Congratulations Environmental Services Team
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital tops the list of
the cleanest hospitals in Chicago. That’s according to
data from a recent Hospital Consumer Assessment of
Healthcare Providers and Systems survey published by
the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Lutheran General shared the top spot with 77 percent of
patients reporting that their room and bathroom were
“always” clean. Three other Advocate Health
Care hospitals were also among the top 10 cleanest
hospitals including Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical
Center, Advocate Trinity Hospital and Advocate Good
Samaritan Hospital.
The Illinois average of patients who reported their room
and bathroom were “always” clean is 74 percent; the
national average 73 percent. The results of the survey
were recently published in Becker’s Hospital Review.

you know these are challenging times for health care. The
new Affordable Care Act and the challenges of decreasing
volumes and revenue make this a particularly complicated
time for our industry. On Monday, October 20th, we will
have several local legislators participate in our 2014
Legislative Forum. Their interest in our organization, our
profession and health care issues is commendable. Please
join us for this important session.

Kudos for Quality
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital has become the first
hospital in Illinois to receive accreditation from the
American College of Radiology for our CT Lung Cancer
Screening Program. The program, started in March of
2013, has been extremely successful. So far,
approximately 100 patients have been screened with four
cancers detected.
The American Association of Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) has certified our
Cardiac Rehab Program for 2014. The ALGH Apheresis
and Collection Center is the only Illinois Donor Network
Collection Center to receive a Performance Leader award
from the National Marrow Donor Program.
Community Needs Assessment Survey
If you live in the Village of Niles, you’ll want to keep an eye
on your mailbox. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital,
Advocate Children’s Hospital, the Village of Niles and
numerous organizations and entities in Niles want you to
help them assess community health care needs. A
Community Needs Assessment survey will be included in
a special edition of the Village’s newsletter, Focus on
Niles.
This survey nicely overlaps with Advocate Lutheran
General Hospital’s partnership with the Village of Niles,”
says Paula Besler, Director of Community Relations at the
hospital. “It is wonderful to see how virtually the entire
community came together to craft a survey that will
address a wide scope of human needs. It is hoped that the
groups and agencies involved as well as the Village and
hospital can effectively act on the results to improve the
health needs of all citizens. It has been a true honor to
chair this project.”

THANK YOU: Annual School Supply Drive
During the month of August, our physicians, associates
and volunteers donated school supplies to help some of
our service area’s neediest children. THANK YOU. We
collected four big boxes of supplies!!! Your contribution of
new and usable school supplies will benefit local students
who don’t know the luxury and excitement of back-to-
school shopping.
The Service League Awarded Seven $1,000
Scholarships to College-bound Volunteers
The Service League is pleased to support the Kendall
Smith Scholarship Fund here at Advocate Lutheran
General Hospital. The fund is named after Kendall Smith,
a young, vibrant volunteer whose dream it was to become
a social worker for chronically ill children and adolescents.
Despite her fight, Kendall was not able to fulfill her lifelong
ambition, as she passed away in 2009 at age 19 from
complications of Cystic Fibrosis.
Each year, Kendall is remembered as the Service League
awards scholarships to current deserving college-bound
hospital volunteers. In June, the Service League, along
with Kendall’s mother, Elsa Rivera, had the pleasure of
awarding seven $1,000 scholarships during a lovely
ceremony and reception. During the event, scholarship
recipients shared their goals and dreams for the future with
board and family members.

website at
