According to Sub-Branch records, the inaugural meeting of the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta District RSL Sub-Branch was held on 27 September 1918, with less than a dozen World War I (1914-1918) returned servicemen in attendance. In the early years, the Sub-Branch struggled to gain members and recognition. In 1925, a letter was sent to its few existing members about an upcoming monthly meeting, requesting their attendance and also asking them to bring along a returned soldier friend or friends. The 1930s became years of consolidation for the Sub-Branch but by the end of that decade, local families were once again saying goodbye to a new generation of town folk who were embarking for overseas combat during World War II (1939 to 1945). By the end of the war, membership had risen to 200 but it took until 1969 for Sub-Branch member- ship to pass the 1,000 mark. By 1990, the Sub-Branch had over 6,000 members. As sub-branch membership nation- wide continues to decline, the focus of Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-Branch is twofold: ensuring ageing ex-servicemen and women continue to receive the care and attention they deserve; and welcoming a new generation of serving or ex-service men and women to its ranks. Existing members of the Sub- Branch, as well as Twin Towns club members, should suggest to friends or relatives that may be serving or ex-service defence personnel, that they should join the Sub-Branch. Twin Towns Board Director and Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-Branch Secretary Dr John Grifn says that whilst Australian service personnel continue to serve, there will always be a need for the Sub-Branch. “Today, we continue to do the work our forebears started at the Sub-Branch 100 years ago, and that is mates looking after mates. “The spirit and goals of our organisation are as true today as they were when the returned diggers of Tweed Heads and Coolangatta embarked on its establishment in 1918,” said Dr Grifn. I am sure readers would be interested to know how old the Masters Swimming Club is? We’re 30 years young, beginning at the Tweed Shopping Centre Community Room under the banner of Tweed Coolangatta AUSSI Masters Swimming.

AUSSI stands for Australian Union of Senior Swimmers Incorporated. Much later we competed under the Twin Towns banner, becoming Twin Towns Masters Swimming.

We have a great heated pool and lovely facilities. We consider ourselves the friendliest club on the coast with much laughter, and fitness. There’s no excuse not to come and join us.

The Masters Swimmers have a social outing each month and

attend the Back to the Tivoli Shows at Twin Towns every two months, staying on to socialise over lunch.

We are proud to say we raised $700 at our Cancer Morning Tea held on the veranda of Dave and Barb's house; $100 more than last year. Everyone brings a plate and wears pink and we have lots of raffles and fun.

For those who want to compete, there are plenty of Carnivals to attend. We have been to Alice Springs, Cairns, Darwin, Wanganui and Dunedin in New Zealand. Swimming at night in New Zealand gave us time to sightsee during the day.

Our State Championships and Nationals are held in Australian

cities. We have quite a history, attaining 11 Masters World records, 44 National and 28 State Records.

The most exciting news to share is about our 100 year (young) swimmer George Corones. George started swimming at the age of 80 and has now smashed seven world records.

He swims three times a week and goes to the gym three times a week. His motto is, “Don’t stop and keep active". What a great example George is to us all!

He was once asked to join another club but his answer was, “No, I will always belong to Twin Towns”. And we have always said, "He is ours".

Community Club Supporting Community

Twin Towns Services Clubs & Resorts and Twin Towns Services Community Found-ation support Southern Cross University Rising Stars Scholarships and Shaping Outcomes (formerly Tweed Valley Early Childhood Intervention Service), as part of our contribution to support our community on behalf of members.

Rising Stars Scholarships

For many years, Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts and the Twin Towns Services Community Foundation have each supported two students through the Rising Stars Scholarships program. The four local students receive a grant of $5,000 per year for three years to cover their annual expenses. Southern Cross University selects the students based on an agreed selection criteria which

includes an achievable pass requirement for funding to continue year-on-year.

Director David Phillips (on behalf of the Foundation) and I (on behalf of Twin Towns) recently attended the University Rising Stars Scholarship presentation day at the Gold Coast Campus where scholarships were presented to students by Vice Chancellor, Professor Adam Shoemaker.

Both Boards consider this a wonderful program. On behalf of members, we support these local stud-ents who present a platform for our future in the Tweed area and who otherwise, without this financial support, may struggle to complete their degree.

Shaping Outcomes

Shaping Outcomes has had an association with Twin Towns since 1993 when run by the amazing taskmaster,

one extremely passionate Judith Terkelsen OAM.

In the late 1980s, from a demountable in the Tweed Hospital grounds, this early intervention centre commenced with six students and six parents, assisted by one volunteer teacher and a clinical phycologist.

