Sharing Our Faith With Each Other

by Pastor June Wilkins

So those who welcomed his message were baptized,

and that day about three thousand persons were

added. 42

They devoted themselves to the apostles’

teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and

the prayers. – Acts 2:41-42

Whenever you read the book of Acts, it’s obvious that

anytime the disciples were together, they spent a

huge amount of their time to talking about their faith

and praying together. In the thousands of years since

that time, many Christian churches (especially

mainline Christian churches) have lost that focus and

habit. For seven weeks, starting this October,

Gethsemane will work on regaining that practice. Here

is some information:

• Starting on October 12, we will meet in small

groups on Sundays at 10:45am immediately

after worship. We will share our faith, and

pray for one another and our ministry

together.

• This will be similar to our Lenten Study of

Unbinding Your Heart. We will use a different

book in the same series called Unbinding Your

Soul.

• You do not need to have been in the Lenten

Groups to participate now.

• You will be in a different group with different

people. I am hoping we have even wider

participation from the congregation.

• We will ask you to sign up for these groups

during the month of September.

• If you would like to be in a group with a

spouse or friend, you will be able to ask for

that.

• This is a great opportunity to invite someone

who is not part of a faith community – or not

even sure about faith in God or Jesus – to

come and share their thoughts with other

people in a safe group. They do not need to

come to worship, just come for the small

group at 10:45am.

• If you bring a friend, they will be put into a

group with you.

• You will have the option to continue or not

after four weeks.

• If you can’t be there every week, that

shouldn’t stop you from joining in!

If you don’t normally participate in our Adult

Education, consider making a commitment for these

seven weeks.

I believe that amazing things can happen when we

devote ourselves to prayer and to one another. I know

that the Holy Spirit can work through our relationships

and our open hearts. I am looking forward to see what

great things happen at Gethsemane!

Peace,

Pr. June Wilkins

STEWARDSHIPSTEWARDSHIPSTEWARDSHIPSTEWARDSHIP

"Jesus wants us to give because it's good for us."

Sunday, September 28 guest preacher Hank

Langknecht will address this topic in his sermon. He is

preaching at the invitation of your Stewardship aka

Growing in Discipleship Ministry Team. Last February

our Ministry Team sponsored the “Gethsemane is

Awesome” banner in the narthex. Then in March we

held a session during Adult Education hour on the

difference between Discipleship and Membership.

Hank was one of the presenters during that class.

Some of the discussion concerned why giving is

something Jesus wants of his disciples. The familiar

reasons related to thanksgiving for gifts received were

mentioned, and then Hank said Jesus wants us to give

because it is good for us, as in good for growing our

faith and discipleship. Then someone said they would

love to hear his sermon on the topic. All jests aside,

here it is, Hank's sermon on

"Jesus wants us to give because it's good for us."

This is a Growing in Discipleship event sponsored by

your Stewardship Ministry Team.

Blessed are the Peacemakers,

for they will be called Children of God –

A Call for Peace in the Holy Land

Dear Friends,

Arrangements for me to lead a 4-week learning

experience on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were

made months ago. What a sad and tragic irony that

our sessions were scheduled for this time frame, right

at the conclusion of this horrendous round of

violence, death and destruction that we have all been

witness to in the war between Israel and Hamas in

Gaza. I say ‘conclusion’ with some apprehension

because as I write, the conflict has not subsided. It is

still ongoing. At least we are all acutely aware of the

significance of this interminable conflict, and the

importance of finding some resolution. It is not a

hopeful time.

Nevertheless, this is what we are called to do, to

engage the world as peacemakers, as the people of

God who have a vision and a hope for a better day and

for a better way than repeatedly resorting to violence

as the way of resolving our differences. It is never easy

being peacemakers, and it is especially difficult now.

However, as children of God, as the ones who have

been given a vision, it is a time of urgency, a critical

time to engage and imagine a better way.

For our time together, I have planned the following

schedule of activities.

