adam participated in drama and music fest, Citizen Washington Focus, demonstrations, basketball, club trip and more. In his essay, Adam has learned vital teamwork and leadership skills through 4-H. Being a camp counselor, Adam learned great listening skills. Adam will attend UW-Platteville this fall with an interest in Mechanical Engineering.
