From the Pastor’s Desk Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “The Invisibility of the Poor and Needy…” My dear brethren we are celebrating the 26th Sunday in ordinary time. We are being
warned today to be careful how we live our lives in a more simple way. We should be
careful how we manage the resources God blessed us with. Life in abundance without
reference to the poor and needy is life without destination. The scripture today warns
against luxury-loving and not being concerned about our unfortunate fellow humans. We
should not presume there are not less privileged people in our midst. “Did you not know
that such poverty existed right here?” You should not wait to be told by another person that
poverty exists all around us. In the gospel, we read that the man’s eyes were opened too
late. Listen well, Abraham tells all who live luxuriously— “You have Moses and the
prophets, do we not?” Yes of course!
The rich man engages in conspicuous consumption. He feasts extravagantly every day. He
wears the finest clothes. Outside his home is a beggar named Lazarus. He is covered with
sores. He would be satisfied with the scraps that fall from the rich man’s table. The poor
man Lazarus is invisible to him. This is the problem in our contemporary world. The poor
are not seen, heard or considered when plans are made and reactions are considered. The
poor exit but they do not count. What they think, feel, and desire of hope is of no account.
We can ignore them without any qualms of conscience. continued on page 3
Desde el Escritorio del Pastor
Vegísimo-sexto Tiempo Ordinario
nuestros desafortunados seres humanos.
No debes esperar a

Lázaro espera a hacerse visible. ¡Nuestra
salvación depende de esta conciencia!
(Continued from page 1)
In the case of Lazarus, St. Luke tells us that the “dogs even
came and licked his sores.” Even the street animals are
sensitive to the needs of this beggar. Lazarus is not invisible
to the dogs. The dogs reached out to Lazarus more than the
rich man who continued to feast and make merry. However,
the rich man’s wealth and greed have fixed his eyes on the
visible and the immediate. At times, we, too continue to
search for more and more in hope that someday we will
have enough for security and peace.
In our contemporary world, we know that the poor too often
live in another world. They are not seen on the television
(except on documentaries which few watch and are soon
forgotten.) They are not used to selling products or tell you
how to invest your money. They do not have houses near
the sea, nor do they gather on beaches to play volleyball.
They live in unfinished buildings and houses made of mud.
The poor people do not live in big cities but rather in the
slum areas. To say it all, the poor remain invisible and
unreachable.
Amos today describes the luxurious living of his time and
blames the wealthy for not caring about the collapse of
Joseph. The “woe” of this message is addressed as God’s
word to the wealthy of all times and cultures. We should
bear in mind that Amos is not condemning the rich and
wealthy, rather the rich and the wealthy, who closed their
minds and hearts to the poor and needy that depended on
their wealth for survival. The Lord “gives” food to the
hungry,” but he needs our hands to distribute it. “Blessed is
he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the op-
pressed, gives food to the hungry!”
The connection between riches and the invisibility of the
poor is steeped in history. The prophet Amos is preaching
to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. The rich are complacent.
They take their ease and feast with no regard to the poor.
All the while, they are spiritually dead, they are spiritually
blind— “They are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!”
Nothing concerns them but their own selfish desires. But
the end of this is fast approaching. Exile awaits those who
are full and satisfied. “Wanton revelry shall come to an
end.”
My dear brothers and sisters, today in our world, we need
religious and political leaders who fit the job description
provided by St. Paul—“men of God that you seek after that
have integrity, piety, faith, love, steadfastness, and a gentle
spirit.” In our community (OLGC) and the entire world, we
are desperately in need of leaders who see their authority as
a trust from the “King of Kings and Lord of Lords!” We
need leaders who help us to see the needs of the poor. Such
leaders open our eyes and let us see that Lazarus still sits
waiting for the scraps from our table. Lazarus waits to be
made visible. Our salvation depends on this awareness!