By 1991, 30 students were enrolled, assisted by families, with 18 students on the waiting list.

By 2017, students enrolled had reached 191, with 16 staff teaching children up to twelve years of age. 80% of staff, mostly volunteers, have children with a disability or developmental delay difficulties and certainly understand the needs required and challenges faced by families.

On 1 July 2017, the NDIS became a reality, resulting in considerable change. Shaping Outcomes, who are leaders in their field, were approved as a National Disability Insurance Agency and an Early Childhood Early Intervention Trans- ition provider.

Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts and the Twin Towns Community Foundation recognised the need when previous Twin Towns

Directors Ron Lewis and Darryl Pollett became involved in early 2000.

They saw the outstanding work carried out by TVECIS staff and realised how little funding was available from the Government to support the many local children who experienced learning difficulties and disabilities. With the specialist education offered by TVECIS, many may be eligible to enter a local schooling program and society generally.

Rotary, under John Bolster’s presidency, constructed the first educational training facility next to the Tweed Hospital in the late 1980s and now Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts and the Twin Towns Services Community Foundation jointly fund some of the huge costs in running this invaluable program for local children with learning difficulties.

I should also add that other local clubs have come on board through ClubGRANTS in support of other local sponsors.

In 2017, Twin Towns provided funding of $15,000 for specific learning program and the Foundation provided an additional $20,000.

An annual children’s party is also provided at an additional cost. Each year, Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts and the Foundation fund this party to entertain over 200 local children and their families.

The party, held in Twin Towns Showroom, allows the children to play in a safe environment and allows parents free time to mingle with other parents without any unnecessary concern for their children.

Music played by many a top-ranking artist, face painting, balloon artistry, games and movies are just some of the entertainment provided. Party food, sausage rolls and cakes are just some of the amazing catering provided on the day for these very special children and their families.

Shaping Outcomes said:

“In 2018, our service now delivers to over 200 families of children aged 0-12 years with a disability or developmental delay. There is a full-time director, three part-time administration/management staff, three part-time disability support workers, two full-time and five part-time teachers, both child and family disability specialists, and three addit-

ional part-time support staff.

We work with 35 therapists, 26 early childhood services and 35 primary schools. We have been able to offer a continuity of support to such a large number of families throughout their transition to the NDIS purely due to the ongoing and unfailing support of our community partners.

Based on research on the most recently available ABS statistics, we have estimated that unfortunately over 470 children during 2019-2020 with a mild disability in our Tweed Community will be missing out on funded support when entering our education system without the necessary support and benefit of early intervention”.

Shaping Outcomes was named winner of the “Excellent Team Around A Child” Award at the 2017 ECIA Excellence Awards.

I am sure members would take pride in the knowledge their membership support goes to such a worthy cause supporting community.

Wishing for some good drought relieving rains, good health and I look forward to catching up around our Clubs and Resort.

BOARD CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

FEATURED CLUB

Twin Towns Masters 100-year-old swimmer George Corones.

With a national media presence covering the drought situation across NSW (100% drought declared) and Queensland, not forgetting the fact that farmers supply much of the produce to Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts for catering for the benefit of our members, it is appropriate that Twin Towns support the

important drought relief cause.

There are many worthy charitable organisations providing feed for stock and more importantly, direct physical, psychological and financial support for families in need, such as the Salvation Army, Rotary, Drought Angels and ClubsNSW supporting Team Rubicon, to name a few.

(Team Rubicon is made up of over 30 Australian Defence Force Veterans using past skills as seen in the aftermath of the Tathra Bushfires.)

One should also remember this drought may run for some considerable time yet and once breaking rains occur, it may be many months before stock can

graze on this new pasture, with

many variables applicable.

Twin Towns Clubs & Resort and

Twin Towns Services Community

Foundation have both agreed to

support drought relief initially

with a grant of $20,000 from

each organisation respectfully.

We trust our $40,000 will ease

some of the burden and are

pleased to be a part of this

broad community effort on your behalf.

How and where these funds will

be dispersed will be decided

at the next Twin Towns Board

meeting. More on this in October

Southern Cross University’s Rising Star scholarship program is based on community support that can set a student on the path to realising their potential.

The program gives local busi-nesses and organisations such as Twin Towns the opportunity to recognise, support and contribute to student achievement.

Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts and Twin Towns Community Foundation have been lending a helping hand of financial support to young Southern Cross University students since 2010.

Currently, Bachelor of Social Wel-fare student Brayden Maynard and Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student Jacinta Greenup both receive a Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts Scholarship, while Bachelor of Digital Business student Matteo Caridi and Business/Laws student Sarah Ashley receive a scholarship thanks to a Twin Towns Services Community Foundation.

