SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST OF THE MONTH
I was born and raised in Slaton,Texas. I tend to think of myself as “self taught" but there have been too many strong influences in my life to assume that I did it myself. I first began to draw, sitting in my Mother's lap when I was very small as she taught me how to sketch my favorite cartoon characters. I was surprised that my elementary teachers’ were not appreciative when I drew car-toon characters in the margins of my school work! When I was in Junior High, I sold comic books, which I had written and illus-trated, to my classmates on notebook paper. Along the way, I accrued a business manager, a fellow student and we split the profits to pay for treats at the school store.
As an adult, I became more serious and my wife Judy, as a gift, set up lessons in 1981 with Ernie Haring in Sherman, Texas who taught the use and application of professional watercolor, a medium which I fell in love with and never strayed from since.
In the late 80s and early 90s, I painted stage scenery for the annual 5th grade play for several years and won the Patron’s Choice Award for a watercolor painting sold to Oscar Meyer along with other awards at the Sherman Art League’s annual shows. During the 2000s, I began to build a catalogue of work for my website which I am still using today.
In 2008, Gabrielle Pruitt, my friend, professional photographer and gallery owner, gave me the opportunity of showing my work in a group setting, titled “Emerging Artists”, at her 14th Street Gallery in Plano, Texas. Retiring in 2012 after a long career with Veri-zon (GTE), I joined the Southwestern Watercolor Society and Texas Visual Arts Association. I was accepted in the TVAA Citation show during 2012 and 2013 and exhibited in the TVAA downtown gallery for 3 months in 2013.
2013 and 2014 found me concentrating more on the SWS and thoroughly enjoying the well organized Plein Air Paint Outs. The Southwestern Watercolor Society’s friendly and professional membership has made me feel right at home.
My wonderful wife of 41 years, although not an artist herself, has supported me without exception in all my art endeavors. She even supports me when she does not agree with my direction!
My great personal thrill is to see a subject that excites me, accomplish a work that projects that same excitement back, and then have that same painting strike a chord with another.

GAIL DELGER, McKinney, Texas. """"Inspired by the Southwestern Watercolor Society show some years ago, she knew she wanted to learn watercolor. Painting for 22 years and progressing from watercolor to experimenting in collage and acrylics, she eventually be-came President of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. "She likes painting the light and cast shadows on objects when painting in watercolor. Her whimsical and sometimes surreal subjects that make viewers smile work better for her when painted in acrylics. "She likes to come up with ideas from her head rather than using photos; when using acrylics she likes to scrape paint around on blank paper and look for her subjects to appear. Photos are still helpful for her as references when needed. "Gail says, “I was surprised and honored the first time I was accepted into AWS. I believed in myself even more af-ter that. AWS has always has been a top goal of mine, first to get accepted and then to get Signature.” ""
