MARCH FOR LIFE 2016: Last year we filled nine charter buses with students who joined our pilgrimage to the March for Life in Wash-ington, D.C. The students returned with a deeper sense of faith and a stronger commitment to building a culture of life here at St. Michael and in the greater Baton Rouge community. The total cost of the trip is around $500 for this six day trip to Washington, D.C., departing on the evening of Monday, January 23 and will return on the evening of Saturday, January 28. The cost is still being worked out so check out the website for a final price soon. Students may reserve his/her place on the trip by turning in a $100, non-refundable deposit to the office. You can also reserve your space with a specific request for financial aid if the registration fee is a significant barrier. Space is limited so don’t delay! All registration and trip information can be found at www.youthmarchforlife.org or you may contact Mrs. Froeba in the Campus Ministry office with any questions you may have. Finally, we will need some “March for Life Parents” who are willing to come on the trip and work as a team to coordinate logistics, luggage, and meals for the trip. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Froeba, [email protected] for more information on this important way you can support the youth on this life-changing experience.
LETTERS TO SHUT-INS: The freshmen will be earning “A” hours by writing letters to shut-ins in the St. Michael community and in the greater Baton Rouge area. If you know an elderly friend or relative who would appreciate receiving a monthly letter from a St. Michael student, please email Robin Haile at [email protected] with their information.
THE PRO VITA DINNER: Announcing the 8th Annual Pro Vita Dinner and Silent Auction benefiting hundreds of young people and semi-narians from around our diocese who will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this January for the March for Life. This year’s Pro Vita dinner will take place on Thursday, October 6, 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael High School gym. Come ready to be inspired by our guest, Sarah Zagorski, abortion survivor. Hear the impact of the March for Life Pilgrimage, and raise money to send Religious Sisters, Seminarians, Priests, and Youth to the D.C. March for Life in January. If you would like to purchase tickets, provide auction items or for more information, or to register visit www.youthmarchforlife.org or contact [email protected]

MAKE-UP DAYS: The St. Michael school calendar has three emergen-cy days that if used do not have to be made up. Since we were out of school for six days during the recent flood, we will have to make up the remaining three days. The following days will be make-up days for the St. Michael calendar:
Monday, September 19 – regular school day
Friday, October 7 – regular school day
Wednesday, January 4 – regular school day
COLLEGE QUESTIONS ANSWERED: During the last few weeks of August, Mrs. Stephanie Boudreaux, Senior Counselor & College Advi-sor, has met with all Religion IV classes to discuss the college admissions process and how to search for scholarships/financial aid, as well as to dis-cuss other aspects pertaining to college with the senior class. Each senior has been encouraged to meet with Mrs. Boudreaux to discuss their journey to life after high school. Please encourage your senior to make an appoint-ment with his/her senior counselor this fall. Deadlines are fast approaching!
COLLEGES VISITING SMHS: Throughout the fall, admissions representatives from a number of colleges and universities will be visiting our school in order to share information with prospective students. Emails or announcements will be sent to seniors by Mrs. Stephanie Boudreaux, alerting students of these opportunities. Please continue to monitor your email, Moodle, and the SMHS Online Calendar for dates/times of upcom-ing events held at St. Michael.
COLLEGE VISITATION DAY: On Wednesday, October 19th, sen-iors will not have school so that they may visit a college or university of their choice. Although each college and university establishes its own rules in regards to arranging an official visit, students may begin by contacting the Office of Admissions or Office of Enrollment Services for assistance in planning their campus tour. Check college or university websites for con-tact information and news on upcoming events. We encourage each senior to take a campus tour to gain valuable information to support their college decisions!
PERMISSION FOR COLLEGE VISITS: In addition to our Col-lege Visitation Day (October 19th), seniors will be granted one additional college visit with administrative approval. When a student is planning a college visit other than on October 19th, his/her parent(s) must forward a written request to Mr. Paul Varnado, Dean of Students. The student should also submit a letter of verification of attendance that will be provided by the college or university upon request. This document must be submitted to the SMHS Front Office the day immediately following the student’s absence. Mr. Varnado will consider the requested information prior to and following the event in order to decide whether or not an educational ex-cused absence will be granted. Please refer to the SMHS Student/Parent

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
SMHS SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
St. Michael High School students put their school-year theme “Warriors Do the Impossible” into action by collect-
ing back-to-school supplies for other students in the diocese, but as the flood happened, we were able to serve our
own families with many of the supplies we received. More than 1000 supplies were collected and donated to area
Catholic elementary schools. The senior class won their first spirit points by collecting the most supplies overall
with Mr. O’Mara’s homeroom winning top class by bringing in over 200 items. This annual drive is just one of the
many examples of the school’s year-round Christian service program that involves St. Michael students giving back
to others.
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
“Warriors Do the Impossible! For Nothing is Impossible with God.” Our theme for the year called each of us in the St. Michael High School community to be the hands, the feet, and the face of Jesus to our neighbors, friends, and even strangers. After less than a week of school, we were challenged to do the impossible by re-covering from flooded homes and businesses or by lending a hand to help those in need. You can be so proud of your students and of our SMHS faculty and staff. They answered the call to help those in need. So many stories to tell, so many young men and young women to be proud of, so much to be grateful for. For those of you in recovery, please be assured of our continued prayers and support.
Our first orientation day on Friday, August 5, seemed to be a big hit. Students could get their supplies and re-ceive computer training before classes began. Freshmen were able to run an abbreviated schedule and meet their teachers. All students seemed to be better prepared for the first day of class after having gone through the orientation process.
The entire school celebrated the end of the first full week of school on September 26 by gathering in the front parking lot to enjoy popsicles and some down time with friends. Our Club Day, School Supply Drive, and Football Jamboree were all a big success. Father Eddie Martin and Father Brad Doyle, our co-chaplains, cele-brated our first all-school Mass. The St. Michael Fall Honors Assembly was held the last week of August. In the presence of their peers, students were recognized for their academic accomplishments from the previous school year. Three new scholarships were awarded and new National Honor Society members were inducted. We look forward to celebrating more of our achievements as the school year progresses.
I hope that you noticed our newly completed permanent sign and lighted bus stop in the front of school. These two additions to our campus will enhance the beauty and utility of St. Michael High School. Our Capital Cam-paign to raise money for our new building and planned renovations is nearly complete. Just $1.5 million to go. Please join us. We need every family to make a pledge and become a part of Continuing the Warrior Legacy. We also need volunteers to help make this a success. Please contact the SMHS Advancement Office to volun-teer.
The start of the school year reminds us just how fortunate we are to be able to offer a top-quality, Catholic edu-cation to our students. The faculty, staff, and administration join together with the Catholic Church and with all of our parents to complete our mission, which is to foster the spiritual, intellectual, and the personal devel-opment of each and every one of our students. We ask you to join us in prayer as we set our students on a path to become committed disciples of Christ.
Yours in Christ,
Ellen B. Lee
