Preschool Programs

Gym & Swim | (1-3yrs Parented) or (3-5yrs Parented) This program is designed to get your child moving on land and in the water. We will be learning fundamental movement skills that can be applied to sport skills in and out of the class. We will also include team-building activities and songs to make this land and water class exciting.

Pre-Sport | (2-3yrs Parented) or (3-5yrs Unparented) This recreational program will develop your child’s fundamental movement skills and help foster a love of sports and physical activity in a fun, inclusive atmosphere.

Y-Play Group | (6wks–5yrs Parented) Children and their parents get to meet new friends, socialize, try interesting activities, play games, and connect with other parents. In this course, 30 minutes are instructor-led and 60 minutes are self-directed.

Creative Movement | (3-5yrs) or (5-7yrs) Participants will have fun as they explore creative expression and learn basic physical literacy skills through dance, yoga, and other artistic movements. Children will be encouraged to express their individual style and imagination while discovering the world of movement.

Family Fitness

Family Dance Your family can be active together in this fun class that teaches dances made for the whole family.

Baby & Me Tummy Time | (6wks–9mos) This is a post-natal fitness class dedicated to helping you develop a healthy core and pelvic floor. It's a safe environment for parents to learn and practice parent child bonding techniques and build healthy connections.

Baby & Me Fitness | (6wks–9mos) Take care of yourself post-natal by bringing your baby and stroller to this cardio and strength class. This program includes healthy core work and breathing techniques to improve your strength and stamina.

Baby & Me Barre | (6wks–9mos) Spend time with your baby and develop a stronger core and pelvic floor! This post-natal fitness class uses ballet-based fitness movements to increase your strength and flexibility.

Baby & Me Aquafit | (3–9mos) You and your baby will love this fun and interactive aquafit class, which provides an excellent cardio and strength workout that’s easy on the joints and includes an amazing stretch sequence.

YMCA Swim Lessons

LIL' DIPPERS – PARENT & TOT PROGRAMS | 6mos–3yrsBabies and toddlers develop their confidence to prepare for independent swim lessons. Skills include learning how to hold and assist your child, entering and exiting the water safely, splashing and kicking, getting faces wet, blowing bubbles and bobbing, assisted front and back floats, and towing. The Lil' Dippers Parented Program is drop-in and does not require registration.

SplashersAt this early stage, children are still learning a lot about their environment. The goal of Splashers is to make children and parents comfortable in the water together, and (of course) to learn to splash with arms and legs!

BubblersIntroduce your child to new movements in the water, including holding the wall, kicking feet, and blowing bubbles. Parents get in on the fun by participating with their children.

LIL' DIPPERS PROGRAMS | 3-5yrsLil' Dippers programs introduce preschoolers to a wide range of water activities, while setting a foundation for the critical life skill of swimming.

Bobbers – Bob and float, assisted.Bobbers hold the wall, kick, blow bubbles, bob unassisted, perform assisted front and back floats, and learn about water hazards.

Floater – Front/back floats.Floaters learn front and back floats, and perform 3-metre front and back glides.

Gliders – Front, side and back glides.Gliders develop deep water skills, perform 5-metre front and back swims, and learn how to access EMS.

Divers – Kick on front and back for 5m. Divers learn to surface support for 10 seconds, perform 5-metre front and back swims, and are introduced to boating safety.

Surfers – Surface-support for 30 seconds. Surfers perform kneeling dives, 15-metre front and back swims, and learn about ice safety.

Dippers – Swim for 25m. Dippers surface support for 45 seconds, perform 25-metre front and back swims, and are introduced to throwing assists.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS | 6+yrsLearn to Swim programs build a love for the water and introduce fundamental swim skills to children over the age of six.

Otter – Front, back, and side glides, submersion.Otters go underwater and glide on top of the water.

Seal – Front, back and side glides unassisted, deep water skills.Seals use flutter kicks and roll the body from side-to-side for streamlined movement through water.

Dolphin – Glide and kick for 10m, swim underwater.Dolphins coordinate arms, legs, and breathing for smooth propulsion during front and back crawl.

Swimmer – Front and back crawl for 15m.Swimmers improve their front and back strokes, endurance, and treading water skills.

