ASHRAE’s Leadership is composed of a Board of Directors, Executive Council, Member Council,

Technology Council, and Publication & Education Council. ASHRAE’s committee structure is the

mechanism that makes the society run. Through this structure, members formulate policies, develop

procedures, direct society activities and promote the society to be an Education & Learning Institute.

How ASHRAE society is a Learning Institute & Why?

ASHRAE writes standards and guidelines in its fields of expertise to guide the industry in the

delivery of goods and services to the public. ASHRAE standards and guidelines include

uniform methods of testing for rating purposes, description for recommended practices in

designing and installing equipment and other information to guide the industry. ASHRAE

has some 87 active standards and guidelines project committees, addressing such broad areas

as indoor air quality, thermal comfort, energy conservation in buildings, reducing refrigerant

emissions and the designation and safety classification of refrigerants.

We always encounter deficient fan performance after installation, the first question comes in mind

“Proposed fan under sized or wrong Fan rpm” but practically it is just opposite, not always 100% but yes

90% cases are the same.

There is a terminology called “System Effect Factor”, as per AMCA 201-02, after calculating all ESP, we

should always check the system & the fan location, if 100% EDL (Effective duct length) not maintained

before & after the fan, we should add system effect factor (SEF) to the calculated system pressure losses

to determine the actual system loss, below one graph to show the actual deficiency.

So what should be the rule of thumb?

• Minimum 2.5 duct diameters on Outlet

• Minimum 3 to 5 duct diameters on Inlet

• Avoid inlet swirl

• Allow enough space in the building design to allow for appropriate fan connections to the system

• Use allowances in the design calculations when space or other factors dictate less than optimum

arrangement of the fan outlet and inlet connections

• Include adequate allowance for the effect of all accessories and appurtenances on the

performance of the system and the fan

NEW OPERATION TRAINING

New HVAC Design & Operation Training coming to Atlanta

ASHRAE is offering the new Improving Existing Building Operation training on August 18–19, 2016 at

Headquarters in Atlanta. This interactive course provides the fundamental and technical knowledge for

the proper operation and maintenance of existing HVAC systems to maximize building performance.

Learn the techniques needed to measure existing building performance to make commercial facilities

operate more efficiently and economically.

NEW ANSI ACCREDITATIONS

Three ASHRAE certifications have received accreditation from the American National Standards

Institute (ANSI), joining the High Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification

that was accredited last year. Accreditation was approved May 23 for ASHRAE's Building Energy

Assessment Professional (BEAP), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and

Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP) under International Organization for

Standardization (ISO)/ International Electro technical Commission (IEC) 17024:2012.

ASHRAE JOURNAL

Hospitals use two to three times more energy than other commercial buildings. Two articles in this

month’s issue tackle ventilation in hospitals. The first examines best practices for determining the

airflow path in patient rooms, and the second explores the evolution of health-care ventilation.