Twin Towns Deputy Chairman Brian Brown said the Club is proud to support the Rising Stars Program on behalf of members.

“We have been so impressed with the young people that we have been able to meet and support,

and we know that in some way they will go in to the community and make a difference through the work they do in their future careers,” he said.

The students’ stories are inspirational, like that of 20-year-old Jacinta Greenup who was hooked on surfing from the moment she rode her first waves as a kid at Cabarita Beach.

In 2015, she competed in the World Qualifying Series while still managing her Year 12 studies. At that point Jacinta decided to complete the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at Southern

Cross University before heading

back to the world of surfing fulltime.

Jacinta has competed in the same

competition league as big name

surfers Steph Gilmore, Tyler Wright

and Coco Ho.

“I am so grateful for how much

Twin Towns has helped me out,”

said Jacinta.

“It’s been easy to focus on Uni

without the pressure of also

having a part-time job while

training and competing and I’ve

been able to consistently achieve

good grades.”

Twin Towns Rising Stars

At the Rising Stars Scholarship presentation, Twin Towns Director David Phillips, Sarah Ashley, Matteo Caridi and SCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Adam Shoemaker.

For the past 40 years, Twin Towns Board and Management have been committed to giving members the highest quality entertainment week in, week out, in the Showroom.

Many large concert and theatre venues, and venues that use ticketing agents such as Ticketek and Ticketmaster, charge administration fees. These can range between $6 and $8 or more, depending on the venue.

Rising costs of contracting entertainment for the Showroom has necessitated the introduction of a moderate administration fee on tickets sold for the Twin Towns Showroom. This fee will be applied per transaction, not per ticket, so if you purchase multiple tickets for day or evening shows, there will only be one transaction fee.

The fee will be introduced from 1 September 2018. Tickets for new evening shows contracted after this date will incur the administration fee. These changes will not affect the ticket prices for evening shows already released.

The administration fee for evening shows in the Showroom will be $4.50; the fee for daytime shows will be $1.50. The previous $2 administration fee for phone bookings for daytime shows will no longer apply.

Twin Towns will continue to bring the very best entertainment to the Twin Towns Showroom for members and visitors to enjoy. And remember, there are also more than 300 hours of free entertainment every month with bands, duos and soloists performing live at Twin Towns, Club Banora and Twin Towns Juniors.

Head to www.twintowns.com.au or download the Twin Towns App to find out what’s on at your favourite Club.

From 1 September through to 30 November, Twin Towns will add a new and innovative twist to Members Happy Hour!

Happy Hour for Twin Towns members will take place SEVEN nights a week, even on Friday and Saturday nights, from 9pm to 11pm.

Executive Business Manager Rod Pain said members will receive a 20 percent discount on all cold beverages from all bars on Level 1 at Twin Towns Services Club.

“Most pubs and clubs offer happy hour and discounted drinks at earlier times through the day and usually only a couple of days a week.

“We decided to make our Happy Hour from 9pm to 11pm every night so more members can make the most of the discounts, including younger members who

often only get the chance to visit the Club after dark.

“If you’re planning a night out with a bunch of friends, now you can kick off with a couple of hours at Twin Towns with discounted drinks while you catch a live band at The Stage.

“After dining at any of the Club’s restaurants, members can head to Breezes, the Harbour Lounge, the Harbour Balcony or The Stage and enjoy some discounted drinks from 9pm,” said Rod.

When Australian Defence Force veteran and Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-Branch member, Peter Rudland, heads to Sydney to compete in the Invictus Games, he’ll be packing some new wheels for his rugby wheelchair and much-needed spare parts, thanks to Twin Towns.

Twin Towns provided spon-sorship support for Peter, who Co-Captained the Australian Invictus Games team in Canada last year, where he won two gold medals.

The former 2 Commando soldier served in Cambodia, Iraq and Timor Leste before being injured in a Black Hawk helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2010.

Three Australians and one American died; Peter was amongst seven seriously injured. Thrown 35 metres on impact, Peter sustained multiple life-threatening and life-changing injuries, including a broken back, pelvis and knee.

When released from hos-pital, Peter says he was in a really bad place for a long time.

A few years later, Peter was introduced to the Warrior Games trials in Florida, a multi-sport event for injured US veterans. A bike coach there asked if he had tried

a recumbent bike, which allows the rider to lie down while pedalling.

"I went for a ride and it was just the perfect exercise,” said Peter.

“I was supposed to be gone for 10 minutes but I rode around the base for 40 minutes.”

