Hi all. Well, in lock down still!
Don’t know how you are all
coping but it is really starting to
irritate me. This virus is having
and will have an enormous effect
on us all in ways we have not
even thought about. That’s
enough negativity. In listening to
our premier last Sunday, I
thought it was going to be a long,
long time before we could open
again but maybe it will be sooner
than I anticipated, fingers
crossed. Our Zoom AGM was a
great success. We are very
fortunate to have someone with
Emily’s expertise on the
committee, thanks Emily. I
would also like to thank the three

Being Safe with Wood
due. It goes without saying just how
important the club is to us all, and
the coming year is going to be quite
hard financially.
Emily has started producing a small
bi-monthly newsletter for us. The
idea is to share some photos and
videos just to keep the interest levels
up. As I said the second one is small
and will basically only be photos
and links to videos, this is a big
effort from Emily and we all should
support her by sending her photos
and videos so she does not have to
go looking for them. Just a little side
note, the last time I was talking to
Emily she looked up other woodies
clubs and found we are the only
It’s always important to make sure we are aware of the toxicity of
the wood that we work with. In the coming newsletters, there will be
a focus on woods in alphabetical order. This month it’s the letter ‘A’.
Remember to always be safe and wear protective gear!

A Year in Review club with a YouTube channel. This
means we are the only club that can
have a newsletter with links that
take you to a video. To me this is
something we can all be proud of,
and know our club is a leader in
this field.
At the time of writing this, the
committee is about to have another
zoom committee meeting (Monday
14th). There was some discussion
about having a general meeting on
zoom. This may well be a great idea,
it would need to be an informal
meeting but it could be interesting to
hear what everyone has been up to.

Increasing Moisture in Your Wood
The easiest way to increase the moisture content in
your wood is to get yourself a cooler with a lid.
Place an open pot of boiling water and your wood on
edge inside the cooler. Put the lid on the cooler and
let it sit overnight. In the morning, the moisture
content in the wood will have increased quite a bit
and it will carve nicely.
It’s possible to increase the moisture as you carve
by spot spraying the wood with a 50/50 mixture of
water and rubbing alcohol. This won’t penetrate the
wood as much as the previous cooler method but it
will help relieve some of the dryness.
