618 Eighth St. Columbus, IN 47201 (812) 372-2851 September, 2016 Volume XXIII, Number 9 September 1 st will mark the 25 th anniversary of my formal ministry. I began serving three country churches in Owen County on 9/1/1991. I have been reflecting upon those years and the many fond memories I have from each parish. Although brevity prohibits great detail, let me offer some insights on what I have learned in those years. #1 Wherever you may be, look for the goodness. I could tell you the challenges and difficulties of the diverse congregations I served. But the truth is, they all had their beauty and goodness and faithfulness. I preferred to focus my attention there and build upon that goodness. #2 Seek wise counsel. Within each location, there was a lot of wisdom. I just had to be humble enough to seek it out and listen to it. Sometimes these were long-time members, the patriarchs and matriarchs of the churches. Sometimes they were folks outside the church who offered meaningful insights. There is always lots of wisdom to be found. #3 Care for the people. It is simple but true. I recall a survey taken about 20 years ago. When asked what characteristic people most wanted in a pastor, caring was the number one answer. If people know that you care, they will find it easier to overlook other flaws. But if they sense that you really don’t care for them, it doesn’t matter how great a preacher you may be or how insightful your Bible studies may be. #4 Do not be afraid of conflict. Few, if any of us, really enjoy conflict. It is stressful and anxiety ridden. I’m sure I have picked up a few extra grey hairs and lost hours of sleep due to conflicts. But, conflict can be a source of growth. Amid conflict I have learned to be a non-anxious presence, to listen carefully and maintain good balance in order that I might be a healthy leader. Conflict is inevitable, so it serves us well to learn how to manage those moments in healthy ways. #5 Trust in God’s presence. In every location, there were events I did not anticipate and some I would have avoided at all costs. But, even in those unexpected adventures, God was present and led us in new pathways of faithfulness. #6 Do worship well. Sunday morning is the touchstone of every congregation. It needs to be done with great planning and integrity. #7 Be willing to admit when you’re wrong. Trust me, there have been plenty of moments where I thought I was doing the right thing only to discover that it wasn’t. In all of life, we need the humility to admit our faults and ask for forgiveness. #8 Be forgiving. One cannot expect to be forgiven if we are not willing to forgive. The church is a wonderful laboratory to practice the things we believe…loving one another, forgiving one another, living with kindness and compassion toward one another. #9 Never stop learning. If we had to trust our seminary education to teach us everything we need to know before entering the parish, we would never begin our ministry. The same is true for all of life… parenting, marriage, work, etc. It is best to be open to the learning opportunities and lessons life offers along the way. #10 Have fun along the way. I believe that when Jesus said he came that we might have life and have it abundantly, that meant that we were meant to have fun on this journey of life. Looking back at 25 years of ministry, I have had some wonderful encounters, some inspiring moments, the chance to be in ministry alongside some great congregations, including this current one. And, though there have been some moments that were less than enjoyable, there has been a lot of good along the way and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. There are many other things that come to mind. At some point I may learn the gift of brevity, but perhaps that is one of the lessons that awaits in the future. Pace bene (peace and all good things), Howard

Volume XXIII, Number 9

September 1st will mark the 25th anniversary of my formal ministry.

But, even in

those unexpected adventures, God was present and led us in new pathways of faithfulness.

The same is true for all of life…parenting, marriage, work, etc.

Blessing of the Animals

Our pets are an important part of our families. They are a blessing to us. On Saturday, October 1

st we are

going to offer a blessing to them. This old ritual, typically done in early October to coincide with St. Francis of Assisi’s birthday, is an opportunity to offer a simple blessing to the animals in our lives. You can bring your pet…dogs, cats, turtles, gerbils, snakes, llamas, etc. to the green space north of the church where we will bless your pet. The service begins at 10 a.m. and is open to everyone.

Travelers

Class

Sept. 11th and 18th, we will continue joining the class on "Half Truths" by Adam Hamilton, led by Pastor Lisa and Sarah Campbell in South Fellowship Hall at 10:10 a.m. (no class on Labor Day weekend)

Sept. 25th, we will be back in the Blue Room with Susan Pickens facilitating on a Wired Word topic of her choice.