Soon after, Peter was chosen to represent Australia at the 2016 Invictus Games.

"In my first race I was coming dead last – other cyclists were lapping me, but I couldn’t care less. I just had a huge grin on my face because I was doing something I could do all by myself.”

Twin Towns Board Director David Phillips said Peter is an inspiration to all he meets.

“Peter has faced years of rehabilitation but has let nothing stand in his way in pursuing his sport-ing dreams.

“Everyone at Twin Towns is behind him and his goal to replicate last year’s success at this year’s Invictus Games.

“The Board and I are proud to support him on behalf of our members in his endeavour to bring home the Gold."

The Invictus Games takes place in Sydney from 20- 27 October.

Board Director David Phillips (left) and Invictus Games competitor, Peter Rudland, showing off his new wheels.

When Vincent van Gogh was painting his famous Sunflower series in the south of France in September 1888, he was said to have written to his brother Theo: 'I am hard at it, painting with the enthusiasm of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse’.

So it seems there was a foodie twist to Sunflowers, 130 years ago to the day.

Twin Towns Executive Chef Lloyd Cremer put his own foodie twist on Sunflowers with his entry in Ora King Salmon’s ‘Inspired by Art’ Awards.

This year’s brief was to take inspiration from a piece of art, across any medium, and interpret this as an Ora King dish.

In the Twin Towns’ kitchen, where there is never a shortage of creativity and culinary wizardry, Ora King was the hero in Lloyd’s abstract interpretation of this famous painting.

Lloyd and Harbour Fresh Chef Brad Edwards didn’t take the title at the recent ClubsNSW Chef’s Table culinary competition but they continually amaze with their stunning dishes and artistic presentation.

Judging will take place in the week starting Monday 24 September and awards announced at the 2 October meeting with a special morning tea. School garden, student project, school grounds, retirement village or residential multi-unit complex are all welcome to enter. There are many minor classes, one for everyone such as vegetable or herb garden, shrub tree or vine, succulents, annuals, plants in pots or hanging container. Next meeting will be 4 September at 9.45am at Club Banora. Visitors welcome at meet-ings to enjoy morning tea, guest speaker, plants and flowers and lots of raffle prizes. Enquiries to President Maria on 0448 531 055.

MENS BOWLS

Pennants have finished for the year and whilst the club did not participate in the finals, they acquitted

themselves very well. Thanks to all those players who represented the club, and the experience gained will be invaluable. Two Club Championships have been decided. The Veteran’s Singles and the B Grade Singles. Both titles were won by Ian Blackeby wielding his magic bowling arm. The B Grade Pairs are yet to be played to conclude the Championships. It has been disappointing for the organisers, Brian McHaffie and Alf Bailey, that many of the events had to be cancelled due to lack of entrants. So, in future, how about getting behind the organisers and just have a go! Longtime member, Roy Bradford, passed away recently. Roy was a very good bowler and held many Championship Titles over many years. We will miss Roy; he always had a joke to tell, vale, Roy Bradford. Keep well, play well.

BRIDGE

A three day Red Pairs event in July was won by Ian

Dickison and Paul Rose with Hugh Gilbert and David Freilich second, Tom Lyons and Denis Magee third. The Twin Towns Bridge Club places an emphasis on creating opportunities for less experienced players to win events, and recently introduced a new Monthly Handicap Competition. This is based on the best three handicap scores across the Monday competitions. The winners in June were Jean Fish and Hazel Monk; the July winners were Helen Flatley and Graham Gavin, and each will receive a $20 Twin Towns voucher. The Club Championship Teams will be held on Monday 3 and 10 September. The Bridge Club plays sessions from 12pm to 4pm at Twin Towns Juniors, Banora Point. For more information, contact the club at [email protected]

Chris Fraser, President.

TRIATHLON

Our 2018/19 season will commence at 6am until 7.30am on Saturday 15 September with a sign-on and ride the course morning – location Oasis Pools, Club Banora. This will be an opportunity to get your own personal timing chip. The following week we commence our racing timetable with the first two races being qualification races to determine your handicap. This year we have introduced an intermediate distance race open to all competitors. This is a great opportunity to experience what’s involved in a triathlon. The distances will be six laps of the pool, ride two laps of Darlington Drive and then a run from the pool along Darlington Drive and return. Our handicap system works to have all competitors back by 7.30am. We look forward to seeing you on the pool deck.

