September 25, 2016 In today’s parable, Jesus gets us to think about this question - who’s the true winner and loser in life - as we look at the life of the rich man and Lazarus. Who’s the Loser Now? On earth it appeared to be Lazarus. According to his earthly appearance most people would have pegged him to be a loser. How did Jesus portray him? Lazarus was a “beggar.” In the eyes of the world, Lazarus was just a waste of space, a loser. Then there was the rich man. In the eyes of the world - here was a winner. He was a successful and friendly businessman who supported the economy very nicely. Who was the winner and who was the loser? In the eyes of the world, the rich man was the winner. What made the rich man a loser in God’s sight? It wasn’t that he was rich. It was that his total life was consumed around how much he could get out of it -“eat, drink, and be merry.” If that’s all you live for, you’re a loser. Who’s the Loser Now? After death it was the Rich Man. When Jesus was put on the cross, what must the Jews have been thinking? “What a loser! What a fitting end to this phony! The “loser” in life ended up being an eternal winner! The rich man was eternally lost - stuck to burn in the fires of hell forever. Who was the loser now? Why did it work that way? God is illustrating an eternal truth of Ephesians 2, it is by GRACE you have been saved, through faith - it is the gift of God. Lazarus had absolutely nothing that he could really offer God. Questions: 1. How does they work judge success? 2. What makes one truly rich? 3. How do we become rich? “Who’s the Loser Now?” Luke 16:19-31 The mission of Zion Lutheran Church is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through Word and Sacrament, encouraging and supporting one another as a fellowship of believers. In May, we began a Summer Giving Challenge to beat the 2015 giving. If we were able to beat that giving, a donor was willing to match anything over last year up to $15,000. The stats are as follows:

2015 Giving for May - Aug $167,884 2016 Giving for May - Aug $168,099 This is an increase of $ 215.00

Although this was not a huge increase, it was an increase that we should praise God for. In addition, it

is necessary to point out that our attendance per Sunday was down this year in comparison to last year

over the summer months by over 10%. Therefore, despite the fact that our attendance was down, we

were still able to maintain and increase our offerings. Thank you to our dedicated givers!

New

Bible Study

Will be offered this fall! We are both pleased and excited to be able to offer a wonderful opportunity for spiritual growth beginning in October. God in His Holy Word encourages us to “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18) Accordingly, this is something that we all earnestly desire! As one hymnist wrote “Just a Closer Walk with Thee grant it Jesus is my plea.” This is a wonderful time to immerse yourself in the study of God’s Holy Word. Please know that everyone is welcome, young or old, male or female. If you desire to grow in your faith, you are invited.

Each week we will spend time in God’s Word, in discussion and in prayer. If the group is willing, a potluck salad luncheon could follow. We are considering the possibility of meeting late morning on M o n d a y s a n d / o r Thursdays. Additionally, if there is enough interest, an evening class might be added as well. This Bible study will be led by Pastor Zellers.

These series that we will be using as a guide comes from our Synod’s own “Concordia Publishing House” and is entitled “LifeLight”. This fall we will be studying the Epistle of 1st Peter. Please accept this open invitation to corporately study God’s Holy Word and plan to attend as we grow together in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! If you are interested, register with Gayle or Michele in the church office.

Grades 9-12 and young adults are invited to join us for a day trip to Medora.

We will drive through Theodore Roosevelt National Park and hike a few

different trails. Lunch will be provided by the church, but participants need to

bring money for supper. Transportation is free of charge!

In order to make travel arrangements, we need to know how may people will be

joining us. Please sign up outside the church office by October 12th, or text

Kristin 400-2069. We are hoping to take the church van & fill it with people!

The plan is to leave the church at 8:30 am, hike and sight see for the

afternoon, have supper in Dickinson, and return around 9:00 pm.

Announcements regarding the youth program will be sent out via Snapchat

or Instagram. If you would like to be added to the list, please let me know.
