At our meeting on 14th July we heard an amusing talk by AlanMinnery entitled “Confessions of a Scouser”.

On August 12th we had an outing, the transport kindly providedby members. We visited Rug Chapel in Corwen, which was built in1637. The interior, although small, was breathtakingly beautiful. It is a lasting legacy of true craftsmen. From there we went to thePonderosa Restaurant on the Horseshoe Pass, where we choselunches from the extensive, and very reasonably priced menu.

At our September 8th meeting we will have "An Afternoon with PamAyres and friend".

Please join us at 2pm.

Vale of Clwyd ClassicSHOWDOWN TIME !

This year’s Vale of a Clwyd Classic sees the 60 plus classic cars descendingon Llanferres on the evening of Friday 4th September with the safetychecks being undertaken at Loggerheads Garage from 5.30pm and thendocumentation in the Druid Inn until 9pm.

This year’s event has again attracted the great and the good from the UKand Ireland and sees a top fifteen from which any winner could emerge. The HRCR national championship is on a knife edge , whilst the navigatorof Car 1 , Iain Tullie has won the championship, the driver’s title comesdown to a winner takes all between Howard Warren in Car 1, a 1965Porsche 911 who has to repeat his win of last year to secure the title, andSteve Entwhistle in Car 4, a mini effectively known as the "Orangebox".These two crews are tied for the lead and the calculations for who can winhave been discussed at length in the championship contingency!

The first cars leave the Druid Inn at 8.15am and head to the LoggerheadsCountry Park car park for the first test before a regularity section ( thisbeing where the crews follow a secret route issued to them 5 mins beforethe start where they have to maintain a low average speed from 15 to 28mph dependant on the roads being used and they will come acrosscheckpoints which they have to arrive at a specific time) . The top crewsare now so good that they normally arrive at these controls within 1 or 2seconds of the ideal time. So as you see the cars who will drive back pastthe Druid at about 8.45am, most navigators will have their heads downchecking maps and average speed tables .

The cars then take in sections and special tests throughout the Vale ofClwyd before a late lunch halt at the White House at Rhaullt. The cars thencomplete the section around Babell and Lixwm before coming back overMoel Arthur into the Vale for the last section and finish up at the Druidfrom 4.30pm for supper and the prize giving .

We hope to see as usual the locals turn out to wave the cars off and ontheir return after a tough taxing but what I hope will be an enjoyable day.

Visit to Dove Cottage, Penyffordd

The above visit was scheduled for Monday the 13th July, 2015 but was postponedbecause of the inclement weather and rescheduled for the 20th July, 2015.Some of the original booked Gardening Club Members were unable to go on that nightbut 12 members and friends arrived there. The gardens were situated near the railwayline to Wrexham. We were warmly greeted by Mrs Wallis who invited us to roam around the garden atour leisure. What variety of colour and well laid out gardens. The flower gardens were beautiful with neatly sculptured defined shaped borders. The vegetable patch was well stocked with a sample of potatoes lifted and left on thesoil for members to see.Fruit cages were full of raspberries and blueberries all looking very healthy. The pond looked good and the garden soil was a very rich dark colour which hadplenty of horse manure added to it regularly. In front of the house there were pots of black petunias which were very unusual. We had just finished our tour of the garden when the rain arrived and we were allinvited into the conservatory for delicious home made cakes, and tea or coffee.A very enjoyable visit. The Richardsons were a renowned family ofChester gold and silver smiths. Many of theircreations are exhibited in the GrosvenorMuseum in Chester.

One of the items listed in an inventory ofLlanferres church plate published in 1905was a silver chalice inscribed "The Gift ofAlice Lloyd, 1699, Llanferres". This had beencrafted by Richard Richardson I (1674-1730).

Richardson's son Richard Richardson II(1712-1769) developed an extensiveportfolio of copper and lead mines in northWales and also a strong interest in lead oresmelting. He had an interest in two leadmines in our community. The first was onColomendy land near Aberduna - it was not aprofitable investment. The other was theMaes-y-safn Mine in which he held a 3/24share. This was a good investment as themine was very productive for most of theperiod between 1740 and 1769. He alsoowned a half share in a small estate inLlanferres. This included land on the eastside of the River Alyn which contained part ofCascade Wood. A water wheel had beeninstalled on the river bank nearby and wasused to power pumps in the mine whichpumped water from the mine workings into adrainage level. This level drained into theriver a short distance downstream.