Adult – Swim LessonsThe YMCA offers drop-in swim lessons for adults of all abilities. Whether you are working on becoming comfortable in the water, building on your current skills, or looking to improve your strokes, you are welcome to attend! Instructors will design the swim lessons based on participant attendance.

Private Swim Lessons Focus on the skills you want to develop during one-on-one 30-minute lessons with an experienced instructor.

STAR PROGRAMS | 6+yrsStar Programs 1 through 4 help participants improve swim ability, learn new strokes, develop endurance, and learn water sport, safety, and leadership skills.

Star 1 – Elementary backstroke, eggbeater.Star 1 swimmers whip kick on their backs and perform a 75-metre endurance swim.

Star 2 – Breaststroke, swim for 100m.Star 2 swimmers whip kick on their fronts, eggbeater as surface support, and swim 100 metres.

Star 3 – Dolphin kick, swim for 200m.Star 3 swimmers elementary backstroke, dolphin kick, and perform a 200-metre endurance swim.

Star 4 – Sidestroke, swim proficiency, lifesaving.Star 4 swimmers breaststroke, sidestroke, and perform a 350-metre endurance swim.

Star Programs 5 through 7 help participants continue to improve swim skills, refine strokes, and develop endurance. They continue to learn and practice water sport, safety, and leadership skills.

Star 5 – Butterfly, First Aid, teaching others.Star 5 swimmers learn butterfly and throw a buoyant aid to a swimmer, create and teach a water game, and perform a 500-metre endurance swim.

Star 6 – Lifesaving recognition and rescue, swim for 600m.Star 6 swimmers learn First Aid, how to tow someone to safety, demonstrate how to teach a skill, and perform a 600-metre endurance swim.

Star 7 – Volunteer in aquatics, swim 400m in 12 minutes.Star 7 swimmers learn First Aid, how to teach someone a skill using effective feedback, and perform a 12-minute 400-metre endurance swim.

Aqua – ZumbaAqua Zumba blends the Zumba philosophy with water resistance, for one pool party you shouldn’t miss! Make a splash by adding a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise to your fitness routine.

Y-Tri Swim | (16+yrs) Develop the swim skills you need to finish your first sprint triathlon in this program designed and led by knowledgeable and experienced coaches.

Open GymBring your friends and family to open gym, an unstructured time where you can play pick-up sports such as basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and more.

Floor Hockey | (16+yrs)Join in on recreational floor hockey for players of all levels. Please provide your own helmet and use only plastic blades.

Soccer | (12-17yrs)This skill-based version of soccer emphasizes skill, passing, and control using small nets and a low-bounce futsal ball in a game format.

Volleyball | (16+yrs)Join in on recreational volleyball for players of all levels. Team sizes are based on the number of attendees.

Badminton, Squash, and Racquetball | (12+yrs)Reserve a court up to three days in advance to enjoy participant-organized recreational racquet sports for any skill level. Equipment is provided.

Pickleball | (16+yrs) Pickleball is a unique paddle sport where two or four players use solid wood paddles to hit a ball, similar to a Wiffle ball, over a net. Equipment is provided.

Ping Pong (Table Tennis) | (12+yrs)Reserve the table for you and a friend up to three days in advance. Equipment is provided.

MARTIAL ARTS

Aikido | (16+yrs)Increase your strength, stamina, and balance in this non-violent martial arts class.

Judo | (6yrs–Adult)Develop self-discipline, balance, timing, and strategy while learning a sport that employs throwing and grappling techniques. All participants will be required to pay non-refundable Judo Alberta and club fees.

Moh Pai Kung Fu | (16+yrs)Increase your fitness and coordination in this dynamic and fun martial arts class that’s perfect for all experience levels.

Taekwondo | (6yrs–Adult) Learn the principles and skills of taekwondo, a recognized Olympic sport that builds strength and improves physical fitness while teaching discipline, competitive awareness, self-defense, anti-bullying strategies, and social skills.

Sportball – Parented | (2-3yrs) Sportball – Unparented | (3-5yrs) or (5-7yrs)Develop your child’s sport and social skills through imaginative, age-appropriate activities that feel just like daily play.

Purposeful Play Preschool | (3-5yrs) or (4-5yrs)This 10-month preschool program focuses on socialization, kindergarten preparation, and developing physical literacy skills so that children will have a lifelong love of being active.

