Built in 1940 for the Pennsylvania Railroad, this car was used to transport bulky and heavy industrial loads, such as large dimensional loads, electrical transformers, and construction equipment, with the depressed center allowing for a few feet of additional vertical clearance.

This 39’ single dome tank car is grey with black lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1941, with 100,000-pound capacity this car was used in a MOW capacity, holding lubricating oil for locomotives. Used through the late 1970s, it was eventually sidelined. Alaska Railroad is a Class II railroad that was founded in 1914, and currently runs between Seward and Fairbanks along 656 miles of track.

This 61’ bulkhead flat car is brown with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in in 1964 this car featured a 61’ internal deck length and capacity of 90 tons. Used for bulky loads, it was often used to carry lumber, structural steel and pipes, as well as logs and other long commodities. The reinforced bulkheads provide load protection as well as prevent shifting during transit.

Built in 1945 as 40’ cars, they were later rebuilt into a 50’ cars featuring DF loaders, joining Class XMLc. Reading can be traced back to 1833 as the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, one of the first railroads in the United States. Over time it became just ‘Reading,’ and remained profitable through World War I. By the 1960s, declining profits lead to bankruptcy in 1971. In 1976, the remaining assets were merged with other railroads to form Conrail.
