Right now, I’m sad that
summer is winding down, but I
sure am looking forward to cooler
weather. I hope this was a season
of renewal for you. As we return
from our summer travels refreshed;
remember, once again, to bring a
small container of whatever
refreshing water you visited this
summer on Sunday, the 11th. With
the water, we bring back to our
fellowship our new experiences,
new insights, and new energy. In
this congregation, this first Sunday
back from summer used to be
“Homecoming.” In honor of the
275th birthday of this congregation,
we are calling our celebration
“Homecoming” and in order to be
historically accurate we will have a
picnic on the green after worship.
Dress casually for church, and
bring a side dish to share. The
deacons will be grilling burgers and
hot dogs! The Youth Group is
organizing games on the Green –
how about water-balloon toss, three
-legged races, and volley ball?
And now that you are refreshed
and energized, many special events

Honoring Our Work, Blessing of the Tools
Our annual Labor Day Sunday joint service with Salem Covenant Church
will be held Sunday, September 4 at 10:30 am in the pavilion behind
Washington Primary School - Rain or Shine!
What is an iconic tool representing what you do for work? Bring
one of yours that is lightweight and portable - either one of the
primary tools you use or something that is symbolic of that work:
laptop, date book, smart phone, hammer, backpack, etc.
Join us as we break bread with others in the greater community - and
bring a friend to share in the blessing. Pastor Cheryl will give the sermon
and will lead the service along with Rev. Linda Williams. Come and join
us for this casual outdoor service!
By the Rev. Cheryl Anderson, Pastor
(Continued from page 1)
The month of September will
feature multiple choirs, a guest
vocalist and uilleann pipes.
On the 4th Jesse Ofgang will be
playing uilleann pipes as part of
the 10:30 am joint service with the
Salem Covenant Church at the pavilion behind the
Washington Primary School.
On the 11th the chancel choir will be singing
for Homecoming (aka the mixing of the waters).
On the 18th we are thrilled to have the Teen
Challenge Choir return. Those who heard them
last year would agree that their performance is
both musically invigorating and inspirational.
The 25th will feature a guest vocalist.
LOOKING AHEAD…
In October, for the celebration of the First
Congregational Church of Washington's 275th
birthday, we will be selecting music from four
different centuries - from the time the church was
founded through contemporary.
The Handbell Choir and the Chancel Choir
welcomes new members throughout the year. If
you are interested in becoming involved with our
music program please contact Jesse Ofgang or
Michelle Gorra.

and opportunities await your
refreshed energy here at First
Congregational.
Youth Programs: A two-year
confirmation program will begin
on homecoming Sunday with a
brief orientation meeting for
parents and students while the
picnic is getting set up.
Confirmation class meets once a
month on the second Sunday of
the month for an hour after
worship.
“Teen Talk” will also meet
after the picnic. This is a
discussion group for high school
students – the confidential nature
of the conversations requires
trust-building among the group,
so it is only open to new members
the first session and again at the
beginning of January. So come
and give it a try; and if you think
you are interested but can’t come
on the 11th, let Emily Samuelson
or Ellen Willert know so that you
can start a week late.
Youth Group, for grades 6
through 12 will resume meeting
on the fourth Sunday of each
month from 5:00 til 7:00 pm.
Youth Group is always open to
new members and visitors so
bring your friends.
Adult Programs: The
Wednesday Bible Study will
resume on September 14,
10:30am. We will begin the year
reading John Dominic Crossan’s
book, The Greatest Prayer:
Rediscovering the Revolutionary
Message of The Lord’s Prayer.
You can order the book at the
Hickory Stick or get a used copy
at Amazon. Read the Prologue
and first chapter for our first
meeting.
I will once again be
leading a meditation group at the
Gunn Library this fall. We will
meet on Tuesdays at 11:00
upstairs in the Wykeham Room
starting on October 4 and
continuing for six weeks.
In worship, we have a full
schedule of inspiring music and
interesting special events. On
September 18, the Teen
Challenge choir will return to
provide inspiring music and
testimonies. On October 4, we
are planning a Blessing of the
Animals down at Steep Rock in
the afternoon. We need
volunteers to staff a table to
welcome everyone and we also
need blessers. All through
October, we will be celebrating
our 275th with a series of
historical services. On October 2,
we will taste what worship was
like in the 18th century. On
October 9, we will move into the
19th century with the return of
Rev. William Henry Harrison
Murray. On October 16, we will
recreate a service from 1950. On
the last two Sundays, we will
move into the 21st century and
experience some contemporary
worship. Each Sunday, the
prayers and music will reflect the
time period and all are invited to
dress the part. I’m especially
looking forward to seeing us
all back in 1950. Stay tuned.
There is more to come about
all these opportunities as
they get closer. Come to be
refreshed and get energized this
fall. See you in church!