Kids in the Kitchen | (4-5yrs) (5-7yrs) (7-9yrs) (9-12yrs) Children prepare and taste simple recipes, practice kitchen safety skills, and get the chance to read stories and make crafts.

Mermaid Swim School | (6-15yrs)Participants will learn how to safely swim like a true mermaid as they progress from No Tail to Tail Expert in this unique program. Participants must have a full-body Mertail, available at an additional cost. Prerequisites: Dolphin Swim Level or equivalent. Assessments may be required.

School Break Camps | (4-5yrs) (6-9yrs) (9-12 yrs)YMCA day camps are designed to spark imagination and build confidence, independence, and communication skills. All participants will have the opportunity to create positive peer friendships. Camps provide hands-on learning and skills development through games, craft activities, active play, swimming, and more. YMCA day camps are available during PD days and school breaks in winter, spring, and summer.

Yoga Kids | (4-12yrs)Children learn how to focus and center themselves with various breathing and visualization techniques. They will also learn self-respect and respect for others with the practice of fun and challenging poses, partner and group poses, lots of yoga games, breathing, and basic anatomy.

Zumba Kids | (4-12yrs)The Zumba Kids program is a version of the Zumba program designed for children. It is a high-energy class packed with specially choreographed routines and the latest music.

Active Y Kids | (7-12yrs) Through a variety of activities and fun games, Active Y Kids offers a chance for children to improve and sustain a healthy lifestyle. This program incorporates cardiovascular exercise and muscle conditioning, nutrition, and self-development education to improve overall health.

Junior Lifeguard Club | (8-15yrs)Develop skills based on personal bests in swimming, lifesaving, fitness, knowledge, leadership, and teamwork. This program provides high-activity challenges in an energetic environment both on deck and in the pool, plus an introduction to competitive lifesaving challenges. Prerequisites: Star 2 or equivalent and 8+yrs. Assessments may be required.

YMCA Swim Club | (8-15yrs)Take your swim skills to the next level while building confidence, sportsmanship, and a strong sense of team. Work with our coaches to learn workouts in the water and in the workout centre to improve your endurance and swim skills. Prerequisites: Star 2 or equivalent and 8+yrs. Assessments may be required.

Badminton | (9-12yrs) or (12-17yrs)Participate in a fast-paced racquet sport that helps improve agility, hand-eye coordination, and stamina. This program includes basic instruction and lots of game play.

Boxing | (Youth 8-15yrs) or (Adult 16+yrs) Learn specialized boxing techniques and skills to gain strength and agility while getting a full-body workout in a non-competitive, non-contact program.

Youth Night | (8-12 yrs)An opportunity for youth to participate in activities in all facility areas. First Friday of every month.

Leaders in Training | (12-17yrs)Leaders in Training (LIT) helps youth develop skills in the areas of situational leadership, communication, and teamwork. Games, initiative tasks, special projects, and volunteer placements will enhance participants’ leadership skills and self-esteem. Youth will have an opportunity to participate in special events and attend the YMCA Western Canadian Leadership Conference through fundraising and volunteerism.

Yin Yoga This class is on the floor most of the time, using as many props as needed to create as little possible effort while holding poses.

Personal TrainingCertified personal trainers will help you stay motivated, ensure proper technique, and help you build an exercise program that meets your individual needs. Personal trainers can also provide sport-specific training for events like triathlons or other races.

Partner Training Bring a friend and work with a certified personal trainer to help you both meet your goals.

Group Training Get the benefits of working with a certified personal trainer and the added motivation of working out in a group of three to five people.

Large Group TrainingTeams, school groups, offices, or clubs will find a unique team-building experience in large group training. Specific programs include customized sport training, dryland training, functional fitness circuits, customized boot camps, and TRX-Suspension training.

Body CompositionHave a certified personal trainer evaluate your body composition and make recommendations to help you reach your goals.

InBody Body Composition AssessmentGet an assessment using the InBody 570 Body Composition Analysis Technology, which provides a vital statistics report including: basal metabolic rate, lean muscle mass, visceral fat level, segmental fat, lean muscle analysis, and more.

YMCA Fitness Instructor Certifications YMCA Instructor Certification includes fitness theory and fundamentals related to the type of certification, ongoing self-directed learning, and peer teaching.

Yoga Fitness Instructor CertificationThis 50-hour course includes all the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA yoga instructor.

