September NEWSLETTER 2016

FROM ADMINISTRATION A Warm Welcome to our Students and Families! It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that we open our doors to welcome our students and families to a new school year. This year will be a very special school opening as we welcome many students who are reallocating to CTK from other learning communities. We are excited to receive all students and begin the process of shaping classroom routines and strengthening friendships new and old. At Christ the King school we have an academic focus of “Learning For All Whatever It Takes”. There is an expectation that all students will succeed and we work together with our students, families and staff to ensure that supports are in place to ensure success. Our spiritual theme centers on Jesus as our model of how we relate to one another with mercy within a learning community. Each member of our school is encouraged to walk in the footsteps of Jesus as we come “To Know … To Love… To Serve” one another in faith. Along with this focus we will work together to bring to life the district faith theme of “Be Merciful Just As Your Father is Merciful” Luke 6:36. Families can expect to receive a phone call from their child’s homeroom teacher beginning Monday August 29 through Wednesday August 31st. We believe connecting with our families prior to the first day of school relieves potential anxiety as our students begin a new school year. This phone call also allows us to make a personal connection, welcome a student into a homeroom and set up our students for success. I would like to thank our teachers for their efforts in making this connection with our families as they welcome students to their classrooms. The school day at Christ the King School runs from 8:55 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. On Thursday, September 1st all elementary and junior high students will assemble on the school tarmac at the back of the school at 8:55 a.m. Grade level and teacher signage will indicate where you are to meet your teacher. Students are asked to gather at their grade level sign and wait for their teachers to escort them into the classroom. Kindergarten students will gather at the front of the school. Please note that September 1 is a full day of school for grade 1-9.

Teachers have been busy planning and preparing school start up activities for their classrooms as well as sports, fine arts, health initiative, liturgies, year book etc. Student participation and leadership is encouraged as all students benefit from investing in activities provided. Please encourage your child to become active in school activities and to make a difference through their participation. Our hope is that every child will feel a strong sense of belonging at Christ the King which in turn will lead to student success. We will use our monthly newsletter and our weekly Royal Roar as an opportunity to inform you about what is happening at Christ the King and provide information and invitations to upcoming events. Our goal is to work together for the good of each child and to ensure that every student experiences the most optimum learning opportunity. We look forward to working in partnership with you our families as we continue to build our school community together. Please feel free to contact the school to discuss any matters that affect your child’s education or possible ways that you may support the school in attaining our goals. Butterflies and Blessings for a New School Year

A new school year…we are beginning again.

Fresh faces, a fresh start.

No matter how many times we go through it,

There will always be something special about this time of year.

Butterflies in our stomachs…

Students, teachers and parents apprehensive about change and challenges ahead.

Anxious anticipation, students so very eager to learn.

Prayers of thanksgiving for each and every student,

For the privilege of learning together, for the butterflies that energize our preparation,

That drive all of us…

teachers, students and parents to reflect and improve.

Prayers for acceptance that we will welcome the changes that occur.

Prayers for guidance that we will participate in the work

of teaching and learning to the best of our ability.

Prayers for understanding and acceptance,

that we may be merciful toward one another.

God who watches over us, hear our prayers,

spoken and silent as we begin a new school year.

Butterflies and blessings…..

what a wonderful way to begin!

PRIOR TO FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Families can expect to receive a phone call from their child’s homeroom teacher beginning Monday, August 29 through to Wednesday, August 31. This has been a practice here at Christ the King since our opening and not only does it relieve some potential anxiety regarding the first day but we find it is also a great way to set up our students for success. As we move into a school year, families and students wait in anticipation for news regarding class lists and teachers. As in previous years we do not take parent requests for a child’s class placement. A significant amount of time goes into preparing class lists ensuring that we look at the whole child, taking into consideration the social, emotional and academic areas of each individual child. As always our staff works together with our families to create the best opportunity for success of each and every child.

CLASSES BEGIN / THE FIRST DAY

On Thursday, September 1st at 8:55 am all elementary students will assemble on the school tarmac at the back of the school. Grade level and teacher signage will indicate where you are to meet your teacher. Students are asked to gather at their grade level sign and wait for their teachers to escort them into the classroom. Kindergarten students will gather at the front of the school.

Please Note: This is a full day of school for grades 1 through 9.

The concession will be open on September 1st and 2nd but will only have limited items (snacks and drinks).

