COWICHAN VALLEY

HOME EXPO(NC) As the days grow shorter, it’s time to

think about preparing your yard, gutters, windows, roof and heating system for the coming winter. Check these essentials off your list and you will be fi nished in no time:

Yard

Rodents and ants like to hide in piles of leaves or wood near houses. These should be removed to prevent pests from coming inside, especially in the absence of anti-rodent trim.

Plants and perennial shrubs should be cut and covered to protect against the weather. Cover your pool to prevent debris from accumulating, especially when leaves begin to fall. Patio furniture should be put away.Garden hoses and yard taps should be turned off ; don’t forget to drain them as any remaining water may freeze and cause them to burst.

Gutters

It’s important to ensure that rain gutters are unobstructed. Blockages can lead to serious water infi ltration. Keep in mind that water tends to travel back up to the roof, or fall near the foundations. The accumulation of leaves and debris is the main cause of clogged gutters.

Install gutter protection like the Gutter Clean System. This particular type reduces gutter maintenance while preventing water infi ltration caused by clogs.

Windows

Remove and wash window screens to increase brightness in the absence of sunlight. To improve your windows’ insulating performance, try installing weather-stripping fi lm.

To prevent water and cold air infi ltration, make sure all weather-stripping is waterproof. If your home has skylights, make sure they are sealed and protected against leaks.

Roof and Chimney

Make sure your roof is in good condition and that any damaged shingles are replaced or repaired as failing to do so could result in serious water infi ltration.

If your chimney was not swept in the spring, have it done in the fall as it is important to reduce the risk of obstruction associated with creosote build-up.

Heating System

Fall is the perfect time to clean your heating system so you can prevent odours and ensure that things will continue to work smoothly. Stock up on fuel as well, such as wood and oil. If your home is equipped with electric baseboards, simply wash them. If you have a furnace, be sure to clean or replace the air fi lter, as needed.

If you have an air exchanger, that fi lter should be cleaned or replaced as well. Vents in the home should be cleaned throughout the winter to keep them working smoothly. Be sure to check the screens as vents can sometimes be home to small rodents.

More information to assist your indoor and outdoor home maintenance practices is available online at alu-rex.com.www.newscanada.com

Get your property ready for fall with these quick tips

As you fl ip through the glossy pages of design magazines, there are countless images of expertly-designed homes that are decorated in a way that seems to fl ow seamlessly from room to room. This is because designers consider each room in terms of its relation to another and choose colours that work together in harmony. But if you want to bring your walls to life, consider the following when picking colours for your home:What is the mood you want the space to refl ect?

Depending on whether you choose warm, neutral or cool colours, you can create a space that helps to set a particular mood. Warm tones create a space that is inviting and gives off a positive energy. Neutrals create a space that is cozy yet balanced as they complement various looks and stay relevant over time. Cool colours create a space that is relaxing and provide styling

options for either an urban or coastal feel. What is your personal sensibility - bold, balanced or subtle?

To create a bold space, combine colours in the same family – such as red and pink – but separate them with a clean and crisp neutral. For a balanced space, create a single accent wall featuring a saturated colour and surround it with more neutral tones. In a subtle space, use shades that are similar in tone and intensity. For this kind of room, use accent pieces to keep it on trend and in style.Great design should refl ect the homeowner’s personality and should be more fun than diffi cult. HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams has compiled 16-designer inspired colour collections to take the guesswork out of picking a cohesive colour palette for any home and style.

How to get a designer-inspired home without the designer cost

A crisp breeze and falling leaves are a tell-tale sign that the holidays are just around the corner. The holidays are a time for entertain-ing, making it a great time to redecorate. Here, Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore Colour & De-sign Expert, shares her tips on how to refresh your home in time for the holidays.Pick a Functional and Festive Palette: Create a welcoming atmosphere with paint to make your guests feel at home. “When people think of holiday palettes, they think of traditional candy apple reds and forest greens. But don’t limit yourself to these – there are modern options that will work all year long,” explains Grech. “Bold colour statements like Raspberry Glacé CSP-430 or Antiqued Aqua CSP-705 are stunning options that work beautifully.”Fix Your Focal Points: ‘Tis the season for en-tertaining and hosting, so consider refreshing

rooms and areas that will be seen by guests. If you have a fi replace, the mantel is a popular focal point during the holidays. To make sure it looks its best, try giving it a fresh coat of paint. Grech recommends a durable paint such as Advance Waterborne Alkyd Paint by Benjamin Moore.“Painting an accent wall in the dining room, powder room or guest bedroom can also brighten up your home’s décor and is a quick and aff ordable way to update rooms frequent-ed by guests,” says Grech. It’s All in the Details: Use your creativity to put the fi nishing touches on your holiday dé-cor with some DIY. You can enjoy a fun family activity by using leftover paint on tree decora-tions or on pinecones for a rustic inspired centerpiece.Additional info. www.BenjaminMoore.ca.