YMCA Strength Instructor CertificationThis 30-hour course includes all the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA strength instructor.

YMCA Cardio Choreography Instructor Certification This 26-hour course includes all of the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA cardio choreography instructor.

YMCA Personal Trainer CertificationThis 40-hour course includes all of the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA personal trainer.

YMCA Cyclefit CertificationThis 25-hour course includes all the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA Cyclefit instructor.

YMCA Aquatic Fitness Instructor CertificationThis 32-hour course includes all the technical fitness course requirements you need to be a certified YMCA aquatic fitness instructor in both deep and shallow water.

Aquatic Certifications

Bronze StarThe Bronze Star course provides excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in groups. They learn CPR and develop Water Smart confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifesaver. Includes CPR Level A and AED. Prerequisites: Recommended 12+yrs and Star 4.

Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross Combo CourseThe Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross Combo course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Participants must complete Bronze Medallion before Bronze Cross can be attempted. Includes CPR Levels A and C. Prerequisites: Bronze Star and 13+yrs. Recertification: Please bring your Bronze Cross award to the course.

NL/AEC/O2 Course and RecertificationsThe NL program develops basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and the decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies.

Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) is a course that develops participants’ First Aid skills with a focus on aquatic injuries aid and is recommended for lifeguards.

Oxygen Administration (O2) provides the knowledge and techniques for the use of oxygen as a supplement in an emergency care situation. Includes CPR Level C and AED. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross and 16+yrs. Recertification: Courses include all above certifications and cannot be separated. Participants must bring copies of their current awards to the course.

Lifesaving Instructor Course & RecertificationsLifesaving instructors are trained to teach and evaluate the Canadian Swim Patrol Program, as well as the Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Lifesaving Fitness, and CPR-C/AED awards. Instructor candidates train in the different learning styles and approaches required to teach water rescue, education, and leadership in the Canadian Lifesaving Program. This introductory level is the base for all other instructor certifications Prerequisites: 16+yrs and current Bronze Cross or higher.

National Lifeguard Instructor Clinic The National Lifeguard (NL) Instructor/Examiner clinic prepares candidates with the strategies needed to teach and evaluate new lifeguards in NL courses. Candidates are required to complete an apprenticeship after the clinic. Prerequisites: Pre-approval from Lifesaving Society Application, current NL option, current Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner, and 16+yrs.

National Lifeguard Instructor RecertificationNational Lifeguard Instructor Recertification participants must be up to date on their Lifesaving Society mandatory updates and hold a National Lifeguard Instructor award and be in good standing with the Lifesaving Society.

Assistant Volunteer Swim Instructor | (12+yrs)The Assistant Volunteer Swim Instructor assists the Swim Instructor in facilitating swim lessons. The Assistant Swim Instructor will carefully monitor all class participants to enforce safe practices, devote equal time to all participants, and refer questions from parents of participants to instructors. The Assistant Swim Instructor will also ensure that each child is safely returned to his/her parent at the end of each lesson. Prerequisites: Minimum 12+yrs and completion of volunteer documentation with criminal record check.

YMCA Swim Instructor CourseThe YMCA Swim Instructor Course certifies participants to teach the YMCA swim program. Both classroom and pool sessions are included in the course to help develop candidates into competent swim instructors. Note: Upon completion of classroom work, a 20- to 40-hour practicum is required before candidates are evaluated for certification. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid or AEC, and 16+yrs.

First Aid Certifications

First Aid InstructorCandidates learn how to teach and evaluate First Aid skills in both aquatic and non-aquatic environments. Candidates earn the Instructor Award(s) for the current First Aid Award(s) they hold. Prerequisites: Lifesaving Instructor, Standard First Aid (SFA), and/or Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) and 18+yrs.

First Aid Instructor RecertificationInstructors must have a First Aid Instructor certification and be up to date on all mandatory updates and be in good standing with the Lifesaving Society.

CPR-C/AEDCPR-C (Adult, Child & Infant) teaches how to recognize circulatory emergencies, and perform one- and two-rescuer CPR and choking procedures for all age groups. CPR-C is included in Standard First Aid (SFA) and Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC). Prerequisites: 13+yrs.

Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED & Recertifications Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of First Aid and CPR. Prerequisites: 13+yrs. Recertification: Must hold a current Standard First Aid certification.