The concession will open on Sept 6th with our regular menu. A copy will be posted on the web-site.

COMBINED GRADE CLASSROOMS As a way to reduce class sizes in certain grade levels, Christ the King school will be implementing two combined grade classrooms. A combined grade class is two grades taught in a single classroom setting. As with any classroom, a combined class consists of children from various social, physical and intellectual developments. Research has shown that a combined classes can foster an increased level of:

Social and academic growth

Respect for others

Independence and responsibility

Increased motivation to learn

Leadership and decision making skills

Just as in a same-grade class, teachers in a combined grade use a wide range of teaching strategies to teach the outcomes required for each grade level and accommodate a wide range of abilities. Students in a combined grade are expected to follow the expectations for their specific grade. There are opportunities for whole group instruction as well as small group and individual instruction. Just as in a same-grade class, students can be grouped based on a specific task or on their learning needs. For the older students it is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce confidence and leadership. For the younger students the same holds true, however in addition to those skills, younger students can benefit from modelling the academic and emotional maturity of the older students. Most importantly, as with any grade, combined or same grade, parents are most important to their child’s success.

LUNCH PROCEDURES

Closed Campus LUNCH POLICY Christ the King Catholic School operates a closed campus over the lunch break. A closed campus means students eat their lunch at school and they remain on school property under the supervision of adults in the building. Students who eat their lunch at school are expected to remain on school property during lunch hour. The school cannot be responsible for students who leave the school grounds. This past practice has been endorsed by staff, school council and administration. As well, the policy is overwhelmingly supported by parents.

There is one exception to the current policy: 1. Students who eat lunch at home and as a result walk home each day.

Parents who wish to allow their son/daughter to leave the property on a regular basis to eat lunch at home must sign an Exemption Form. By signing this form the parent/guardian grants the student permission to leave the school grounds over the lunch hour every school day. The form is available upon request at the office. Please note we are requesting students do not bring friends home with them when they go home for lunch. Elementary Lunch Procedure 12:16-12:36 Students eat their lunch in the large gym

Students requiring additional time will be allowed to finish eating before going outside 12:37-12:59 Students go outside and play 12:59 Students return to classrooms for instruction We would advise you to ensure students have a healthy snack for morning recess, as they do not eat lunch until 12:16. Junior High Lunch Procedures Junior High student will go outside first and then eat their lunch. 12:16-12:34 JH students to go outside 12:35-12:54 JH students eat their lunch in the gathering area 12:56 Bell 12:56-12:59 TA-PM 1:01 Afternoon instruction begins

PACKAGES/FEES SENT HOME ON SEPT 1st On the first day of school, each child will bring home a school package. These forms need to be filled out and returned to the school by September 23rd however we would encourage you to get them in ASAP. We encourage you to pay school fees online. You will receive more information regarding this process in the packages sent home on September 1st. If you have any questions regarding the fees or any of the forms please do not hesitate to contact the school during office hours.

If paying fees at the school we ask that parents issue one cheque per child. DO NOT issue one cheque per family. This process will help the office staff to process the fees in a timely manner. Please return the forms in the package with your child (ren) to their homeroom teacher.

NUT ALLERGIES ANAPHYLAXIS MANAGEMENT

In the September packages that will be sent home with your child you will find a medical conditions and allergies form. We want to collect this information in a timely fashion so we can have appropriate protocols in place to ensure student safety. We are aware already of a number of students who have nut allergies. Prevention is of course the best approach reducing the risk of severe reaction. Therefore, we are requesting your cooperation in refraining from sending food products containing nuts to school with your child. While school administrators and staff continually work towards an allergy- safe environment, an allergen-free or peanut free milieu with zero risk cannot be reasonably guaranteed.

BYOD – BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE POLICY As a district we recognize that the online environment is one that is in a constant state of flux. Students should develop a knowledgeable, responsible and ethical understanding of its purpose to support school instruction. Our district and school procedures and policies address four concepts with regard to digital online safety:

1. Protection of personal information.

2. Appropriate use.

3. Safe surfing for students.

4. Appropriate correspondence with staff.

This year we have included the Christ the King Bring Your Own Device BYOD policy in the collection of information your grade 4-9 child will receive to bring home on the first day of school. Please review this with your child, sign and return to school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we work together to use technology to enhance learning.