Sept. 14 – A Quick Overview of the Israeli-Palestinian

Conflict

Sept. 21 – A Zionist Vision for Peace with Visitors from

the Columbus Jewish Community

Sept. 28 – Israel, Gaza and the West Bank: Drawing

Distinctions

Oct. 05 – Don’t Just Sit There: An Action Plan for

Making a Difference

There is a lot packed into this four-week schedule of

discussions, including especially hearing from our

friends in the Jewish community, friends of mine who

are active in J Street, the pro-Israel, pro-peace Jewish

organization that focuses on education and advocacy

for a two-state solution between Israel and the

Palestinians. I hope you will join me in this 4-week

undertaking. I will also suggest some reading

assignments as a way of helping us more fully engage

this terrible conflict that invites our attention.

I am looking forward to our time together.

It’s a New Year!

Classes for all ages begin anew on Sunday, Sept. 14,

10:45am.

Children ages 3-K, grades 1-5, confirmation youth in

grades 6-8, and high school will all gather each Sunday

in their rooms in the education wing. Sometimes we

will even do things together! This year we will focus

on the lectionary readings to help us connect worship

with our learning time and our church life. Drama, art,

puppets, service projects – all these will be a part of

our time together. Stop by on a Sunday morning to

see what’s going on – it’s a happening place!

Being a part of a child’s or youth’s life can take many

forms. Most people think of ‘teaching’ as lesson plans,

weekly classes, discipline. But here at Gethsemane,

‘teaching’ is different. It could be sharing with the

children/youth a passion of yours. It could be a

helping hand on a service project. Or it could be a

friendly face greeting a child or a note written to say

“I’m thinking of you”. Of course, we need those

teachers so please consider but if you don’t think of

yourself as one, consider yourself a friend. We can ALL

do that!

Coming up . . . July 15-19, 2015

Watch for details as we begin our

preparation for the journey to Detroit.

SCHOOL SUPPLIESSCHOOL SUPPLIESSCHOOL SUPPLIESSCHOOL SUPPLIES

On Saturday, Aug. 16, Gethsemane distributed

backpacks and school supplies to children of our Food

Pantry clients. Thanks to your generous donations we

had plenty to go around with some left over to hand

out again after school started on the 20th when the

children had lists of specific items they needed.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLVACATION BIBLE SCHOOLVACATION BIBLE SCHOOLVACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Helping Hands – 2014

What a great week we had! 25 children from Play & Learn, our tutoring program,

the Broad Meadows area, and Gethsemane sang together, heard stories of God’s

love, made friendship gifts, and collected food from our neighborhood. Pr June and

Kevin McCarty told us of the Good Samaritan story – some of us even helped as

actors!

We heard that we should love

God with all our heart and also

love our neighbors as ourselves.

Who is our neighbor? Pastor

June helped us understand that

everyone is our neighbor.

So we made friendship

bracelets to share with

our friends at the food

pantry, and shiny tissue paper heart magnets, and even cat and dog toys to

give to our food pantry friends who are pet owners. Kate Lutz helped us

learn how to make bracelets (She’s made a lot! She’s a girl scout!) Thanks,

Kate!

And we collected food from our neighbors on Lincoln Ave., Stanton Ave.,

and Meadowlark Lane. Thanks to Jim Siebert and Jane Sieberth who walked

the streets on Tuesday delivering flyers so people knew to leave food on their porch for us to pick up in wagons

on Thursday. We had a great time pulling those

wagons! Thank

you Play and Learn

for loaning us your

wagons! We

collected 307

items of food . . .

wow!! We finished

our evenings with

none other than

ooey, gooey,

drippy ice cream.

Thank you to all these people who helped at VBS . . . Judy Kukikowski, Paula Sauer, Diane Langner, Margaret

Murphy, Mike Murphy, Kelly Seifert, Hilda Lyatuu, Mandy Burchfield, Angela Miller, Kate Lutz, Jane Sieberth.

Thanks to Mike and Alice Siddall for our Wednesday hotdog supper; Pr June and Kevin McCarty for driving the

bus, telling the stories, and leading songs; and Dr. Tim for playing music. –Terri Siebert, VBS director.

