A Message from Mr. Ross... We are extremely proud of our students here at Riley St. for their commitment to learning and for their eorts in making our school a safe, friendly, and caring environment for all. The well-rounded student understands that in order to be successful they must strike a balance between the academic, extra- curricular, and social aspects of school. My hope is that after 5 short weeks, your child has found this balance and is feeling confident as we move into the month of October. Our stais dedicated to professional learning and continuous improvement. Spring 2019 M- STEP and PSAT 8/9 results arm our work as we performed between 6% - 27% higher than other middle schools in Ottawa county and across the state in tested subjects. While these results make us very proud, it also motivates us to “get better” in order to ensure that all students are experiencing academic growth year after year. We are continually striving to ensure that our students are educated, challenged, and inspired daily at Riley Street Middle School. One of our stagoals this year is to make sure every student hears a consistent message from the adults who work in this building. That message is… What we do here is important! You can do it! We will not give up on you! Middle schools are very unique places. The educators who work in middle schools must be content experts and a champion for every student. Please hold us accountable and encourage us as we attempt to meet this unique goal. In addition to supporting the learning needs of our students we continue to pursue social/ emotional capacity building opportunities for our students. To that end, resiliency educator, JeVeley , will be providing our students with tips and strategies for dealing with dominance behavior in the middle school setting. We invite all parents to join us on Monday, October 7th to hear this powerful message. School-wide assemblies will be taking place in the afternoon on this day. Please contact the oce for specific times and details. Book Fair is coming to RMS! ~ We are excited to announce that the RMS Media Center will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of November 18-22. Students will be able to browse and shop during the school day and it will be open for parents to shop Wednesday, November 20 during Parent-Teacher conference hours. The book fair helps us promote reading by providing an opportunity for students or parents to purchase books as well as an opportunity for our library and classrooms to earn free books. Don’t forget that books make great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers!

For your convenience, we also have an online book fair. You can preview some items that will be at the school book fair as well as shop online. The online fair is available from November 13 - November 26. Orders placed online will be shipped to RMS and our school will still benefit from those sales. Please visit our homepage for everything you need to know about our Book Fair, including shopping at the online fair and volunteer opportunities. You may also contact Mrs. Ihle at (616)896-1920 or via email: [email protected] with any questions. We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair!

Lunch Money ~ This is just a reminder to keep enough money in your student’s lunch account. Send a check or cash with your student and we will deposit it in his or her account. Remember to put your student’s first and last name on the check so it can be applied to the correct lunch account. Deposits can be made in the mail slot on the cafeteria door or at sendmoneytoschool.com. There are applications for free and reduced lunches available in the office or at lunchapp.com throughout the year.

Leaving School During the School Day ~ If a student must leave at any time during the school day, parents are asked to phone or write a note stating the reason for early dismissal and the time. Students should bring the note directly to the office before the school day begins for an early dismissal pass. This pass should be shown to their teacher at the beginning of the class from which they will be leaving. Students will not be dismissed with noncustodial parents unless we receive written permission from the custodial parent.

Should a student need to leave school due to sudden illness or injury, the student should come to the office. Students should NOT call home from their cell phone to be picked up if they are injured or ill. The office will call parents to pick up the student. Students will be signed out in the office before they leave.