LOCKDOWN Just as we have regular fire drills in order to practice safety procedures, we also practice lockdown procedures. During the course of a school year we are required to have one “announced” practice (where you will be informed ahead of time) and one “unannounced” (which will be a surprise to everyone). There are two types of Lockdowns: internal and external. Internal indicates a problem inside the school while external indicates an unsafe situation taking place in the community. Lockdown practice is a PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE which safeguards all of us and is in line with our Occupational Health and Safety practices. Over time lockdown procedures will become automatic and as familiar to everyone as fire drills are currently. Our first lock down practice will take place in October and families will be notified of the date in the October newsletter.

ONLINE APPAREL STORE: SALE COMING IN SEPTEMBER Christ the King School will be offering a promotion on logo apparel in September. From September 12 to September 23, you can take advantage of great promotional prices on CTK logo apparel through the online apparel store. The school will also be offering sizing day from September 7 to September 9 so that you can see what sizes are available. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to purchase CTK logo apparel and to support the school. More information will be sent home shortly.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parent volunteers are valued contributors to our school community and are warmly welcomed. Volunteering in the school is an ideal way for parents to become actively involved in their child’s educational experience. Your child and our entire school community become the beneficiaries of your donation of time. Parents planning on helping in classrooms and going on fieldtrips must attend a volunteer orientation. We have planned four

orientations for the month of September.

Volunteer Orientations Wednesday, Sept. 7th - 1:30-2:00pm AND 7:00-7:30pm Tuesday, Sept. 13th - 4:00-4:30pm AND 6:00-6:30 pm

All volunteers need to attend a Volunteer Orientation each year so they can volunteer in or out of the school.

We will schedule other sessions at a later date.

STUDENT LEARNING ASSESSMENTS

Once again our district has been selected to participate in the third year of the Student Learning Assessment (SLA) pilot. Assessment is a process with the primary purpose of improving students learning. From September 12th to October 7th, grade 3 students at Christ the King School will be participating in the SLA Pilot program with the completion of the digital literacy and numeracy component and a written performance based literacy and numeracy component. Simply put, both literacy and numeracy are the fundamental reading, writing, reasoning and critical thinking skills that allow students to build more complex skills and prepare them for life-long learning. The Student Learning Assessments align with the vision of Inspiring Education by enabling parents and teachers an opportunity to gain feedback on a student’s strengths or areas of need with the sole purpose of enhancing his/her learning. By providing feedback on a student’s performance early in the year, parents and teachers have an opportunity to improve a student’s areas of need, and ensure their strengths remain strong. The findings which will be available to teachers and will be used to guide teachers in their practice of teaching and learning. Student results will be available to parents through teachers during the November parent/teacher conferences. For more information on this Alberta Education initiative please visit: https://education.alberta.ca/student-learning-assessments/about-the-slas/everyone/general-information-bulletin/

D2L D2L is a very useful communication tool for parents, students and teachers. If parents would like to become more familiar with

this educational tool, please contact Mr. Moroney at [email protected] to set up a time to meet. We will pick a date

early in September to come together to learn more.

SCHOOL COUNCIL CORNER

Welcome back CTK families, we hope you had a wonderful summer! School Council is looking forward to working together with the parents and staff of Christ the King in assisting our children to have a successful school year. We have many fun and exciting events planned for this year. On Friday, September 30th we are thrilled to once again host Movie in the Park! Details on the event and how to register will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. To obtain further information regarding upcoming council events join us at our school council meetings, as well as visit the parent page on the CTK website. We need you! Involvement in the School Council provides parents with insight into understanding changes within education, keeping current with school events and having a say in handling current educational issues that affect our children. School Council provides parents a connection to the school district, thus keeping up to date with district information. School Council offers numerous ways for CTK parents to volunteer and be involved within the school. These include, but are not limited to: leadership roles on the School Council Executive, assisting with school council events, joining committees to organize and help implement these events and assist in raising funds to give additional financial support to the school. Our Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday, September 13th @ 7pm. We encourage all parents to attend. The school council budget will be presented and approved, also a proposed amendment for constitution/bylaws will be reviewed. Elections for all Executive positions will occur, along with selections for the committee/coordinator positions. For the various committees we are looking for parents interested in leading each committee, as well as a group of parents to assist them. For further information on these roles refer to the School Council section on the CTK website or contact Kimberly Loewen at [email protected].

