Greetings From Pastor Jim McClain

2/September 2019 Windcrestumc.org

Bible Study With the Pastor People often ask me for various 101 level classes. They may be interested in Church Membership 101, United Methodism 101 or Windcrest 101. All of these and more can be found in Disciple Bible Study. Each year I teach the intro class of the Disciple Bible Study Series. The course is designed to work through all the major portions of the Bible in 34 weeks. Questions relating to “What are the beliefs of the United Methodist Church?”, How is the Church structured?”, “What do others at Windcrest believe about this?”, “How did the founders of the Methodist Church interpret this?”, “What do other denominations say?”, “What do we believe about this, God, the Bible and Jesus?”, and other questions often come up as part of the study. People who take the time to participate in Disciple Bible Study want more that sim-ple one-line answers. They realize that the questions are relevant to the class, their day to day lives, and their relation-ship with God. Like most things of value, Disciple takes time and commitment. The class will meet once a week for 2 ½ hours with read-ing assignments each week. Ask someone who has taken the study about it. Most students who complete the class con-tinue their studies with one of the other three Disciple Bible Study classes offered. I want to accommodate as many people as desire to walk with me through this wonderful exploration of God’s self-revelation as we can. Let me know if you are interested, what days of the week you can come, and what time of day works best for you. Be especially clear if there are times or days that will not work for some reason. You may have par-ticipated in the study before and would like to again. That’s great. Maybe you took it in another church or with another pastor. You could have a friend who wants to learn but doesn’t want to take it by themselves. Would you be willing to be that encouragement? It is possible your life situation has changed and you have new questions. Let me know if you are interested and what day of the week and time of day works best for you. I am going to try to keep each class to about 12 people. That seems to work best. It worked well for Jesus. There are other classes offered if you have already taken the intro class and want to go even deeper into the scriptures. Let the church office know which classes you have completed. We will try to put one of the other classes together for you. Again, let us know which days and times are best and which will not work. Once we gather all this information, we will offer a couple of suggestions for class dates and times. You will find in this newsletter a form that you can fill out. Feel free to email the information to [email protected] or bring the completed form to the church office. Forms were in the Sunday bulletins for a couple of weeks in August. If you have any questions or cannot commit your schedule through May, let us know that too. Orientation for the intro Disciple class will be 5:00 pm, Sunday, September 8, 2019 in Bayless Hall and should last about an hour. The day and time for the classes will be finalized then. Other classes will have their orientation later. The final Disciple Intro class is scheduled for the week before Pentecost, the church’s birthday. See You Sunday, Jim Reverend Jim McClain [email protected]

Altar Flowers – Online Ordering

Each week members are given the opportunity to sponsor a beautiful flower arrangement for our worship services on Sunday mornings. The flowers are often given in memory of a loved one, in honor of someone special, or on a special occasion. A sign-up book is available in the Gathering Place to place the order and write in the information. But, did you know that you can now order your altar flowers online? That’s right! Just go to our church website, www.windcrestumc.org, go to “About Us,” click on the “Altar Flowers Order Form,” and complete the form. You will have the option to pay online, or there are other payment options. It’s just that simple! Now you can order flowers any day of the week from the comfort of your home, office, or on your smart phone. If you have any questions, just call or email us at the church office 210-654-0404.

Please pardon the mess The Gathering Place restrooms are under construction until further notice. We have additional restrooms in the Day School and in the Hilliard Building. Please ask an usher for the nearest available restrooms. Thank you for your patience.

Welcome to your new spiritual home!

Please take a moment to welcome our new WUMC members.

The Nightwatch Wind Quintet of the USAF Band of the West will be presenting a concert in the WUMC Sanctuary at 2:00 pm Saturday September 7, 2019

Nightwatch is the newest musical team from the United States Air Force Band of the West. Typically, a woodwind quartet, Nightwatch’s diversity of musicians and flexible instrumentation has led them to surprise and connect with their audiences in unique ways. Their mission is to honor military heritage through music, connect with the American public and inspire patriotism and excellence with all that they perform for. Nightwatch’s versatility enables them to perform classic chamber music, such as Mozart and Bach, jazz favorites, such as Gershwin, and transcriptions of contemporary works, such as music from the television series Game of Thrones. These world-class musicians provide a wide variety of musical support focusing on building partnerships within the communities they perform. Whether it is a military ceremony or an educational or community engagement, Nightwatch will make help make the event remarkable for all who attend.