Missions Co-Chairs
For generations, the First Congregational church on Washington Green has always taken seriously and
cheerfully our Christian responsibility to those who are in need, whether they live nearby or in the far corners of the
Earth. Members and anyone in the community are welcome and encouraged to participate in the ministries we support.
Through our many missions, spiritual and charitable, we enjoy helping those who are less fortunate in many
ways. Our church makes regular commitments, financial and hands-on, to many local efforts to improve the lives of the
less fortunate. The full list is available in a handout at the church and will be available on our website.
Here are some volunteer opportunities we enjoy participating in, and we encourage others to join us:
Periodically, we assemble School Kits and Hygiene Kits for distribution through Church World Services (CWS).
School kits give children in impoverished communities and refugee camps the basic tools for learning. Hygiene
kits make all the difference between health and sickness for struggling families in many circumstances throughout
the world. Our Youth Group held a public kit-packing recently at the Sister Susies Allied Market on the Green.
Every fifth Thursday (about five times a year) a group of us volunteer to cook and serve meals at Loaves and Fishes
of New Milford. Volunteering involves donating food items or helping serve the meal. A sign-up sheet is in the
church hall or on our website or e-Newsletter.
Throughout the year we collect and donate non-perishable food items to the New Milford Food Bank, managed by
New Milford Social Services, which offers a weekly drop-in food program. Our shopping cart is located in the
hallway near the main entrance to our Parish House. A list of items needed is available near the cart. Items can be
dropped off any time the building is open.
An annual Coat drive (in October), to provide warm clothes for the homeless through Church Street Eats, a
ministry of Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal) in Hartford. A collection box is located in the Parish House coat
closet. You may drop off clean, gently used coats any time the building is open during October.
Every November, two Saturdays before Thanksgiving, we hold our annual Harvest Dinner. This dinner is a great
community social event with delicious food cooked with love and laughter but it is foremost a fundraiser for local
charities. These vary from year to year but have included food and fuel bank organizations, Friends in Service to
Humanity (FISH) in Torrington, etc.
Annual Christmas wreath sale (in November) to benefit Susan B Anthony Project in Torrington. SBA provides
crisis and support services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. All services are confidential, free,
and available 24/7. Wreaths can be ordered through the church office in late October through early November.
At Christmas time some of us particularly enjoy volunteering to help the Salvation Army in Waterbury with the
Angel Tree Project, providing toys and other gifts for children of families in need. If you wish to sponsor a
child with a gift, please contact us by early November or stop by and pick a tag off the tree and sign the tag log.
More details will be available at that time.
Also at Christmas, we have supported the Winchester YMCA Shelter in Winsted by hosting a Christmas party for
any families with children currently staying at the shelter. Annually, we also provide funds for upkeep and
maintenance of one of the family shelter rooms. Christmas memorials for “shelter” help provide that support.
New Milford Homeless Shelter - During the colder months, The New Milford Homeless Shelter provides a safe,
warm place to sleep for those in need of it. Some of us volunteer to sleep over, which is an essential element of the
program, and more enjoyable than it sounds. If you are interested in helping out there, please contact Rufus at
(860) 592-0142 for details. New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition, Inc., PO Box 1016, New Milford, CT 06776
Along with many in our Washington community, our members participate in the Judea Garden. Find out more
about how you can help by going to www.SteepRockAssoc.org/Judea-Garden/
Part of our members’ regular donations to the church also goes to support various missions, both local and global, with
annual monetary contributions. For a more complete list of the organizations we support, with labor or financially, but
always with love and prayer, contact the church office or check our Missions page on the website.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Again this year, at least until we hire our new Christian Education Superintendent, Sunday School
will be staffed by caring members of our congregation. The wonderful lessons our children participate in
will continue to be crafted and planned by Anne Low.
As of this writing, we are still accepting resumes and applications for the CE Superintendent. A full
job description is available through a link on our website home page or by contacting the church office.
Bible Study resumes on Wednesday, Sept 14 at 10:30 am. We will be reading John Dominic
Crossan’s book, The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of The Lord’s Prayer.
You can order the book at the Hickory Stick or get a used copy at Amazon. Read the Prologue and first
chapter for our first meeting. All are welcome to this lively and interesting group!
Welcome Back, Youth Group!
Youth Group will be starting up again on Sunday, September 25th at 5pm!
The First Congregational Church of Washington's Youth Group is for grades 6-12 and
all are welcome! We meet on the last Sunday of every month from 5-7 pm at the Parish
House. Every meeting involves a group discussion focusing on the current month's faith
practice, food, games, and much more. If you have any friends who may be interesting in
joining us, bring them along!!
Any questions? Please contact Emelie Samuelson, Mike Burl, or the Church office.
Teen Talk!
All youth in grades 9-12 are welcome. The purpose of this group is to create a safe space for high
schoolers to come and discuss their lives and their faith. In order to maintain that safety, this group
will only be open to new members twice a year: once in September and once in January. If
you are interested in joining this group, please email Emelie at the address below and let me know so
that I can put you on the email list for the September meeting, which will be on Sunday, September
11th in the Youth Room after church.
Parents: If you have any questions or concerns or just want to have a conversation about either of these
programs, Mike, Ellen, and I are always willing to talk and would love to hear from you. You can
approach us at church, email us, or call us at any time. For those interested in the Teen Talk program,
we will have a more informative letter available about the way the group operates at the initial meeting
in September.

