The 21 st Annual IAWA Conference was a wonderful event attended by over 100 women executives from all over the world and from all areas of the aviation industry. The European Commission graciously co- hosted the conference and we were very fortunate to have the Director General of Transport for the European Commission, Daniel Calleja, deliver the opening re- marks. In keeping with the IAWA commit- ment to excellence, the program was truly outstanding thanks to the tireless efforts of our conference planning committee, Katherine Staton, Ann Field, Marianne Barnabo and Mia Wouters. Kudos also go to Kathy Posner, for once again doing an extraordinary job with our sponsorship efforts. All of these women did an abso- lutely fantastic job putting together an event of the highest quality and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication to IAWA. I also want to express our sin- cere appreciation to each of our sponsors for their generous support. I have said this before but it bears repeating, without our sponsors’ commitment to IAWA, the annual conferences would not be possi- ble. To each of you and/or your firms who sponsored this program, we give you our sincerest thanks. Of course I must also thank each of our speakers. Throughout the two days of the program, we heard presentations and discussions on topics which are at the forefront of our industry, all delivered by women who are experts in their fields. We heard from Carol Hallet, US Chamber of Commerce, Jacqueline Foster, Member of the Euro- pean Parliament, Nancy LoBue Federal Aviation Administration, Emmanuel Maire, European Commission; and Kathryn Leahy, from Virgin Atlantic Airways. Also joining us for the conference were two of our scholarship recipients, Ana Cristina Rosa from Leiden University in the Nether-lands and Rachel Pachoud from McGill in Montreal. Additionally, Lisa Sullivan, the first woman in our mentorship program, was also in attendance. It was wonderful to have these women with us and to see IAWA ’ s outreach to the next generation in effect! Although we have barely unpacked our bags from Brussels, we are already making plans for next year’ s conference in Boston. Mark your calendars; the 22nd Annual Conference

will take place October 6-8th, 2010. Remem-ber, we are always anxious to hear from you. Please let us know your thoughts about our programs: topics to discuss, events to include in the program, changes or additions to the program...whatever is on your mind, let us hear from you so we can continue with our efforts to make IAWA the best organization it can be. Best regards, Debra Fowler

Susan M. Baer, who has spent 21 years in several aviation department roles at the Port Authority, has been appointed Director of Aviation , the head of the Agency ’ s aviation de-partment. After 32 years at Port Authority, she is the first woman in Port Authority history to as-

sume the job. She replaces William R. DeCota, who died unexpectedly in Sep-tember. She takes over one of the world ’ s largest and busiest aviation systems, with oversight responsibilities for John F. Kennedy International, New-ark Liberty International, LaGuardia, Stewart International and Teterboro airports. Last year alone, more than 107 million fliers used the Port Authority air-ports, which also handled roughly 2.4 million tons of cargo. Susan, who has held the department ’ s No. 2 slot since last year, will continue the agency focus on modernizing facilities at all its air-ports, as she takes the helm of a de-partment with a $1.3 billion operating budget and a $594 million capital budget in 2009. Additionally, she will focus on making NextGen satellite navi-gation technology a reality in the avia-

tion industry, while also encouraging airspace improvements to help reduce flight delays and maintain safety in the New York/New Jersey region. Joining the Port Authority as a management analyst in the late 1970s, she quickly rose through the agency ’ s ranks in the Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals Depart-ment before joining the aviation depart-ment in 1988. Among her aviation achievements is being the only person in Port Authority history to manage the agency ’ s three major airports: JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia. From 1988 to 1994, she served as general manager of aviation customer and mar-keting services before managing La-Guardia until 1998. From then until 2007, she was at the helm of Newark Liberty with responsibilities that in-cluded oversight of Teterboro. In 2007, she became JFK ’ s general manager before being appointed the agency ’ s deputy director/chief operating officer in 2008. Susan earned her bachelor ’ s degree from Barnard College in urban studies and anthropology and an MBA from New York University. Congratu-lations to Susan, this is an outstanding achievement and IAWA is very proud to have Susan as one of its long standing member and regular speaker!