Declutter Time!

In a facility with a serious shortage of storage space, it is important to be organized and to keep the clutter and “stuff” at a minimum! Pastor Jim’s recent sermon on “Stuff” just accentuated the need to get our “stuff” in order! So, to all ministry groups – your new assignment is to gather your volunteers and go through any storage closets and areas you are currently using here at the church. Make sure you aren’t holding onto stuff that can go away and be someone else’s treasure! The church Fall Bazaar is on Saturday, October 19, 2019 and the United Methodist Women will once again be sponsoring the rummage sale. Or, you can pay for a space in the parking lot and sell your stuff. Or, you may want to donate your stuff to one of the ministries we support. Please use the next few weeks, making sure that you are making the best use of the storage space provided to you. In time, a church-wide cleaning and declutter day will be set and your space may be cleaned if you haven’t already taken care of it. If you have any questions, please contact Marcy at the church office. Thanks!

Our New Guide Book & Directory is Here!

By this time you should have received your new Guide Book & Directory in your mailbox. If you haven’t, please contact the church office or drop by and pick one up. The advertisers helped provide this service at no cost to our congregation. We encourage you to think of them in the future as your needs arise. Please familiarize yourself with the ministries and organizations at our church located in the front of the book. An electronic PDF version of the Guide Section of the book which you can download to your computer, smart phone, or tablet is available for download at your convenience. To download the Online Guide Section: 1. Visit www.GuideBookPublishing.com/booklist.php 2. Click on our state followed by our city 3. Click on the name of our congregation to download the book 4. To view the member directory portion, you will need the

username and password. Call or email the church office to ob-tain that information.

Windcrest United Methodist Women

6/September 2019 Windcrestumc.org

One of the issues that United Methodist Women strive to work towards is that of Climate Justice. And one of the Climate Justice issues Windcrest United Methodist Women have chosen to focus on is that of finding ways to recycle items and materials so that they don’t

land up in landfills and poison our air and earth. Specifically, we are collecting ink and toner cartridges, old phones, etc. These are taken to a company who recycles these into refillable cartridges and other useable items. In turn we receive monies for turning these items in and then the monies received are used for our UMW mission projects.

Ink and toner cartridges are made of plastic, if they are put into a landfill it can take between 500 to 1000 years for it to decay. Eventually, there may not be much space for the nearly 300 million cartridges that are used in the United States every year. Also, another damaging effect of not properly disposing of ink cartridges is that the toner (carbon black) has been classified as a potential carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

When the ink and toner cartridges are recycled, they do not end up wasting away in a landfill.

Since 97% of the material in the cartridges can be recycled, it means that there is less waste in the landfills, less energy is being consumed and there is less pollution put into the air by the plants that have to make new cartridges. It is another good example of how everyone can go green and how we can help save this earth that God has given us to take care of.

Please, help by bringing in your recyclable items. There is a box to put these in by the Connection Center. See Pat Ridenour or one of the United Methodist Women.

Marilyn Olivarez, Social Action Coordinator WUMW

Mental Health Awareness Sunday

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month; a time to share resources and shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. UMW & UMM have chosen to use this month to reach out and raise awareness about mental health through education and suicide prevention efforts.

We are hosting several healthcare agencies in Bayless Hall from 8:30 to 1:00 pm. These are organizations that deal with various issues from the impact of Alzheimer’s disease; caregiver stress and fatigue, to major depressive disorder and bi-polar disease. We can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide because just one conversation can change a life.

EVERYONE IS INVITED! UMM/UMW Pot Luck Luncheon Sunday, Sept 8, 2019, 12:00 – 2:00 pm in Bayless Hall In conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Sunday, please join with us at this event! Linda Matthews will have an interesting and informative program educating us on how Faith Communities can aid in ending the stigma surrounding mental health. Awareness of the situation will help us have a better understanding of how we can all help. So please come out – bring a dish if you’d like to - visit with the many health agencies represented - and enjoy the fellowship!

