What is your position on the Volleyball team?

Mainly right side and occasionally left side.

What are some of the most important characteristics and skills necessary for your position on the team?

All skills! Serving, hitting, defence, passing, blocking. Right and left sides are more all-around, and are not as specialized as libero, setter, or middle blocker/hitter. One important skill is the ability to read the opponent and play smart. Resilience and mental strength are also important characteristics in volleyball for all positions on the team.

What was the most important lesson that you learned as a player at PanAm and World Championships and how has it helped you?

Playing in a high stakes game was the most valuable technical learning experience for me. It showed me how important it is to play real volleyball games as often as possible. In a casual volleyball game, the points don’t matter because the philosophy is that having fun is what counts. So in a casual team, I find myself slacking more, making more errors, and not developing as much as I could. Playing in PanAm / World Championships has helped me to be more motivated to find a more challenging local team to play in as part of my training.

What was it like to play and interact with other players from other countries?

It was a lot of fun! Every team’s playing style was different and we had to learn how to modify our strategy to give the other players more challenge.

What’s the best way to psych out your opponent?

I have noticed that usually it is the best player on the opposing team that gets frustrated when they make mistakes point after point. The best way to take advantage of that is to make our attacks unpredictable. For example, we could start by hitting hard and pushing opponent defense to the back of the court, then we can start tipping closer to the net into the empty space.

How did you get started playing volleyball and what advice would you have for our readers who are just getting started?

I first started in junior high and did not play again until I was in grade 12, when Kim Summers organized a weekly volleyball scrimmage in Edmonton. From there, I joined Team Alberta and eventually made it to Team Canada. If you’re just getting started, my advice is to have a desire to continually learn and improve from your mistakes.

September 2016

Interview with Gregory Bradford (Volleyball)

What was the most important lesson that you learned as a player at PanAm and World Championships and how has it helped you? I learnt as a player while playing at PanAm and World Championships, win or lose, it did not matter as long as I gave my heart and energy in games and with the team. It did helped me and my team because we played one of our best games as a team in the 7th and 8th playoff game against India at the World Championships. That made me wanting to continue playing with Team Canada Deaf Men’s Volleyball in the future tournaments. What is your position on the Volleyball team? Setter What are some of the most important characteristics and skills necessary for your position on the team? Leadership, Athleticism and Quick decision-maker. One of the most important skills a setter must have is to be able to communicate with teammates and coaches when on and off the volleyball court. What was it like to play and interact with other players from other countries? It was quite challenge playing against some players that were so skilled but I learned a lot from watching how they play. Interacting with players from different counties was a lot of fun. Their sign language was unique but I picked up some quick and will never forget the time that I had with them. When you are doing training/conditioning, what does a typical training session consist of? I have my own personal trainer who has been helping me a lot with my upper, lower and core workouts. Typical training session consists of squats, deadlifts, bench press, leg press, running and nutrients. What is the one thing you do before a game? Eat banana before each game so that I do not get hungry when playing!! Who’s the funniest person on the team? Vishal Singh for Canada Men and Erin Ramsay for Canada Women What’s the best way to psych out your opponent? What will drive the opponent crazy is that I will always attempt to dig the volleyball each and every time I have the chance to. How did you get started playing volleyball and what advice would you have for our readers who are just getting started? Played competitive volleyball when I was in High School. My advices for the readers that are just getting started is to join volleyball club, volleyball camps and school volleyball teams. Do not stop playing volleyball but also play other sports as well. The more you play, the better you will be.

WHAT ARE T HE BEST EXPERIENCES YOU HAD AT PAN-AM AND W ORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS?

“Watched and played against some strong deaf men volleyball teams from different countries, met and made some quick friends, played volleyball at the international level and gained experience, toured Washington D.C. a little bit

and got to see Canada Embassy and Air and Space Museum.”

7

September 2016 Interview with Madeline Brinkmann (Volleyball)

What was the most important lesson that you learned as a player at PanAm and World Championships and how has it helped you? The most important lesson that these competitions have taught me is that if I make a mistake, there is no use dwelling on it. Use that mistake, and learn from it. What is your position on the Volleyball team? My primary position is Libero. What are some of the most important characteristics and skills necessary for your position on the team? The Libero needs to be mentally strong and able to pass a settable ball off a tough serve or hit, in a high pressure game. What was it like to play and interact with other players from other countries? On the court it was challenging, intense and exciting playing against the other countries. Off the court all the players I talked to from the other countries were extremely nice and fun to talk to. When you are doing training/conditioning, what does a typical training session consist of? A typical training session at training camps usually consists of a mix of basic skill drills, and conditioning with a little more emphasis on game and team play. What is the one thing you do before a game? Sit off by myself and mentally imagine the different scenarios that might occur in the game, and visualize how my body will react. Who’s the funniest person on the team? Either Julia or Serena. Both have their moments of being hilarious. What’s the best way to psych out your opponent? Although it is more difficult to psych out your opponent in volleyball, what I do is celebrate hard after every single point we get on the court. I’ll celebrate hard even if it is an easy point, such as the other team hits it out, or serves the ball into the net. Since volleyball is such a momentum based sport, the extra celebration and jumping usually sucks momentum away from the other team. How did you get started playing volleyball and what advice would you have for our readers who are just getting started? I started playing volleyball in Junior High by trying out for the junior team on a whim. From there I loved it and have played club volleyball since. My main advice for those who are just getting started is to not get discouraged and quit if cut from a team. Even if not on a team, skills can be improved. Pass and set to yourself, or against a wall. In general just try to get as many touches as you can.

WHAT ARE T HE BEST EXPERIENCES YOU HAD AT PAN-AM AND W ORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS?

“Although winning bronze at PanAms was a pretty awesome experience, some of the best experiences I had would be when I , or someone else has made a truly incredible save, and then getting the point at

the end of the rally.”