LADIES BOWLS

The last of the Competition finals resulted in close scores. President's Pairs winners were Elizabeth O'Reilly and Yvonne McKee and Consistency was won by Judy Foad. Games Director Judy congratulates all finalists, and thanks markers and umpires for their assistance during the competitive season. Star of the Green games are ongoing, with President Julie Johnston winning her third and permanent star. Our Division 4 and 6 Pennant sides have put in a hard-fought season against some strong opposition. Two casual vacancies on Committee have arisen, Publicity Officer and Assis-tant Treasurer. We hope that Hilary's club ethic inspires members to come forward and fill these roles. See Julie or Veronica for obligation-free details of the commitment and tasks. Mark Tuesday 18 September in your calendar, when we will celebrate a combined Patron's and Past Presidents' Day.

DIGGERS SWIMMING

We were one of many clubs that travelled to Nerang to contest the Top End Shield. No championships, just three events where the goal was to be closest to nominated time. Our president Brent Anderson made the final of the 50

metres. Sue Deegenaars made the final of the 25 metres and her error time of just 0.15 of a second saw her as runner-up. Our six person relay was way too fast, helped along by Guy’s young grandson Harry who shows great talent in the water. September will be a busy month. The 2nd is our final point score day of winter competition. Presentation and luncheon on the 9 September (numbers please). Bondi Icebergs are hosting the WSAA Australian Titles in Sydney on 16 September.   On 23 September we have competition against teams from Masters and the Twin Towns Swimming Club. Summer competition starts 7 October. New swimmers always welcome.

GOLF

Congratulations to the 2018 Men’s Single Match Play Champion James Cardoo who won a tight final, 2 and 1 over Kevin Bartlett. The new bridges in front of the 1st Green and 9th Tee are appreciated by golfers and helping some wayward shots with their ball friendly surface.  Thank you to the green’s team who achieved the bridge upgrades with minimal disruption to competition play. Congratulations to Veterans’ Captain Dave Harrod and his sub-committee for hosting their highly successful District day.  Thank you to our Vets for ensuring the field size was close to maximum. Well done to Nancy Douglas who played the ultimate shot to the Par 3, 11th Hole, on 31 July for her first ever Hole-In-One. Great effort also by the organisers of the 2018 Ladies Captain verses Vice President Day.  The match play competition finished tied and the ‘dress-up’ presentation was again a social highlight of the year.

Two Oscar-winning movies hit the big screen at Twin Towns in September, including a dramatic love story of a famous dressmaker and a dark, twisted comedy about a grieving mother and her quest for revenge.

Phantom Thread follows the story of Reynolds Woodcock, a dressmaker in the 1950s who was famous for dressing the likes of royalty, dames, movie stars and socialites.

When the bachelor meets a strong-willed woman called Alma, she becomes his muse and lover. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs

of New York) and Lesley Manville (Maleficent), this elegantly crafted film described by critics as “A mind-blowing depiction of a suspenseful romance”.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the comic masterpiece with a stellar leading performance from Frances McDormand (Fargo) who plays Mildred Hayes, a mother who refuses to come to terms with the unsolved murder of her daughter.

Believing that the local police have done nothing to solve the heinous crime, she rents three billboards outside her small

town to declare war against the local authorities for failing to find the killer.

McDormand’s role won her a prestigious Oscar for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role’. Also stars Woody Harrelson (Hunger Games) as Chief of Police, William Willoughby.

SUNDAY 30 SEPT 12-3PMSUNDAY 30 SEPT 12-3PM

Australia’s hit new Irish rock show, Eireborne, comes to Twin Towns in October. More than an Irish dance show, Eireborne is a theatrical experience like nothing you’ve seen before.

At O’Hennessy’s pub, the barman, played by Adrian Espulso (X-Factor and Channel Ten’s I Will Survive), welcomes the audience to a traditional ceili night.

His band of six musicians strum, drum, and bow both traditional and modern instruments, delivering worldwide hits from major Irish recording artists including U2, Van Morrison, The Cranberries, The Corrs, Sinead O’Connor, Ronan Keating and Enya.

All the music and songs in Eireborne are 100 percent live, performed on stage by musicians, with no backing tracks.

Dancers from legendary Irish shows Riverdance and Lord of The Dance kick up their heels performing traditional and modern Irish dance, as well as ballroom and tap dance.

Meet the locals, listen to their stories, clap your hands and sing along to the incredible list of hits.

Fronting the dance ensemble is former Riverdance cast member, Peta Anderson. Along with co-directing the production, Peta’s chore-ography showcases her unique ability to fuse the

styles of Irish dance with tap rhythms and beats.

Take your seats, strap yourself in and prepare to be ‘Eireborne’ at this concert that puts a modern spin on all things Irish.
