Message from our President
Here it is September and we are
three quarters into the year! 2015 is almost history. WOW!
August was highlighted by our tour
to Columbia to the Fallon House The-
ater for a presentation of the musical
“The Music Man.” Eighteen people
joined us for the play and dinner af-
terwards.
Roger and Joyce Williams drove their
new old car, a beautiful customized
Big Bird. The big beauty was well
scrutinized by all present. It is an ar-
tistic, well done, creation, inside and
out.

September Car of
the Month
One day in March 2009 I remembered that in 1956 I wanted to own a 1956
T-bird because of its cool continental kit. Since I was in the 8th grade that
dream had to wait. So when I decided that the time had arrived I looked
online and discovered Specialty Sales, a consignment dealer had seven
1955-1957 T-birds. Fortunately the best of the seven was a salmon colored
1956 model.
After the purchase I proceeded to find the Modesto Thunderbird Club’s
website. I called the listed phone number and soon was talking to Earl
Reedy. He informed me that the color of my car was Fiesta Red. He ex-
plained that the factory did not do a good job of mixing paint that year
and the true Fiesta Red appeared on the 1957 Birds. Personally I love the
color no matter the formal name.
My luck continued when during the purchase the salesman handed me a
large manila envelope full of receipts the owner had kept since 1977. I
learned that the car was purchased by William Northrop at age 65 from
Ladd Ford in Venice, California. He died in 1971 and the estate sold the car
to 56 year old Phil Wick on October 27, 1977. In June of 1976 the engine
was rebuilt with 72809 miles on it. Mr. Wick kept every receipt for every
oil change and repair. The odometer was 4852 when I bought the car and I
assumed that it was 204852 miles. The receipts indicated that the true
mileage was 104852. Mr. Wick spared no expense to keep the T-Bird in ex-
cellent condition. He died in 1999 and the car was in his daughter’s garage
in San Ramon until March 2009 when she decided to sell it. During the ten
years in San Ramon it was only driven 900 miles. Mr. Wick averaged 1400
miles a year during his ownership, and I am averaging 900 miles a year.
So I am fortunate to own a 59 year old car that was always kept in a gar-
age and rarely driven. It has not been restored and has its original paint.
Mechanically it is in good condition.
I enjoy the Bird the most driving around town with the top off. Jim

Vice President’s Report
Jim Montavon
Hello Birders,
Donna and I had a great time with Joe and Sandy and their friends at Hot August
Nights Reno. Lots of really nice little birds; one very nice 56 sold at the Barrett
Jackson auction for $49,000. We looked for George Hatcher’s 1957 T-Bird but un-
fortunately did not see it.
Pat Mason, Joe and Sandy took in the Fallen Heroes Car Show at the Stanislaus
Sheriff’s office on Saturday, August 15th. I understand it was very well organized.
Likewise, Joe and Sandy took in the Del Rio Car Show the next day which as a very
hot Sunday. Thanks for putting up with the heat and representing the club!
Donna and I (including the red Impala that was not allowed to park with the T-
Birds), Ken and Roberta, Ruben and Katrina, Don and Jan, Jack and Janis (with their
beautiful Model A), and Jim Ridenour all showed up at English Oaks for their annual
little gathering on August 21st. I am sure the residents enjoyed and appreciated us
bringing out our classics. Jim Ridenour’s white beauty was awarded second place
out of three awards for the best car. Way to go Jim!
Special THANKS to Don and Darlene for organizing and hosting the Columbia
Theatre play and dinner. Another great memory with our T-Bird club.
On to September and more fun. See you at the meeting!

SCAN ALERT ON
CRAIGSLIST
The National Insurance
Crime Bureau issued a
warning about car sales
on Craigslist. The scams
are well organized and
have all the appearances
of being legitimate. In
the end the criminal gets
the car and the sellers
are left on the hook.
NBIS advises to avoid ac-
cepting any kind of
check, but if you do, take
the time to make sure
any alleged bank or cash-
ier’s check has actually
cleared and you have the
cash. Never sign over a
title until you have cash
in hand. Craigslist has
specific guidelines you
can read at
www.craigslist.org/
about/scams.
