S !"#$% $" G''! W' !!

The word stewardship is a good word! It stands for financial stability and opportunity for involvement. At the writing of this article an internal audit team is working on the other side of the office to do an annual church financial audit. This is a good thing. They review financial procedures and the processing of our finances. I am grateful to this team. An audit in a church lets people be confident and know of our efforts to best handle contributions.

Also on this day a group of people will be opening their mail to read an invitation from

me to serve on a new stewardship committee that I have assembled to handle this Fall’s fi-nancial campaign. We had a strong campaign two years ago and I believe we are due for one this year. The Stewardship Committee works as a sub-group of our Finance Committee. We are blessed with a strong conscientious Finance Committee and I am excited about the newly invited Stewardship Committee. You will be hearing more from them. They will encourage all of us to participate in two ways. One by supporting our annual pledge drive and also by as-sessing our involvement and review opportunities to be involved in our wonderful church.

There will be reports on our financial standing as a church, projections of vision, and

the creation of a budget for next year. Yes, stewardship is a good thing. “Why?” you ask. Be-cause it is a blessing to be a part of a loving congregation like this one, that is also looking for new ways to make peoples’ lives better and improve this world of ours.

Willowbrook UMC not only puts smiles on faces of people locally through fellowship op-

portunities and worship experiences; we also put smiles on faces of people overseas through mission and conservation efforts. Locally, here in the good old U.S.A. we touch lives through our many programs that make life better through education, food and clothing distribution, and through health clinics. Our Church makes a difference. This is something to be proud of!

So . . . get ready, stewardship will provide opportunities to support heart-warming work

of the church as well as to invite you to “put your boots on” and get out there yourself. Stewardship is a good thing. It is God’s thing.

See you in church,

Pastor Gary Kennedy

Coming Soon! The Holidaze Craft Faire is a great way to support our church’s Outreach/Mission projects. Fellowship as we work together side-by-side is also great! You too can join in the fun! We are currently very busy with preparations for another fan-tastic Holidaze Craft Faire on Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2. Booths are filling up; get your reservation in! Our own Kris Krafters are working on many items to sell in their area. If you are interested in joining them, they meet at 9:00 a.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month. We need lots of extra help for planning, set-up, baking, lunch preparation, raffle sales, etc. Mark your calendars now and watch for more details to come! If you have any questions, please contact Barb Christie at [email protected] or 623-376-7941.

Each month we join other churches in prayer for churches of the West District in the Desert Southwest Conference.

How does God speak to you? Do you encounter him in the words and actions of other people, through worship and church fellowship, in pray-er and devotion or perhaps “nudges” or dreams?

God can speak to us in any of these ways and more, but the most time-honored way for Christians, is through scripture. We invite YOU to join us for our Disciple III class this fall, a study of the prophets of the Old Testament and the letters of Paul in the New Testament. The prophet Jeremiah proclaimed, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (29:11) God has plans for you – yes, even if you think you have more of a past than a future! “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them, bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Studying scripture helps us stay connected to Christ, and when we study as a group it helps us stay connected to each other! So join us this fall for Disciple III, “Remember Who You Are,” and strengthen the foundations of your faith. This class follows a 2-year cycle: this fall and winter we will study the first half (the prophets), and next fall and winter we will study the second (letters of Paul). No previous Disciple study is required, and the Disciple classes do not have to be taken in sequence. Class will meet on Fridays in the church library from 1 to 3 p.m. Look for sign-up sheets and more information in Wilson Fellowship Hall, starting in September.

we will discuss the books we have been reading and our ac-tivities.

Here are the books we have chosen for the Fall/Winter. A few of them are quite long, so get started NOW!

Thursday, September 5 & 19 9:00 a.m.

As the long, hot days of summer give way to the cooler days of autumn, the Kris Krafters of Willowbrook shift into preparing for the Holidaze Craft Faire in November. Holiday bibs, holiday wreaths, and holiday decorations are made with love. Colorful aprons, handmade pothold-ers, and microwave baskets are again being fashioned for this year’s gifts. Kris Krafters returning to Willow-brook after a summer away are bringing in lots of hand-made gifts and crafts. The Holidaze Craft Faire will be in Wilson Fellowship Hall and the Courtyard on November 1 and 2. The items remaining after the Craft Faire will again be available to Willowbrook members on Sunday, November 3. Pro-ceeds from the sale of Kris Krafter’s items go toward the purchase of supplies, materials and sewing machine maintenance. The best part is the distribution of the holiday items to local charities in plenty of time for giving out to needy families. Be sure to check out the list of the local chari-ties that the Kris Krafters support with donations of clothing, bedding, gifts and decorations. This list is post-ed on the Kris Krafter bulletin board in Wilson Fellow-ship Hall, and will be prominently dispayed throughout the Holidaze Craft Faire. All are welcome to come help sew, knit, crochet, quilt, craft and enjoy the fellowship. Kris Krafters meet on the first and third Thursday each month at 9:00 a.m. in Wil-son Fellowship Hall.

Summer donations through September will be used to sup-port the Salvation Army’s back-to-school clothing drive. In late summer, the Salvation Army brings children and volunteers to the Walmart on Lake Pleasant Parkway for the opportunity to buy new clothing. I know as a child, I always looked forward to shopping with my mom for new clothing. To support this event, loose change offerings can be placed in the Benji jar in Wilson Fellowship Hall. You can also donate by check. Simp-ly indicate “Benji Fund” in the memo section.

Hunger continues to be one of the largest social issues in our community. The Salvation Army’s Surprise location is an “official” hydration station for our area. With that in mind, over the next few months, the Salvation Army has asked us to do-nate bottled water and non-perishable foods. Thank you for your ongoing support.

September is always an exciting time for United Meth-odist Women as we recognize our women involved in mission on United Methodist Women Sunday, Septem-ber 15 at the 9:30 service. Our guest speaker will be Frank Nagy, Chief Development Officer from Wesley Community Center. Many of the Willowbrook women will be involved in the service and we ask that ALL women in UMW wear a red ribbon available in the narthex before the service. If you have an interest in UMW, talk to one of the women with a ribbon. There are 5 circles that meet at various times of the month. It is a wonderful way to make connections and work together for mission. The next combined meeting of all circles will be October 20 which will feature an accessory fashion show, the accessories will be donated to WHEAT’s clothes silo. Please bring gently used purses, scarves and/or cos-tume jewelry to the September or October circles. Our Thankfulness potluck is scheduled for November 18 and we all look forward to our annual Christmas Tea on December 6. One hundred fifty years ago the Women’s Foreign Mis-sionary Society was formed, a predecessor organization to today’s United Methodist Women. They raised funds to send a teacher and a doctor to India when they learned that women could not be seen by a male doctor or were not allowed education. So, in 1869 Dr. Clara Swain supported by the Women’s Foreign Mission Soci-ety went to Bareilly, India where for 27 years she treated women and children and eventually founded the first women’s hospital in Asia. Since then the welfare of women, children and the elderly has been at the fore-front of United Methodist Women. Our own Willowbrook unit has focused on foster children this year as our main mission outreach.
