St Titus’ News Digest - September, 2018

Yvette Matthews has just returned home from The Transplant Games of America held in Salt Lake City, Utah. She came home with 6 medals. She won gold medals in shotput, softball throw, long jump, and 1500m walk, a silver medal in discus, and a bronze medal in 5k cycling. While at The Transplant Games she took part in breaking a Guinness Book of World Records record for having the most people who had received an organ transplant all in one place. Yvette was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called primary sclerosing chol-

angitis (PSC) in 2001 and received a liver transplant in 2013. She is looking forward to attending The North Carolina Senior Games in September. Next year she hopes to attend The National Sen-ior Games in June and The World Transplant Games in August.

Priest Service Increased to Full-Time To St. Titus’ Members and Friends: During our mid-year congregational meeting the vestry shared that we were hoping to bring Rev. Yancy to full-time status. Those present at the meeting voted to encourage the vestry

to make this change. We are happy to report that the vestry will bring Rev. Yancy to full-time status ef-fective September 1, 2018. This is a huge milestone for St. Titus’ and an affirmation of the work we have been doing together. Our last full-time priest was The Rev. William Maddox who served from 2002 to 2008. The return to full-time status for our priest is only possible due to the grace of God and your gen-erous giving. We look forward to your continued support in 2019. Yours in Christ, Chuck Hennessee Senior Warden

St. Titus’ has been growing in amazing ways. The Spirit clearly is blessing the work we’re doing and we want to be a blessing to our neighbors. In par-ticular, I think we’ve been given the gifts and resources to bless the chil-dren in this neighborhood. We are so fortunate to have the Delany House available for Sunday School classes. I would like to make that space more attractive and inviting for children. Can you spare a few hours to help me set up the space? We’re going to be introducing some new materials. Can you help build a small prayer table, or paint little lambs to help us tell the

Good Shepherd story? Can you donate some fabric scraps, or do a little sewing? Can you commit to teaching a class once a month? If so please see me. Our children are our treasure. Together let’s show them how much God loves them and help them fall in love with God. Stephanie+

St. Titus’ News Digest - September, 2018

Penick Village, an Episcopal retirement community located in Southern Pines, NC, will conduct a ground breaking ceremony for the erection of the Wharton Building. The ground breaking ceremony will take place on Friday, September 28, 2018, at 1:30 pm in honor of Fletcher D. Wharton and Mrs. Annie Melissa Wharton the first African Americans to reside at Penick Village. Mrs. Wharton attended Barber Scotia College located in Concord, NC. After NC A & T State University became a co-educational institution, she transferred and completed her education there in home economics. Mr. Wharton completed his education at NC A & T State University and taught there as well. Upon leaving NC

A & T State University, he accepted a faculty appointment at Winston-Salem State University. Later he left North Carolina to accept better career opportunities. Eventually, the Wharton’s returned to their home state of North Carolina to care for Fletcher’s aging mother, and Tarboro became the family’s home town. Fletcher was the first African-American county extension agent in Edgecombe County; he also established Farmers’ Mar-kets in Tarboro and Rocky Mount, organized a credit union, and a Civic Center. Later the state extension department in-structed Mr. Wharton to establish the first training center in Edgecombe County for beginning African-American extension agents. The Wharton’s were very active in the community and were dedicated members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Tarboro. They had three children, Annie Mae Wharton-Bridges, Ferdinand D. Wharton, Jr. (deceased), and Juanita Wharton-Taylor. The two daughters reside in Durham and are members of the St Titus’ Episcopal Church family.

Doing Just One Thing Can Change a Life Creating a connection can build foundations for young adults—by the Rev. Tambria E. Lee August 24, 2018

Saint Augustine’s University, one of two Episcopal HBCUs, is located in Raleigh. Photo courtesy of Saint Augustine’s University

Imagine picking up your cell phone, reading an email or unfolding a note tacked to your office door with one of these questions:

Can you reach out to my friend who just found out her close friend from high school overdosed and died?