Elected Positions – Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer

Committee/Coordinator Positions – Parish Liaison, Volunteer Coordinator (position already filled), Fundraising

Committee, Event Planning Committee, Food Day Lunch Committee, Staff Appreciation Committee.

We are excited to offer parents opportunities to help raise funds this year! These fundraising efforts would go towards supporting council budget items, school social events, council operations and student academic needs, such as technology and programming. The plan this year is to offer the following fundraisers:

September – ADmazing Coupon books (formerly SUTP) – We are bringing back the coupon book, with the same

retailers (over $25,000 in savings) and for a great price of $20.00. Council will receive $9.30 from each book sold, that’s

a huge profit 50% of every coupon book (less GST) going towards the school. Packages will be to be sent home in early

September.

November/December – Big Box of Cards or Fundscrip gift cards – If the financial need arises we may consider one of

these 2 fundraising options. Further information to follow in October.

April – Colour Me Fit Fitness Fundraiser – Students will be directly involved in gathering pledges to raise funds for their

school, while experiencing the fun and excitement of enhancing their physical fitness and school spirit. Council will

solicit community sponsorships to cover costs of hosting the event which include t-shirts and prizes to encourage

participation.

All year – Food Days – by using Healthy Hunger, council offers a variety of special lunches on fun food days. By popular

request, extra food days are being added. Look for further information later in September, refer to the School Council

page on the CTK website for updates.

If preferred, for a fundraising donation a cheque may be written at any time throughout the school year. The Calgary Catholic School District will issue tax receipts for school donations exceeding $25.00. Please contact Kimberly Loewen or Patty Makowski for any questions at the contact information provided below.

HEALTHY HUNGER FOOD DAY LUNCH PROGRAM www.HealthyHunger.ca We will continue to use an on-line management system for our Food Day school lunches. This on-line system will help reduce paper waste, reduce mistakes and volunteer time. Students and parents will be able to place their orders on-line and can also pay on-line using Visa, MasterCard or Interac. Please visit www.HealthyHunger.ca to see our Food Lunch dates and menus. Please go to the www.healthyhunger.ca website and follow the instruction on how to register your child or children. In order for your child to receive a lunch on this day you will have to register and order a week before the food lunch day. Please note that there will be no extra orders placed. The concession will be open with limited items. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Corlie Garaniti at [email protected].

PASS IT ON CLOTHING DRIVE Once again Christ the King School will be participating in the Pass It On Clothing Drive taking place in September. The drive has been a tremendous success over the last two years and we are hoping to meet if not exceed our donations this year. We are asking for donations of clean, gently used fall and winter clothing, in particular winter boots and coats. Any contributions that our Christ the King families can make would be greatly appreciated! Donations of clean, gently used clothing can be made at the office during the week of September 12th – 16th. We will require approximately 10 volunteers to help sort and bag donations on Wednesday, September 19th. Thank you to our parents who have volunteered their time already. Additional parents wanting to volunteer can email Kelly Roth at [email protected] We are always blessed by the generosity of our Christ the King families and we know this will be no exception. Thank you in advance for your support of this social justice project. Please see the poster attached to this newsletter for more information.

SCHOOL OPENING MASS

We are happy to offer our students the opportunity to celebrate mass and liturgies together whenever possible this school year. Our school opening mass will be celebrated on Wednesday September 14 at 10:00 at St. Albert the Great Parish. Bussing to the church will be provided for staff and students. Parents are encouraged to join us at the church as we celebrate and pray for a successful school year.

SCHOOL CONNECTS Christ the King School will continue our subscription to SchoolConnects Automated Notification Service. SchoolConnects can quickly deliver a wide variety of messages by phone, email and SMS text to parents and our staff. This too enhances communication within our school community and improve our emergency preparedness. We believe that consistent attendance is important to the academic success of students. We will be using SchoolConnects to notify you by phone whenever your child is absent from class. These phone calls are made to your home/cell phone in the

Page 14: September NEWSLETTER 2016Class lists for staggered entry will be distributed on Thursday, September 1st. SCHOOL HOURS Morning Kindergarten Elementary Junior High AM Entry Bell 8:55

14

morning/afternoon. We will also be using SchoolConnects to send announcements and emergency messages as required. These messages may go out at any time. Please make sure your contact phone numbers and email addresses are up to date with our office.

When you receive calls from the system, Call Display shows the phone number from the school or from the Calgary Catholic school district. When SchoolConnects reaches an answering machine, it plays the message twice in case the beginning is cut off.