Windcrest UMC Food Pantry Ministry In an effort to keep the Windcrest UMC pantry sufficiently stocked, we are asking for the following donations each month. These donations are then used to fill bags of these basic items which are kept in the office and given out to peo-ple when they are in immediate need of help—thus providing the only food they will have to eat.

First Sunday – Jelly Second Sunday – Soup Third Sunday – Pasta Fourth Sunday – Canned meat Fifth Sunday – Canned Chili

If you feel led to help out, please consider these donations when you are out doing your grocery shopping. We will have a table or cart in the Gathering Place each Sunday to collect the items and stock the shelves of the pantry. Thank you so much for your help and support of our Neighbors Helping Neighbors ministry. Volunteer(s) Needed to help with the UMC Food Pantry; if interested in helping please call the church office 210-654-0404. Thank you.

WUMC Meet and Greet

The objective is not to feed people breakfast; rather it is simply to share a treat, a cup of coffee, and an opportunity

to Meet and Greet others in the congregation or guests who are visiting our church. We have two breaks between

services: 9:00-9:30 am and 10:30-11:00 am. You may volunteer as an individual, as part of a group, a Sunday

School class, or other organization. Consider making it a celebration of a special occasion or in memory of a loved

one. Again thank you for your contribution to this important ministry.

Feel free to contact me for more information: [email protected] Thank you.

Windcrest Mission Focus Cold Weather Shelter (CWS)

This ministry began in 2000 at Bethany UMC on Eisenhauer near I-35. It provides our homeless neighbors a safe place to get out

of the cold when temperatures reach 32 F and below.

They also provide:

A warm appetizer at check in at 5 pm

A Laundry and showers

A clothing pantry

A hot meal at 7 pm

Breakfast and a sack lunch to go

The neighbors are gone by 8 am. Each winter, the number of days the shelter is open depends on how cold the weather is. Last year it was only open 4 times with 30-40 clients each time.

Bethany UMC is a small church so any donations help keep this ministry going. They need a commercial washer and dryer to replace their old ones. They always need men's white socks, gloves, hats (darker colors), paper back books and magazine, men's jean, general assortment of clothes, warm jackets; laundry detergent, paper plates, bowls, plastic utensils, toilet tissue and paper towels.

Currently, Sophia London is the CWS Coordinator. You can reach her at [email protected].

If you would like to help, write your check to Windcrest UMC and mark it Cold Weather Shelter or CWS.

Offerings during Sunday School

We encourage you to talk to your child about bringing an offering to Sunday School each week. This is an excellent way to help your child form a good habit of "giving back" to God. A time will be set aside during class each week to pray over and recognize the offerings received. Each week, it will be handed over to support our church's Mission of the Month. Parents: please help your children understand the importance of contributing to the mission and ministries of their church by taking a minute to explain the process to them. We believe that the act of financial giving is an important part of the faith journey that Christians walk throughout their lives. Being generous with our blessings is a spiritual act that is encouraged in the Bible. With your help our children will start to see their donations as a way of taking ownership in our churches amazing ministries and programs. Remember: There is no amount that is too small! :)

Children in Worship

Children are welcome at all of our worship services. A special Children’s Message is given at the 8:15 and 11:00 service. Check out the Children's Worship Supplies located in just inside the Sanctuary to the left. It is stocked full of coloring and activity sheets that relate to the Scripture readings, fun "sermon notes" for active learning and other fun items for those needing something to fidget with during the service. There are also a few baskets located in the back full of clipboards with activities. Spending time in worship is important for little ones, but if you are looking for a little more wiggle room, the Nursery is open for children for children 5 years and younger during the 8:15/11:00. Sunday School is available during the 9:30 service for all ages.

THANK YOU for sharing your child with us each Sunday.

Mandatory Acolyte Training

More than just lighting a candle….acolytes are an important part in the worship services at Windcrest United Methodist Church. For years, light and fire have reminded people that God is here with us. When an acolyte carries the light into the place where people are gathering to worship, they are reminding people that God is with us. And when the acolyte carries the light out they remind us that God goes with us to our home, our work, or our school. Children & Youth in 3rd and older are encouraged to participate in the worship service by becoming an acolyte. Acolyte Training is Sunday, September 29th from 12-1pm. Lunch will be provided. Meet in Bayless Hall. You will be dismissed from the Sanctuary.
