SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 2, September 27, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. The leaves on the trees have turned colours quite rapidly this past week. Fall has arrived. Hopefully our farmers get a string of dry days so that they can complete the harvest. Yesterday we made the decision to postpone the Terry Fox Run/Walk due to the mucky weather. The Run/Walk will occur Wednesday, October 2 nd after lunch. Last summer we installed a refrigerated and filtered water fountain near the gym entrance outside of the Main Gym entrance. There is a counter on the fountain that tracks the amount of water bottles that have been saved from landfills as a result of the use of the fountain. Over the past year we have saved over 20,000 water bottles by having staff and students fill their reuseable/refillable bottles at the fountain. We encourage our students to use this fountain rather than purchase a bottle of water from the machine. Important reminder to students and parents. Morning exercises begin at Souris School at 8:55 AM. Students are expected to be in their first class prior to that time. There is a warning bell at 8:50 AM. Students should begin to move to their classrooms at that time. Presently we have a number of students who are walking in the doors while the national anthem is playing or while announcements are being read. Time management is one the the most important “soft skills” that a person can develop. “Soft skills” is a term relating to a collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the employment market. We thank you for your anticipated support and cooperation regarding this issue. I would like to remind all parents to check the Student Portal for your son(s) and/or daughter(s) assessment and attendance information. In our opening mailout you would have received a sheet of paper with a username and password for each student. cleaned out, simply bring them to the drop off box in front of the office at Souris School. This collection will be ongoing all year. Thank you…from Mother Earth RESPECT PROGRAM Our Early and Middle Years staff and students have been involved in the implementation of a Respect Program in our school. The premise behind this program is that, as a school, we strive to provide a caring environment where each child can learn. Our Respect Program has replaced our previous “Greenslip Policy” and “StopCard Policy”. Our goal is to assist our students in developing the skills to be reflective of their behaviors; realize the impact that their behaviors may have on others; and provide them with the tools to make positive choices. We also hope to see a decrease in disrespectful behaviors with our students. Informational letters have been sent home to parents regarding our Respect Program, so parents, please be sure to ask your child for a copy of this letter. GRADE 7 & 8 VOLLEYBALL Permission/informational letters have been sent home with our players. Please be sure to check the schedule for game days and other information regarding our season. PARKING REMINDERS A friendly reminder to parents to please not park in the Early Years staff parking lot on the south end of the school when dropping off students or picking up students at the end of the day.

SHOUT OUT FOR BOOKS After doing some summer reading of my own, I am following up on a suggestion to reach out to the community to help stock my classroom library. Generally I am looking for any grade 6, 7, or 8-level books taking up space in your house that you might like to donate to the school. Specifically my class has mentioned the Percy Jackson series, the Wrush series, Maximum Ride, The Hardy Boys, and/or Scott Westerfeld and

Gary Paulson. •Thanks, Miss Birch!

GRADE 3-6 SOCCER JAMBOREE On Tuesday, October 1 all of the grade 3-6 students will be traveling to Hartney to participate in a soccer jamboree. The kids have been informed what color of shirt to wear. The games will run from 11-2 on the Hartney School grounds. There will be hot dogs and drinks available to purchase, however, we are encouraging our students to bring their own lunch and drink. Microwaves will not be available for our students to use. We also request that all students bring proper footwear for this event. All students will be back in time for buses. If your son/daughter has not yet brought in their soccer permission forms, please be sure they do so on Monday. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Penner, Mrs. Young, or Mrs. Rolfe. We look forward to a great day!

STUDENT ATTENDANCE The following was taken off a fact sheet from Program and Student Services Branch of Manitoba Education

Daily attendance is important for all students. Students who attend school regularly are more engaged in learning, have a greater sense of belonging in the community and are more likely to obtain a high school diploma. Attendance Facts: · If a student misses 2 days of school per month they will miss one month of school in the year. · If a student misses 15 days of school per year they will miss an entire year of school by their senior year. · If a student is 10 minutes late for class every day they will miss 6 days of instruction per year. Attendance and Employment: · Individuals without a high school diploma are twice as likely to be unemployed as those with a high school diploma. · Workers in Manitoba without a high school diploma make about $19,201.00 per year.

Dropping out of school is a process not an event. Students who drop out of school often begin the process of disengaging from school as early as grade 3. What the family can do: · Participate in school events like family fun night, open houses, special events like concerts, and celebrations of learning · Have a parent-child discussions about the importance of going to school every day · From the first day of school be consistent in your support for daily attendance · Talk to the school as soon as problems occur · Help your child get ready for school every day through such things as homework monitoring, regular bedtimes and planning for breakfast and lunches What the school can do: · Create trusting relationships among teachers, students and staff; and ensure that each child has a trusted adult in school · Communicate with families making sure they are informed about special events, positive calls to parents, and early conversation if there are concerns · Have high standards for all students and provide academic and social-emotional supports to all students · Support after-school programs to increase school bonding · Create welcoming environment for students and parents · Reward and acknowledge students for good attendance STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS: Welcome back everyone! This year we have decided to put monthly adverts in the newsletter to let you know what we’re up to on Student Council. This year’s Student Council consists of Jessie Robbins as

president, Niamh McKenna & Grant Jackson as VP’s, Tara Farmer as treasurer, Emma Boisvert as secretary, Andrea Robins as social convener and Alissa Swaenepoel as the media rep. The grade reps are Kendra Roberts, Madi Dodds, Adam Kowalchuk, Kaylee Butterfield, Zach Miner, Krystal Adams, Gina Williams and Hannah Cooke. As always, Mrs. Penner and Mrs. Delaurier help keep us all under control. This month has been pretty busy with all the buzz of being back at school but our planning for October has already started! We are putting together a costume and a pumpkin carving contest as well as collecting coats for Coats For Kids! Keep your eyes open for our updates in the newsletter to stay caught up with what we are up to! •Alissa Swaenepoel, Media Rep

CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels. Remember, both the label and UPC are needed. •Glenda McConnell