FROM THE OFFICE Please call in to report any absences or lates to the main office @ 403-500-2119. This ensures student safety and facilitates attendance checks on a daily basis. Our office staff is required to contact parents of children who do not arrive at school without a parent phone call. It is critical you call the school. Thank you in advance for your support. The office requests that students and parents please make arrangements in the morning (before school) in regards to students being picked up or if they are to walk home. We also request that parents not phone the office to leave messages for their child (ren). The office is a very busy place and messages may be misplaced. Arrangements should be made the night before or before school starts. The office staff greatly appreciates your cooperation.

FAMILY VACATIONS As we begin the school year, many families may begin planning for family vacations. We respectfully ask that our families plan for holidays during school vacation time. The variety of learning that takes place within the classroom may not be available again, and ‘catch up’ worksheets do not offer the same rich learning experiences. Keeping in mind that planning a family vacation is not always possible during school vacation times, please consider that although your child’s teacher can give suggestions on how to incorporate some learning activities into your family vacation, teachers are not required to provide your child with a separate learning program while they are away. We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE FORMS The district has purchased blanket accident coverage for all students. There is an option available for parents to purchase additional coverage. Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. (IAP) will continue to offer optional coverage to students and parents at an additional cost. Parents will find information concerning the optional additional coverage in the school opening package.

AMBULANCE CALLS EMS will be called if a student’s health is at risk (injury or illness). All efforts will be made to contact parents/guardians or emergency contacts. Parents/guardians are eligible to claim for the cost of EMS services through the District purchased blanket accident insurance policy.

ENTRANCE/EXIT DOORS We ask that students NOT use the main entrance while entering or exiting the building, unless they are attending a practice or are late and reporting their arrival to the front office or are accompanied by a parent. Kindergarten children are permitted to use the front doors as their primary entrance and exit. All students meeting or picking up younger siblings are asked to make arrangements to meet at a location outside the school.

SCHOOL PARKING LOT In the interest of safety, the school parking lot is out of bounds at all times. Students are not permitted to walk through the parking lot before or after school as this presents an unsafe situation. Parents dropping off or picking up students must do so in the designated zones directly in front of the school. Please do not stop or park in the bus zone. Your close attention to the traffic signs will help to ensure that our children are safe.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL AND SECURITY

Parents and involved community members are welcome at Christ the King School. All parents and visitors to the school are required to enter by the front doors, register, and pick up a Visitor’s ID Tag at the main office prior to proceeding into the school. For the safety and protection of all students, all outside doors, except for the front doors will be locked during the day. The boot room entrances will be opened at 8:40 am. For security reasons, parents and visitors who are not volunteering are asked to refrain from entering classrooms or hallway areas during instructional times.

TRANSPORTATION

The bus routes for the 2016-2017 school year have been posted to the Calgary Catholic Board website (www.cssd.ab.ca/transportation). Please view website to find your child’s route. The transportation staff will be processing new applications and adding bus stops to routes on a first-come, first-served basis, based on when they receive your registration. The deadline for completing transportation registration was May 10, 2016, so anyone completing a form now is late. It could take up to two to three weeks for our transportation department to process any new registrations. Thank you for your patience.

The fee payment will NOT be requested or offered at the same time that parents submit the transportation registration form. Parents will now be asked to pay the transportation fee AFTER October 19, 2016, through to December 31, 2016. The transportation fee for 2016-2017 school year will be $270.00 per student, to a family maximum of $540.00 for a family of two children or more. You have the option to pay transportation fees for the 2016/2017 school year online (between Oct. 19/16 to Dec. 31/16. Payments can be made online by either credit card or debit card. To pay online, parents will need to access the fee management and online payment system located on the district Internet site. www.cssd.ab.ca

Notice to Parents: Parents can access student’s bus routes after August 15th by going to the CCSD district website, at: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/Parents/Transportation/SchedulesRoutes/Pages/default.aspx

1) Schedules & Routes: Scroll down to the list of school names and click on the one you are looking for. 2) A PDF document will pop up. It contains all the bus routes for that particular school. Scroll down the document to the

route which services areas and streets close to where you live. 3) Find the bus stop location that is closest to the student’s home and use this location for bus pick up and drop off. 4) Parents must orient their child to know which stop to get off at, at the end of the day. 5) Please be aware that the bus driver does not know the children or their appropriate bus stop. Parents of young

children are advised to provide information inside their child’s coat or backpack with the parents’ emergency numbers in case the child misses their bus stop and does not know where to get off. Children should be prepared to tell the bus driver their name in case the child forgets which stop they are supposed to get off at.