Gethsemane’s Fall Service Day – Part I:

Getting the Word Out

This Fall, the Outreach Ministry Team is once again sponsoring an outreach to the

neighborhood around the church. On Saturday, Nov. 8, we will have a Service Day

where our members will help local homeowners with small repair or maintenance

projects around their homes and yards. But in order to get the projects to do, we

have to get the word out. For that, we need your help to walk around the

neighborhood and drop off Service Day fliers at area homes. We will do the

walking on two Sundays: Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. On both days we will walk no more

than two hours (about noon to 2pm), and if you can only do part of the time, that’s

fine, too. (Another option is to deliver fliers on a week day.) To really have an

impact, we need lots of volunteers to deliver the fliers, so please, look for the sign

up sheets in the Narthex and Atrium Way and sign up for one or both days! If you

have any questions, contact Jim Siebert, Gary Rader, Mark Hagerdorn or Joe Reilly.

God’s Work. Our Hands

Once again the ELCA is encouraging its nearly

10,000 congregations to put their faith in action

by serving their communities in ways that share

the love of God with all of God’s people on

“God’s Work. Our Hands” Servant

Event, Sunday, Sept. 7.

You can sign up for one of the service projects

in the narthex.

• Make desserts or salads for Faith Mission

• Serve lunch at Faith Mission

• Sort “Move on Out” items at Faith Mission

• Work at the Clintonville-Beechwold community garden

• Clean/paint or do maintenance work at Jacob’s Porch

• Tie a quilt for Lutheran World Relief at church.

Wear your “God’s Work. Our Hands.” t-shirts to help increase the visual impact of

the Servant Event.

SERVESERVESERVESERVE

Quilting – The Final Push!

On September 28 in worship, we will dedicate our

year's worth of quilting – all the cutting, sewing, and

tying will become a beautiful display of colors, shapes,

and love. Your help is needed! On Sunday, Sept. 7, as

part of “God's Work. Our Hands” Servant Event, we

will knot quilts in the Great Hall following worship. If

you can tie a knot, you can do this! Then on Saturday

Sept. 27, we will finish all the quilts and decorate the

sanctuary pews with those beautiful colors. Help is

needed! After the dedication, the quilts will be boxed

up and sent off with those from other central Ohio

Lutheran churches to the distribution center at New

Windsor, MD. and then on to places around the world.

Be a part of this great mission. We are grateful to the

West Franklin County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for

its financial support which allows us to purchase the

batting and backings for the quilts. For more

information, see Terri Siebert, Quilt coordinator, at

PLAPLAPLAPLAY & LEARNY & LEARNY & LEARNY & LEARN

PLAY AND LEARN CHRISTIAN CHILD CARE

If you are asking yourself, where did the summer go? We are

able to tell you that we know. It disappeared in the fun many

children had at Play and Learn.

There was swimming, biking, playing, creating, reading, painting,

climbing, running, jumping, singing, listening, walking to the park

for lunch . . . you surely get the picture.

One whole week was filled with the Play and Learn Olympics!

Who wouldn't enjoy participating in these hilarious venues: fishing for not so real fish,

Jell-O eating, and jumping like bunnies relays. Everyone was a winner at the class medal

ceremonies, complete with Olympic fanfare.

There were many special visitors this summer at our school too. The fire fighters and the

BIG RED truck came. We listened to wonderful stories told by Miss Joyce (Geary). Plus

Laura the Librarian was here with lots and lots of books. Never a dull moment at Play and

Learn except maybe during nap time. Smile!

Finally, the true indicator that summer IS gone and our fall program has begun in earnest

was our Meet the Teacher Night with Art Show and Ice Cream. All the children and

parents visited each child's classroom for the fall and talked with their child's new

teachers. It was a "delicious" success.

So now we are into the fall. The Director and Assistant Director are working this year to

align the P&L self-developed curriculum with the state requirements for early childhood

education. If you have been reading about the Step Up To Quality program, you already

know about the Star Rating system. Our wonderful child care program here at Gethsemane

is in the process of working towards the goals set out by the Ohio State Board of

Education. We'll keep you informed of the stars we acquire as we move ahead.

Remember to recommend Play and Learn to your neighbors, family, and friends.