On his death his sons, Richard Richardson IV(1755-1822) and Ralph, took over hismining and smelting interests once theyreached adult hood. This interest continuedfor the rest of the century although the Maes-y-safn mine became increasingly

unproductive. However at the time of theLlanferres and Cilcen Enclosure Award(1801) they were in a position to claimallotments of land in Llanferres. Richard onaccount of the estate in Llanferres that he hadinherited from his father and Ralph on behalfof the (then defunct) Maes-y-safn miningcompany. The allotments were in theMaeshafn area and were swiftly sold to MrPotts of Glan rafon to add to his estate.

Richard Richardson IV purchased the Manorof Capenhurst in Cheshire . This ended theconnection of the Richardson family with ourcommunity.

Sadly the water wheel pit was destroyed afew years ago. This was probably the oldestindustrial relic in our community.

The Park is one of six managed green spaces in the county that have been awarded thehonour by Keep Wales Tidy in this year’s Green Flag Awards.

The Green Flag Award is awarded in recognition of high quality parks or green spaces. The location is judged by green space experts who volunteer their time to visit applicantsites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Although we have noofficial CountyCouncil meetings inAugust it has stillbeen a busy month. At county level I have

moved from the CorporateGovernance ( The Audit Committee )and I now sit on two ScrutinyCommittees namely Partnerships andCommunities. At my first PartnershipScrutiny meeting we had apresentation from the CooperateGroup who have won a contract fromthe Welsh Government to reducepoverty in Rhyl and to create jobs inthat area. Sadly large amounts ofEuropean Objective one money havealready been spent on similar projectswith little evidence of long term results.I am concerned that there is no way ofmeasuring how successful these sortsof projects are even when theobjectives are worthy ones. I am surethat it is just a coincidence that theeight million pounds being given toalleviate poverty in the county is asimilar figure to the eight million wehave had cut from Denbighshire'sbudget this year by Welsh Government.

We had hoped that Pen Y Waen wouldhave been resurfaced by now but extrawork was needed on drainage andgully problems before the new roadsurface could be laid. It is hoped thatthe resurfacing work will now takeplace in September.

The annual Tour of Britain will onceagain pass through Denbighshire thisyear. It will involve a rolling roadclosure and the riders will pass through

Loggerheads and Llanferres atapproximately 2.40 pm on Sunday 6thSeptember. If it is a fine day you will beable to pick your spot and watch themfly by and if you are planning to go outthat day you need to bear this in mind.

This month is the time of year forvillage shows but the weather has beenfar from kind to some of them. Sadlythe Eryrys tractor show was a dampevent this year and although they hadover seventy entries for the annualtractor run through neighbouringvillages everyone got very wet. TheLlanarmon Show was much luckier witha beautiful day and large crowds. Thismay have been helped by the plug theevent had on National TV when BBCbreakfast visited the village.I attended the village hall fundraisingevent in Llanferres on Saturday 15thAugust and our thanks should go to allthose members of the community whoworked very hard to make the event agreat success. I know that the villagehall committee are concerned aboutfinancing the hall in the future andeveryone can do their bit by promotingthe hall as a venue for events, parties, concerts, etc. We still have theLlanferres Garden Show and theLlandegla village show to look forwardto, both of which are on Saturday 5thSeptember.

I have received a number of calls aboutthe poor state of Rectory Lane and thedepth of some of the pot holes in thelower part of the road. The Countyclaim that it is an unadopted road (despite street lights) and as budgetsare tight they have to deal with other

We are still encountering problems atPot Hole Quarry Cliffs where youthshave been holding further overnightdrinking parties and bonfires. Theyhave left large amounts of litter, broken glass and camping equipmentbehind. Can I ask that if anyone seesbonfires at night in that area theyshould report them to the Police.

I hope that you all enjoy what is left ofour summer and that we have anIndian summer to make up for the lackof sunshine this year.

We thought you might be interestedto know that a new society has beenlaunched, which aims to bringtogether people who love thecountryside of the Clwydian Rangeand the Upper Dee Valley, anationally designated Area ofOutstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

We are lucky to have such stunninglandscapes – everything from highheather moorland to rich river valleys(and what a river!) – and we wantmore and more people to understandand enjoy them, and indeed help usto protect them.