6) The bus company that transports your child is indicated at the top of the Route Schedule, along with their phone number. The route number is also located at the top of the Route Schedule. Please know this information in case you need to contact the bus company.

7) Bus Routes may change on an ongoing basis between August 15th and sometime in October. Before school starts, please check the website often to ensure the time and location of your child’s bus stop has not changed. Once school starts, the school will send home Route Updates if there are changes on your child’s particular route.

MONITORING STUDENT CONDUCT ON BUSES As we begin a new school year, it’s important to reflect on how students are expected to behave when on the bus traveling to and from school. As you likely know, our main bus carriers have had a difficult time hiring and retaining enough drivers to cover all of our routes. The Calgary Catholic School District wants to ensure that inappropriate student behavior isn’t contributing to this challenge. The district’s Student Conduct on Buses regulation contains protocols for students to follow while travelling on district provided transportation in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for riders and drivers. Adhering to these guidelines is an important way to foster a positive atmosphere on the buses for students and drivers. Please keep in mind:

The driver is in full charge of the bus and the driver’s directions must be obeyed.

While on the bus, students must conduct themselves in a quiet and courteous manner, showing consideration for the

comfort and safety of others.

Scuffling, fighting, smoking and the use of inappropriate language on the bus are prohibited.

Students must not distract the bus driver or move about the bus while it is in motion. Sitting on the bus seat facing

forward is what provides protection to students if the bus has to stop quickly.

Continued student violation of rules for conduct on school buses may lead to loss of riding privileges or further

disciplinary action. Principals determine the consequences.

It is also important that parents be aware of their own behavior around bus drivers, especially in front of children.

Bus companies do not permit adults to board the bus for safety reasons. The bus driver does not necessarily know if

the adult is a parent of a child on the bus or not, so they are trained to not allow adults on the bus.

Parents should communicate any issue with a bus driver through the school principal or vice principal.

If everyone keeps these guidelines in mind, it will make for a pleasant, safe and secure environment in which to transport students to and from school. For more information, please see the Student Conduct on Buses regulation (code: EEAEC) available on the district website or consult your school principal.

BUS PASSES / JUNIOR HIGH

For Junior High students to qualify for a reimbursement on their monthly bus passes they must live 2.4 km or more from Christ the King or designated school and a Transit Pass Rebate form for 2016-2017 school year must have been filled out and returned. Calgary Transit Pass Rebate Forms for 2016/2017 school year were sent home with students last May. If you have not received one, please contact the office.

Calgary Transit has advised us that there will be no “grace period” for students without Calgary Transit passes for the first 2 days of school this September. Therefore, students must purchase their September bus pass before the first day of school and have it ready to show the bus driver. If a bus pass has not been purchased, students will be expected to pay cash for their bus ride.

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES STUDENT GROUPS

Over the year, our school may establish a student group, which engages in discussion and activities related to diversity and justice issues, including support for students belonging to sexual minorities. In particular, within our Religious Education and Family Life Catholic Community of Caring program, students may provide leadership and receive support to continue to build inclusive communities, aligned with our Catholic social teachings. If you wish further information, please contact the principal.

SKATEBOARDS/LONG BOARDS/BIKES

As in previous years, we would like to inform our students they are welcome to use the above equipment as methods of transportation to and from school. To ensure student safety, these items are not permitted to be used on school property. Students must carry skateboards, long boards and scooters on school property and walk bicycles. Skateboards, long boards and scooters must be stored in student lockers while bicycles can be locked on the bicycle racks provided on the tarmac area.

AIR RIFLES/GUNS

The district prohibits students from possessing weapons or engaging in violent or threatening acts on school property, and at school sponsored functions and activities. "Weapon" means any object, device, or instrument designed or through its use is capable of threatening or producing bodily harm to oneself or others. By this definition, air rifles/guns are therefore considered weapons. As it is challenging to visually identify these weapons as air rifles/guns, school staff, Calgary Police Services and the

RCMP will likely respond in the same manner as they would an actual rifle/gun. For the safety of all students, staff and visitors in the school, these items are not allowed on school property or at school-related activities under any circumstance.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

School supplies information can be found on Christ the King website. www.cssd.ab.ca/christtheking Please visit the Parent section for supply lists for grades one through nine. Kindergarten supply lists will be handed out on September 1, 2016.

