ldquoBe at peace with your own soul then heaven and earth will be at peace with yourdquo

With all the violence in the world and the suffering due to natural disasters peace seems more of a hope than a reality Finding inner peace in a world filled with war and hate can be quite difficult Often times we find our soul in a state of unrest as we reflect on the current events Though external events can have a great influence on the state of our soul often times we have little control over what happens around the world However sometimes the unrest comes from within the soul itself In this case it is more within our capacity to control and with the proper amount of prayer silence spiritual direction and discernment with Godrsquos help our soul can finally be at peace We may experience unrest because of a past decision we regret making or because of a future decision we are uncertain about Whatever the reason it is likely that at some point in our lives we will all experience some point of spiritual unrest Reflecting upon history it is unlikely that the world will ever fully be at peace but if we first seek to be at peace with our own soul we will be better equipped to spread peace throughout the world If you would like to learn more about St Jerome Doctor of the Church and Bible scholar please visit httpswwwewtncomsaintsholysaintsJstjeromeasp Amanda Gronemeyer OLL Outreach Coordinator

Scriptures Is 556-9 Phil 120c-24 Matt 201-16a

I was recently struck by a line I read ldquoLove me when I am least loveable because that is when I most need your loverdquo Irsquove been haunted by those words It is a challenge to love the unlovable ones I often get caught up in my human weaknesses of jealousy a need for fairness and misunderstanding and distrust Sometimes I have to admit that I am the unlovable one in need of someone elsersquos love even when I donrsquot deserve it That is a tough realization

I was still reflecting on this when I read todayrsquos Gospel When I was younger I was troubled by this parable It simply didnrsquot seem fair or just that this landowner would pay everyone the same wage when some had toiled much longer than others Some of you have maybe felt that way at times In our human insecurity we want people to earn things We want people to be treated equally We want our fair share And we so often donrsquot want other people to get more than they deserve

And yet I have a growing appreciation for this parable This landowner didnrsquot cheat anyone He simply was extra generous to somehellipperhaps out of pity perhaps out of a sense of compassion for workers who needed to support their families as much as the early-morning workers did perhaps out of love or for any number of other reasons

I think about what our world would be like if we all acted out of the generosity of the landowner and not out of the jealousy of the early workers What if we could all be happy at other peoplersquos good fortune What if we could all be exceptionally generous What if we could all rejoice when people are blessed with things they donrsquot deserve What if we could all reach out with love compassion and forgiveness precisely when it is hardest to do so What if we could really love others when they are the most unworthy What if we could feel truly loved when we are the most unworthy

God loves us like that We are all called to love like that I know that I am a better person when I am able to follow that example

ldquoBe at peace with your own soul then heaven and earth will be at peace with yourdquo