Will your church accept me if I am gay?

Can you call John and meet him at church so that someone can be with him when I tell him his father has

died?

What does God and the church say about sex?

Can you tell me when the 12-step program for young adults meets?

Can I start a weekday meal for the homeless in the church kitchen?

What do you do for spring break that doesn’t involve a cruise, a bus or sleeping in a tent?

Is there a Bible study here that allows me to ask all the questions I want?

Can you help me figure out how to stay in school with a newly unemployed parent?

My mother died the first week of school and all I want to do is go home.

Do you have a young adult group for recent graduates?

These are some of the many and varied questions diocesan college and young adult missioners answer every day in coffee shops and classrooms, at lunch tables and in corporate corridors across the state. They have learned that answering these questions makes the difference in whether or not these young people explore, join or remain in church. Some students find their way to a campus or young adult ministry, but many are not even aware these key networks exist.

Every member of the Diocese of North Carolina has the power to change that.

Many universities, particularly public ones, do not share information about students with outside groups. Campus ministers and young adult missioners depend on congregations to connect young adults leaving their home church to campuses and parishes throughout the Diocese of North Caroli-na so they can be welcomed in the radical way of Jesus into the young adult community.

By using Just One Thing, you can create those connections for those leaving your church for the next chapter in their lives, helping them find their new – or even first - faith home. Just One Thing is a form that takes less than one minute to fill out; it is on the diocesan website and when submitted, it is sent to the campus minister indicated or the nearest young adult missioner. The young adult will then be contacted and welcomed.

It is a tender, exciting and vulnerable time when a first-year student, graduate, professional or un-dergraduate starts a new path. It is even more challenging for those leaving the comfort and security of academia for the uncharted seas of work and making friends. Help continue the adventure of faith formation begun in parish churches in the waters of baptism, nurtured in Sunday school classes and youth groups, crafted in the school of outreach and learning to reach across a pew to pass the peace. Don’t make young adults wait until they have children to return to the Church. Then it may be too late to be that haven for their hungering soul. Help them, and those who have yet to discover the power of relationship with God and God’s people, to keep the faith by doing Just One Thing.

The Rev. Tambria E. Lee is the chaplain and young adult missioner at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Rev. Sarah Woodard, Deacon , regularly seeks opportunities for St. Titus to Do Many Things in the Durham Community and Beyond. The AAEHC is a joint project of the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church and the Virginia Theological Seminary. Individual collections contain significant references to religious faith and

involvement in the Episcopal Church, particularly at the regional, diocesan, and local levels.

The following list details some of the topics that are among the collection’s strengths: • The Afro-Anglican conferences • The histories of black Episcopal parishes • Networking and mentorship among black clergy • The history of the Union of Black Episcopalians • The history of the Conference of Church Workers Among Colored People • The history of the Bishop Payne Divinity School that educated African Americans for the priesthood during the late nine teenth and early twentieth centuries • The editing of the Lift Every Voice and Sing hymnal • The work of artist Allan Rohan Crite • The Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity • The contributions of various individuals to the Episcopal Church, such as The Rt. Donations Requested During our Homecoming Celebration, we will collect Bedding Kits (full or queen sized) that include sheets, pillow cases and comforters. These bed lin-en kits will be given to Families Moving Forward (FMF), a nonprofit organiza-tion that offers a temporary home to families with children who are in the crisis of homelessness. Families Moving Forward was created in 2016 after the suc-cessful merger of Genesis Home and Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network. The recent expansion of the former GH has increased the capacity to serve more families; FMF serves up to 100 families annually with 140-180 children, making FMF the largest housing and services provider for homeless families in Durham. Their vision is to provide a permanent, stable home for every family by working together with personalized services and ongoing community sup-port. Please bring your Full Bedding Kit (s) donation to the church on September 9. For more information, contact Rev. Sarah Woodard, Deacon, at 919-599-5227 or [email protected]
