OOPS ! Acting President Harry forgot something – Oh yes,lets introduce visiting Rotarians and guests. didthe honors and reminded Harry that it had only been one weekago that he had been doing the introductions.

There was no true recognition ($$$), however, Acting Presi-dent Harry did mention that might consider havinghis Rotary picture re-taken. The ones up front for preview did notdo him justice.

Program chair, , introduced , CEOof Contraband Control Special-ists. Gary’s topic was “DrugAbuse – Streets to Workplace”.Gary gave a brief background ofhis work with the Sheriff’s depart-ment. He became an undercoveroilfield investigator because ofthe many thefts occurring in thatindustry. In addition to the thefts,he also identified safety issuesand drug and alcohol use asproblems. He felt that the theftsand the safety concerns werelargely due to the drug and

alcohol problems.Gary described the most popular drugs today and refuted

the idea of marijuana as an entry drug. Instead, things found inthe home are the first drugs that children find. Alcohol is still the“drug of choice”; however, 80% do not drink to get drunk. Thatis not the case with marijuana or other drugs.

“When did the war begin?” In the 1970’s, workplace issuesemerged: accidents, thefts, performance and quality problems.A partnership was formed with law enforcement and the oilindustry. Kern County had the first industry-wide effort to dealwith drug use.

The formula for success in the workplace includes policy,procedures, training, enforcement, collection, testing, disciplineand audit reviews. Line supervisors are instrumental in makingthe testing program a success.

additional new hire/introductory employee period testing (forthose who have figured out how to wait out the safe time framefor pre-employment testing). Although many employees havebeen asked to leave the industry through the enforcement ofdrug policies, 82-85% of employees believe in the policies andwant to see improvements in the work place.

Harry brought the meeting to a close and Mother Nature wasrocking and rolling with the great job he did.
