By Lisa Olk, Glasgow Chamber Executive Director Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture will not be hosting the Saskatoon Police Pipes & Drums during the 2014 Glasgow Scotty Homecoming Festival weekend.

The band cancelled on the Chamber on August 25th saying that there were some issues regarding customs and the ivory on their pipes getting across the border. The band was not willing to take the chance and put their instruments in jeopardy to cross the border until the issues were resolved.

However, the Chamber has been trying to get a replacement band. We received a call last Friday and we can get the Miles City Caledonian Society to come and perform in the homecoming parade, Scotty Booster Tailgate party and half-time of the Scotty football game. They will

From our weather man Brian Burleson on the August climate report: “If I had to sum it up in one word — WET!” Indeed, the month of August was much wetter than normal. In fact, it was the wettest August on record and the fifth wettest month of all time. This was mainly due to a very slow moving storm system that brought record rainfall to the region from the 21st through 24th as 5.26 inches of rain fell during that time, making it the wettest four day period on record in Glasgow. For the month, 6.72 inches of rain fell which was 5.48 inches above normal. The monthly total breaks the old monthly rainfall record for August which was 5.74 inches in 1985. This past August also ranks as Glasgow’s fifth wettest month on record behind June 1950 (6.95), May 2011 (6.97), June 1906 (7.12) and June 1923 (10.29... suppose there was a major flood that year?!). The yearly total through the end of August now stands at 12.94 inches. August began 1.70 inches drier than normal but is now 3.80 inches wetter than normal.

OBITUARY Ron Selden

Ronald Selden, 58, of Glasgow, died Friday, August 29, 2014, near Fort Peck Reservoir. A loving father and loyal friend, he was born on May 13, 1956, in Corvallis, Oregon. He had a rich and varied life that gave him wonderful adventures that he would recount to his rapt family and friends. He was a talented writer and storyteller, which served him well as a reporter for the Missoulian, Great Falls Tribune and, later, as a freelance journalist for many publications, including Indian Country Today and the Missoula Independent. He had a strong sense of justice and strived to reveal the truth in every situation he covered. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1993. More recently, he went to work for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks in various positions until he ultimately took the position of public information officer for Region 6 of the department in Glasgow, where he made many friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed every place he lived in Montana and elsewhere. He took every opportunity he could to hike, fish, boat and hunt. He felt that he was truly at home and at peace while in the wilderness. Ron married twice in his life. In 1981, he began a common-law marriage with Lisa Fleischer, which they formalized in 1987. Together they had two daughters, Stella and Cecily. They divorced in 1995. Ron married Beth Brenneman in 1999. A unique soul, Ron was a very kind man with a deep love of family and friends. He will be greatly missed. Ron is survived by his daughters, Stella and Cecily Selden, and their mother, Lisa Fleischer; his wife, Beth Brenneman; father, Charles Selden (Sylvia); and his sister, Karen Addington (Marc). A memorial service and potluck meal will be held at the home of Frank and Janet Sucha, who are long and cherished friends of Ron and his family. It will be Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at 33647 Eagle Pass Trail, Charlo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ron’s name to Montana Conservation Voters or HiLine Youth Hockey, P.O. Box 933, Glasgow, MT 59230. For any questions about the memorial, please contact (406) 544-2613.

New government ban

No apology needed, Lisa! Despite the fact that African elephant ivory can be found in an array of older string, wind, and percussion instruments, there is no longer a demand for using elephant ivory to create new instruments. However, following a new Obama Administration effort to protect African elephants from poaching by combating illegal trade in ivory, the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) ordered strict enforcement procedures related to the Endangered Species Act and the African Elephant Conservation Act. According to a February 25, 2014 order, many instruments containing African elephant ivory would not be allowed into the U.S., even if a musician is simply returning to the U.S. with instruments in their personal possession, not intended for sale. And you didn’t think the President of the United States could shut down Glasgow’s Famous Pub Crawl!