Book Club

The selection for the September book club is Frederik Backman’s novel, “A Man Called Ove.” This international best seller tells the story of a man most people consider to be the grumpiest man you could ever meet. Woven with humor and heart-warming encounters, we begin to see Ove in a new light. We will discuss this book on Sunday, September 18

th at 6:00 p.m. here at the church. You

can purchase discounted copies of the book at the Viewpoint Bookstore.

The week of July 18th, 2016, 19 of the youth plus 6 brave adults ventured out into the world of Alive! Early Tuesday, we worked at a homeless shelter, washing walls and windows, gardening, and organizing the food pantry. We really learned a lot about how much our help meant later when we came back with more food for them. Starting Wednesday, we went to the music festival. We heard so many great bands and speakers, that even though the humidity was probably over 100%, we had tons of fun. We heard Skillet, Casting Crowns, For King and Country, Rend Collective, and many more. We played lots of card games, frisbee, and took some naps. We also swam in the giant lake that contained amazing floating obstacle courses. All of us had a ton of fun and made many new friends. We would like to give a great thanks to all those brave souls who volunteered to chaperone the trip and to all of the congregation for your gifts, prayer, and support through our journey! Hope you had fun hearing stories and watching our video from the trip!

2016 Clothe-A-Child

The 2016 Clothe-A-Child program has officially come to a close. It was just a few weeks ago that our campaign was beginning, and the excitement and anticipation of a new school year was upon us. However, for some families, the school year brings feelings of anxiety and dread. The financial burdens of getting children ready for school can create a hardship on a family’s already limited budget. Parents may have to choose between daily necessities or buying clothes and shoes for their children. This is why FUMC’s Clothe-A-Child program is an important and vital community outreach mission, and has been a steadfast tradition for 35 years.

Clothes are very important to children, whether the clothes are for school, gym, play, a special occasion, or just to look like other children. When a child has new and comfortable clothes, it can make a positive difference in his or her outlook and attitude about themselves, their daily life, and how they are perceived by their peers. Our program helps to provide school clothes for children of families who need some assistance as the school year begins. Clothe-A-Child is funded totally by your gracious and generous contributions, and it our honor and privilege to serve these families. We understand that giving and serving others is a powerful and joyful gesture, and a privilege that God calls us to do. Each person who serves becomes an instrument through which the goodness of God flows to others. This selfless generosity helps fuel further love and generosity and demonstrates our faith to God, who gives to us unconditionally.

Our Clothe-A-Child shoppers play a tremendous role in the success of this program. These wonderful shoppers have the pleasure of directly interacting with the families for their personal shopping experience. The shoppers arrange the time and place to meet with the families, provide assistance in the selections and decisions of the clothes for the children, and have the opportunity to meet with the parents, grandparents, and their children. It can be a time to share a little bit of their day with them, support them, and just enjoy the adventure. Shopping can be challenging and time-consuming, but the rewards of this experience can enrich our lives, as well as the lives of others. Shopping for school clothes may seem like a small act of kindness, but it may be the most important act that has happened to someone else. The families are always deeply grateful for the clothes and shoes they receive. The gratitude and appreciation of the parents and grandparents and their children is expressed in warm and sincere thanks, smiles, hugs, and sometimes even tears of joy. So our praises and thanks to this year’s shoppers: A great big thank you to Annie Tennis, Linda Cutrell, Katie Jerome, Julie Pruitt, and Rita and Darold Bass. Thank you for your enthusiasm, dedication, and compassion.

The impact of Clothe-A-Child is felt not only by those who receive, but also by those who give. When we give freely of ourselves and our abundance, we affirm God’s presence in our lives. God’s love and light grows in us, and we are aware of the infinite blessings that God gives to us. Thank you once again, to all of you, for your continued commitment, prayers, and support of our Clothe-A-Child mission. We have blessed others, and in turn, we are blessed for the experience. God is so good, all the time.
