Finn Wendell Basinger was born on August 12th to our daughter Mary Beth with her husband Ty close by. So now I will learn how to be a grandparent. I have had good role models, remembering my own grandparents and appreciating the support of my own parents when our children were growing up. I also remember what Everett Taylor told me one time. Ev served several pastorates here on the Central Coast, including Shandon, Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande. He also was the Dean for many elementary age church camps. He carefully recruited volunteers to staff his camps, including one who was designated the “Camp Grandparent,” whose sole role on the staff was to give positive feedback. Other camp staff would have the responsibility of enforcing rules and keeping order. But Ev instructed the Camp Grandparent by saying, “If you come upon a group of children throwing rocks where they shouldn’t, all I want you to do is tell them how good their aim is.” That strategy may work better for one week at camp as compared to years and decades of relationship with ones grandchildren. But I think I like the general concept. And perhaps we would do well to extend it. Discipline is not to be ignored when it comes to parenting and living in community in the church and in the world, but affirmation, love and grace are more important. Let us err on the side of love. As a young missionary, Andy was diagnosed with malaria in 1996 while in Kenya. Now, along with layman Mark Witman, Andy will ride more than 550 miles (from Paso Robles to Malibu and up to Bishop) from September 6-12th. Together they hope to raise $25,000 to save 2500 men, women, and particularly children from malaria. Come out to cheer for Andy and Mark as they pass through Morro Bay, Los Osos and San Luis Obispo on Saturday, September 6th. Check out their full schedule online at http://www.imagineride.com/schedule/. They will stop for lunch in SLO at 11:15 (ish).