KISS ‘N’ GO

In the interest of safety, the school parking lot is OUT OF BOUNDS at all times. Parents dropping off or picking up students must do so in the designated zones directly in front of the school (not in the staff parking lot). Please do not stop or park in the bus zone. Our bus zone is located on Cranston Drive. It runs from the intersection of Cranston Way to the end of the core building Your attention to the signs will help to ensure that your children are safe. Parents are asked to drive safely within the school zone, slow down and to be aware of safe parking areas. Our patrols will continue to work diligently to ensure safe crossing for our students however we need the cooperation of drivers to ensure they are aware of safe driving practices. At Christ the King School Safety comes before Convenience! Safe traffic conditions around the school means safety for your children! To further ensure the safety of our students, we have developed a “Kiss ‘n’ Go" procedure we ask you follow when dropping off your children. A.M. Procedure:

1. Pull all the way up to the Kiss ‘n’ Go Zones on Cranston Drive and Cranston Way to drop of your child(ren). The Kiss’n’ Go Zones will be in effect from 8:30-9:00 am daily. Look for our signs.

2. Children go directly to the supervised school yard. 3. Continue your route along the outside of Kiss ‘n’ Go Zone exiting onto the street. NO U-TURNS. 4. Please do not park in the Kiss ‘n’ Go Zone.

SCHOOL PATROLS In order to keep our students as safe as possible on their way to and from school, we will be utilizing trained school safety patrollers to help students at designated crossing points. Our safety patrol teams will be out before and after school. We ask that parents help our patrollers by encouraging their children to choose safety over convenience, and cross only at the designated crossing zones. We thank you for your patience and cooperation!

SCHOOL AND PLAYGROUND ZONES REMINDER School Zones have been changed to Playground Zones throughout the city. Playground hours are in effect from 7:30 am – 9:00 pm daily.

LIBRARY PARENT VOLUNTEERS

The library would greatly appreciate some dedicated parent volunteers who can come in weekly to do shelving of books and various library jobs. Please email the Librarian if you are interested in volunteering for the 2016-2017 school year. [email protected] Librarian

SCHOOL LOCKERS & LOCKS Students in grade 6-9 are assigned individual lockers to store personal items. Locks can be purchased through the fee sheets sent home on the first day of school. Students may also bring cash or a cheque ($8.00) to purchase a lock during the first few days of school. Purchases can be made in the library at the beginning of each lunch hour.

BOKS IS BACK! Christ the King is very excited to be offering our students once again the BOKS (Build Our Kids Success) fitness and nutrition. BOKS operates under the philosophy active kids leads to active minds. Research has shown us that students who are active and involved in physical activity benefit intellectually, physically and emotionally. Exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to maximize the function of our brains. Last year we were able to offer the program to interested students in grades 1-6 before school with sessions for Div. I and sessions offered to Div. II. Over 50 students registered in each session with approximately 40 students attending each session on average. The program is a great way to set up participating students for a productive day of learning. The program is fully funded in partnership with the Reebok Canada Fitness Foundation, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Football League Association and PROPEL. Please keep an eye out for the date of our beginning session which will be offered to students in Div. I dependent on available gym space.

JUNIOR HIGH HONOR ROLL CRITERIA Academic success is recognized and celebrated at all levels of learning. At CTK it is our mandate that all students will succeed to the best of their ability based on individualized learning outcomes. Students, families and teachers regularly celebrate achievement of learning goals through ongoing recognition, praise and reinforcement. Academic success is also celebrated through the junior high honor roll. Calgary Catholic School district has supported the development of a process to create an honor roll report for Junior High Students within the PowerSchool Environment. This Honor Roll report will display those students whom have accomplished either the Honors with Distinction or Honor level. As a result there are some minor changes to the honor roll criteria beginning the 2016-2017 school year. These levels are determined based on the following criteria:

Student must have work habits greater than 2 in all classes

Student must have an overall average of 80% or greater for all classes to qualify for Honor Roll

Student must have an overall average of 90% or greater for all classes to qualify for Honors with Distinction

The grades are determined by the term mark entered into Historical Grades (cumulative).