We have so many iconic places –Pontcysyllte, Castell Dinas Bran, lotsof Iron Age Hillforts, the Eglwysegescarpment, Gop Hill, Moel Famauwith its much loved Jubilee Tower –that we really want to share themwith everybody.

This Society is called Friends of theClwydian Range and Dee Valley – acumbersome title, but it reflects ourconnection to the AONB. We are anindependent organisation run by ourTrustees. We are hoping to register asa Charitable IncorporatedOrganisation.

We have set our membership feeslow, at £10 per annum (£15joint/family), to attract as manypeople as possible, and for thatmembers will receive regularinvitations to themed walks to specialplaces in the AONB led by experts, talks about the AONB frominteresting speakers, a quarterlyelectronic Newsletter, a fewdiscounts from local shops, and awelcome pack including a pin badge,

car sticker and even a DVD about theClwydian Range. As well as enjoyingour activities, no doubt some of uswill even help out at eventsthroughout the AONB. But mostimportant, we hope residents andvisitors will be encouraged tocelebrate and discover this specialarea which now extends all the wayfrom Prestatyn to Corwen.

Membership forms are available atLoggerheads, the Loggerheadsgarage, the Raven, the Druid, RuthinCraft Centre, Ruthin Library andmany other places in Ruthin,Denbigh and Mold. We hope you willthink about joining us ?

In July Nature Notes I wrote aboutHouse Martins apparently inspectingnesting sites communally and, perhaps, arriving at a joint decision.Following on from this, we noticed aflurry of activity by Martins near theoccupied nest on the front of ourhouse. They were fluttering aroundthe entrance hole with muchchattering which resembledexcitement. I do not want to beanthropomorphic but it is difficult notto compare this to people gatheringround a pram to admire a baby. Thesame day the young of the nestfledged. Was this activity designed toencourage reluctant young to leave thenest? It certainly seemed that way. Itis interesting that this first brood ofHouse Martins may have already leftfor Africa, ahead of the adults. How dothey know where to go?

Thistles are not everybody's favouriteplant yet they are a very valuablesource of pollen and nectar for a widerange of bees and other insects. Afriend was surprised when I told himthere were many species as he hadgrouped them all together as 'thoseprickly things' whose seeds bloweverywhere, yet they vary enormously. There are about twenty speciesnationally and locally we have at leastsix varieties and probably more. TheCreeping thistle (Cirsium arvense) isprobably the most numerous and itslilac flowers are very attractive toSmall tortoiseshell butterflies (whereare they this year?) and its seeds are afavourite of Goldfinches. I recentlysaw a flock in excess of 50 birdsfeeding in a local field with only ascattering of thistles. The red-purpleflowers of Welted thistles (Carduusacanthoides), on the other hand, attract much fewer butterflies

although Skippers seem to like them.Spear thistle (Cirsium vulgare), whichalso has lilac flowers is onlymoderately attractive to butterfliesbut bees like them. It is easilyidentified by its long sharply pointedleaves.

Recently, in Gloucestershire, wecame across the tallest and shortest ofthe thistles. Woolly thistle (Cirsiumeriophorum) grows up to fivefeet(150cm) tall and has large headscovered in white wool, topped with areddish flower. When we were there, these flowers were buzzing withbumblebees, sometimes four or five ona single head. Others hosted Honeybees, Hoverflies, small beetles andeven some 'day-flying' moths. Theshortest is, not surprisingly, Dwarfthistle (Cirsium acaule) which has a 12inch(30 cm) rosette of prostrate leaveswith a single, stemless, red-purpleflower in the middle. The ones I sawwere mostly hosting small flies.

While at this site I was fortunate tosee the uncommon Essex skipperbutterfly which is gradually spreadingnorth and can now be found in thesouth midlands. Seeing this butterflyinvolved much crawling around onhands and knees with the nose close tothe ground, trying to get close to eachspecimen, because the Essex skipper isalmost identical to the muchcommoner Small skipper. Thedifferences are minute. The Essexskipper has black-tipped antennae andthe male has a faint scent mark that isparallel to the outer edge of the forewing, whilst on the Small skipper it isat a slight angle. However, mycrawling and persistence eventuallypaid off.