Hopefully, over the summer in whatever place you went to recharge (experience
Sabbath), you saved a small amount of water in a bottle. From a lake, a stream, an
ocean, or your kitchen tap! Be sure to bring it along and share highlights of your
experiences as we begin another year of exploring and celebrating together.

Teen Challenge Choir - Music and testimony during the worship service on Sept 18
Blessing our congregation with inspiring music and testimonies of transformed lives!
A Teen Challenge choir visited us last summer and everyone who was there thought they were absolutely
wonderful! The music is amazing and testimonies very moving. The students share personal stories of
God’s great love and mercy that is transforming their lives. Through the music and testimonies, you will
walk away with renewed hope to face your own challenges and struggles: “For nothing is impossible with
God!” (Luke 1:37). Come to church on Sunday, September 18 at 10 am and hear
• Uplifting songs that encourage
• Stirring testimonies of God changing lives and situations

The First Congregational Church of Washington, Connecticut
Back by popular demand! Pastor Cheryl will lead another 6-week
meditation program this fall in the Wykeham Room. Silent meditation is a
holistic approach to living in balance with greater equanimity and more fulfilling
interpersonal relationships.
We will be introduced to several different forms of meditation – simple techniques to
quiet the mind and calm the heart. Each week, we will discuss our individual practice and
spend time together in silent meditation.
The Reverend Cheryl P. Anderson has been Pastor of the First Congregational Church of
Washington for 19 years. She has practiced meditation for 44 years. She is certified to lead
Contemplative Prayer groups and retreats and regularly leads spiritual practice groups at
the church. She has had training in Transcendental Meditation, Vipassana or Mindfulness
Meditation, as well as Centering or Contemplative Prayer. Her own practice utilizes what
she has learned from all of them to maintain her equanimity and expand her capacity to
love.
When: Tuesdays at 11 am beginning October 4.
Where: They Wykeham Room at the Gunn Library
Inner Peace for These Troubled Times
