Pastor Mary Anne’s Message …
Do you like surprises? Are you that type of person who welcomes a sur-
prise party or unexpected guests, or do you prefer to know what is
coming, plan for it and live by a predictable schedule? I generally do
not like surprises, even surprise parties, but I will admit that I am delight-
ed by nice surprises, and in that I know I am not alone!
We like good news and surprises if they will benefit us, but not if they
embarrass or stress us!
So how do we fare with the good news of the Gospel, the surprise of
the cross? Are we embarrassed by our faith or stressed by living out a
Christian life, or do we like the Gospel because we feel it benefits us?
There is no doubt that the power of the cross was foolishness to the
leaders of Jesus’ day, and that this chief symbol of ridicule and scorn
should become a symbol of God love and grace, was beyond any-
one’s guessing. The cross was a real surprise to the people then, and
God continues to surprise us with his grace and Good News! While this
good news saves and definitely benefits us, we glory not in that we are
saved but that God saves us in spite of ourselves and our weakness!
We have God surprising us with his grace in his word and
sacraments, and in his community, and yes, in those God
Moments as well! Continue to be amazed and surprised
by the Good News of the Gospel, that the cross and
tomb are empty, and love wins! Surprise others by sharing
that grace!
In Christ,
Pastor Mary Anne
